We've talked about the position, the shape and the depth. Now we get onto my favorite part and that's planting. It's basically a case of ... You've got to think about the planting area. Any pond that's got to have plants. Otherwise, it's a pool. If you're thinking about having a pond in your garden, you're going to have plants in the pond.
You've got to think about the size of the plants that you want to keep, whether they are big plants, they need deep water. Think about the plants that you want to keep, whether they're water lilies.
If you're going to have water lilies, they need a certain amount of room depending on what type of water lily. I've kept water lilies in 4 inches of water or 12 foot of water. I've seen water lilies grow up in 12 foot of water. Not that you're going to have a garden pond, unless it's a lake.
Certainly the planting, you've got to think about the plants. There's small, miniature plants that don't need a big pond, so you can have a patio pond there, a container water garden.
Thinking about what type of plants you want to keep in your pond is a critical thing in the planning process. Whether you want something formal or structural, a specimen plant, for instance. You've got to think about the planting, the plants that you want to keep.
In the planning process, there's no point building the pond and going in there gung ho. Digging the pond and then thinking, "What plants can I put in there? Oh, I want to put in these plants," and you haven't got a keep area. You haven't got a wide enough shelf.
The first thing that I normally do with new people is say, "What plants do you want?" Or they leave it up to me. They might want architectural plants. Then you've got to think about the depth of the shelf. The first thing to do, or what I say is, "What size pot or what size root mass is the plant going to have?" Then we can build a shelf for that specific plant.
The first thing to do is I would go out and actually get some plant baskets and have a look at what size plants you want to keep. Bigger and fewer plants is a lot better impact than lots of small, little plants all mixed up. A big area of small plants is a very good thing, but it's a bold statement. What I would do is I would make sure that you build the pond so the shelves are wide enough to contain the plants themselves and they're deep enough for the plants themselves.
Let's talk about waterlilies for a minute, one of my favorite subjects. You got to think about what type of waterlily you want, whether you want a miniature waterlily, so it's growing in 4 inches of water or 6 inches of water.
Or you want a big specimen waterlily and that could be growing in any depth of pond pretty much, all the way down to 12 feet. I've seen them grow up in 12 feet of water, in optimal conditions at 12 feet because they like warm water. Certainly you've got to think about what plants you're going to keep. If you want big waterlilies, you need to have a deep pond and you need to have a big enough pond to hold those big specimen waterlilies.
That's part of the planning process. You can see I enjoy the planning process and lots of different things. Go online, see what you want. Talk to a plant professional or someone that's had a pond or had a number of ponds before and get enjoying the planning process.
