Even though I love the PS1 library for its eclectic releases (I LOVE PS1 JRPGs) many of those titles don't hold up. I can usually look past the flaws of the era though. However, for every Metal Gear Solid, there is a truckload of shite standing in its wake.

I started watching him when I was around 12, back when he was the Angry Nintendo Nerd with the Ninja Turtles and Castlevania 2. In addition, it didn't have perspective-correct texture mapping and z-buffering, which lead to texture not being mapped correctly and bad triangles.clipping.

It's due to lack of perspective correction, subpixel precision, no proper handling of the z-buffer, yeah, the GTE wasn't all that great.

And yet the N64 had no issues with these, the PSX could've had it.

Why did they even think to have such a stupid button scheme anyway? Morrowind's Xbox port let you handle all that stuff from just the menu alone. And that was released BEFORE the PS1 version of Planet of the Apes. Or how about remappable controls? Why is it that so many games that ALREADY have good controls give you the option to change them, but the games with controls that are so bad that not even the programmers know what to do with them force you to wallow in the programmers' filth?

yes, but most devs for the ps1 were good at minimizing those problems. The competent ones anyway. texture warping was always there (we barely noticed it at the time), but I'd never seen textures jitter, and move around like that. It would appear the guys who made this game had never made a 3d game for play station before. Which honestly isn't surprising, because in 2001, 3d console games had only really taken off a few years before. For some reason after about 1998, every new game had to be 3d.

Let us not forget that this is some very cheap cgi on display here. You might see things differently if you saw some cheap models.

CGI can accomplish stuff that's impossible with miniatures though. If you see the new Planet of the Apes movie, the CGI will blow your fucking mind.

However, it's important to point out that the whole point of special effects, whether it's with miniatures, with CGI, with practical effects, or a combination of those elements, is the creation of imagery that can only be realistically accomplished artificially. Ergo, the best special effect is to be as transparent to the film as possible; aside from the fact that some things can only exist in the movies, you shouldn't notice that something is a special effect. Indeed, I would hazard a guess that the greatest complement to a special effects artist is if the audience thought the effect was real. I'm sure the special effects crew who worked on "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home" were quite proud of themselves when animal rights activists condemned the movie with claims that actual whales were harassed and harmed to make it, not realizing that no actual whales were really used in filming. It was all done with special effects, both practical and miniature, as well as the use of stock footage shot by Jacques Cousteau.
