Cinco Terre: A Picturesque Paradise by the Sea
The Planet Earth Motorcycle Expedition continues at a fast pace, entering the famous Cinque Terre region, a group of five picturesque villages embraced by the Mediterranean Sea on the Ligurian coast, in Italy. The winding roads, bordered by crystal clear waters, provide spectacular and breathtaking views, as if we were on a movie set.
Vernazza: Medieval Charm with a Touch of Adventure
Our destination for the night was Vernazza, the second village in Cinque Terre, known for its colorful houses rising from the steep hillsides. However, Cinque Terre is not exactly "motorcycle friendly": access to the villages is restricted to pedestrians and taxis, which means that the motorbike needs to be left in a remote parking lot.
After finding a safe place for the Black Panther, our expeditionary motorcycle, we continued on foot through the narrow and charming streets of Vernazza, climbing several flights of stairs until we reached our hotel. The climb was arduous, but the reward was a magnificent view of the Mediterranean and the village, a moment that we immortalized with a cinematic drone flight.
Sunny Day in Vernazza: Exploring Historical Treasures
With the day dawning radiantly, we set out to explore the attractions of Vernazza. We begin by visiting the Church of Santa Margherita di Antiochia, a beautiful example of 12th century Romanesque architecture, with a richly ornamented facade and a welcoming interior.
We then head to Castello Doria, an imposing medieval fortress built on top of the hill that dominates the village. The climb, as expected, consisted of a few more stairs, but the 360-degree panoramic view of Vernazza, the Mediterranean and the other Cinque Terre villages was worth all the effort.
Back on the Road: Heading to Lucca
With our hearts full of memories and our minds full of stunning images, we said goodbye to Vernazza and boarded the Black Panther, ready to continue our journey. The winding and narrow roads, bordering on the stunning view of the Mediterranean, provided more adrenaline and unforgettable landscapes.
After just 17 km, we arrive at Rio Maggiore, the third village of Cinque Terre, known for its colorful houses and charming natural harbor. Although we really enjoyed Cinque Terre, the Planet Earth Motorbike Expedition needed to move on, heading to new destinations.
Next Stop: Lucca, the City of a Hundred Churches
With the Black Panther fueled and the adventurous spirit renewed, we set off towards Lucca, the walled city in Tuscany that awaits us with its hundred churches, medieval streets and rich history. The adventures continue...
