After filming this one, it got lost in migration when making the trip with other files from camera to laptop which means a slightly different format, sorry! I'm off on holiday and didn't have time to do a full remount and - obviously not going to miss a story on the marathon - so we have our first Marathon Man Missing Episode reconstruction...
Terry Nation returns to care for his most enduring creations but have they grown bigger than their creator in the meantime? In probably the most traditional of Dalek stories for the Third Doctor is the melding of past and present a regression or wonderful evocation of the 10th anniversary year?

The reason for the 1993 repeat was to celebrate "Doctor Who's" 30th anniversary. I vaguely remember it as a kid but became really familiar with it through the Target novelisation. I'm quite fond of it, actually, despite it obviously being a "Terry Nation Greatest Hits" tour! I thin The Doctor's Fatherly relationship with the various Thals is really touching and probably epitomises the Third Doctor to me!

Loved this recon of a review - that's how you do it! Totally agree that the Daleks quickly outgrew Terry Nation, he's no David Whitaker, and that it makes it all the more frustrating when he reverts back to his original ideas time and time again, and his propensity to coast and revert to basic tropes and conventons. On the other hand, director David Maloney really does great work here, so there are things to enjoy, despite it clearly being the worst of the series.

I remember my attention flagging watching this - till that classic line about courage, Great analysis and as always highlighting those gem moments that elevate Doctor Who beyond the constraints of its production limitations and even beyond the limitations of its writers.

Totally agree that Nation just goes on an auto pilot rewrite of The Daleks. It’s not the worst Dalek story - The Chase and Destiny sink lower than this. I am not convinced you can give Nation credit for Genesis with a talented script editor and producer in place. Even Barry Letts told him to go away and write something original. Things I do like - the jungle, the fungus spewing plants, the icecano and the cavern. Classic Who does jungles pretty well and I can’t believe modern Who has never done a jungle. The bit I didn’t like was the sudden love story at the end for Latep and Jo. It had been done already in Curse but to do it one story before the actual love story departure of Jo was bad script editing by Dicks.

Being an "old" Classic Era Fan from the early days before some of the "missing" (Black&White only copies available ) Early 3rd Doctor Episodes got restored... Figured I might have gotten some B/W "Telesnaps" along with the CC Text

@@lgoamity I remember those days too! My off-air recordings of PBS Hartnell and Troughton and the Targets was all I could get. Kids are spoiled for choice today.

I have a friend who says some bloke from dagenham he works with says there's a guy in austria who has the original video. he plays it at exclusive 'marathon parties' but you won't get invited cos he's really edgy about who knows and totally denies he has a copy.

Planet has some great moments, but its the epitome of Terry Nation recycling his ideas. Like a mix of The Daleks (first serial) and the first half of Daleks Master Plan with a sprinkling of the end of the chase. Invisible monsters, lift scenes, swamp madness, etc. The performances here are great but the story is pretty average.
