About holi, even I avoid the regular celebrations because they become too rowdy. It's always good idea to celebrate it among family and in gated societies. For foreigners, hotels organise the holi festival, and even Rajasthan Gov. organises such celebrations.
@grrrltraveler
@grrrltraveler 6 лет назад
Interesting to know the Rajasthan Gov organizes-- is it safer in Rajasthan? I celebrated Holi inside an ashram; so many Indian friends just warned me against it. 🙃 A shame because it's such a beautiful and world reknown festival.
@Adora301

Please if you are alone and also a female during holi, pls pls pls celebrate it in your hotel or hostels. Better to stay in better hotels during this time.

I have a tip, when buying anything that is packaged in India, food, water etc, check around the top or bottom and it will say the Rupee Price, Otherwise the vendor person will just charge you whatever they feel like because you will not know the price/value. This happened to me and my group a lot until we found out about the Retail Price on the package.

Awesome timing! I'm putting the finishing touches on my India trip atm, this is what I currently have planned, spending about 4 days in each place, I don't have any kind of time limitations so I may visit the odd extra place between cities if it's a long journey: Delhi > Agra > Jaipur > Jodphur > Udaipur > Mumbai > Goa > Kerala > Madurai > Kolkata > Varanasi > Delhi Any suggestions on things I should change? :)

Your visuals helped a lot, didn't have to Google map each destination to know which part they're located at. Hehe 😃 Only recently did I find out why Holi isn't ideal for female travelers. 😶 But I do look forward to Indian festivals, they seem grand!!! Thanks for the video! 😃
@grrrltraveler
@grrrltraveler 6 лет назад
glad the maps helped. As a traveler, I always need visual reference =) A lot of women don't research Holi before going and sadly, there's been a lot of bad experiences, as a result. If you don't see India women doing it, there's a reason. 😬 Otherwise, indian festivals rock!

Q&A question! Do you have any recommendations for the best places to visit to see the Himalayas in India?
@grrrltraveler
@grrrltraveler 6 лет назад
Great question Lauren!
@anantshastri8238
@anantshastri8238 6 лет назад
depending on the kind of mountains you wish to see there are various states in india which you can visit. the himalayas start off small in uttarakhand and increase in height from himachal and jammu kashmir. there are commercial places to see (nainital, dehradun, mussorie, haridwar, rishikesh etc) and then there are off beat places to see which are mostly accessible through treks which can range between a few hours to a few days (parvati valley, roopkund trek, hampta pass, valley of flowers, tungnath, dayara bugyal etc). apart from these, you can also visit the north eastern states of india for a whole other experience. assam starts of plain but gradually gain altitude the more you travel east towards arunachal and nagaland. what is it that you are looking for? :) isolation, meditation, food, tribes, photography, backpacking................
@Lauren_aida
@Lauren_aida 6 лет назад
Thank you so much for this information! All of that sounds wonderful. What I do and where I go will probably depend on a few yet-to-be determined things about my trip, but seeing the Himalayas is a childhood dream that I hope to make come true while there!
@Adora301
@Adora301 6 лет назад
Lauren Please try and break down Himalayas into atleast 3 parts. Himalayas in India starts from the the northern tip, which is a little chaotic these days, 1. Jammu and Kashmir, 2. to the north eastern states and nearly ends at 3. West Bengal, Darjeeling, famous for its tea! Please check out a little more and plan accordingly. If you are still a little lost, shoot away.... We are here to answer and suggest the best travel routes.

We are a family of 5 living in India from Australia. We’ve now lived here for 4 years. (Kolkata). It’s overwhelming and crazy but wow.....what a magnificent country to explore. Just be aware of your own limits. It’s crazy overwhelming with touts but if you have a few words of Hindi they won’t bother you so much. Northern India is incredible but the south is just majestic.our first trip to India (before moving here) was Kolkata-Varanasi-Agra- Delhi by train and then to Rajasthan and Delhi to Shimla. Our second trip we started in Chennai and travelled around the south. I travel here with my three boys with no problems. The cost.....it costs as much as you want to spend!

Just a general point to understand, don't buy anything going by the facevalue of the seller. All packed food in India has got the prices printed, you will generally find it beside the letters MRP ( maximum retail price). The number would generally be preceded by ₹ sign (rupee/INR). Even when we Indians travel to other states or parts of the country, we check it this way as India is really really vast and it feels like crossing country borders! Phew!! Hope this helps.
@grrrltraveler
@grrrltraveler 6 лет назад
Great advice. This is so subtle I forgot this happened to me several times-- true, I've noticed a disparity between the price printed and quoted by the vendor. So is it you point out the printed price to them?

$25-35 a day is not worth it for India. I spent about $10-20 a day and felt rip off comparing to the same spending budget staying in Vietnam, or Thailand or Singapore in better living conditions.
@grrrltraveler
@grrrltraveler 6 лет назад
You can't compare your dollar/value between India and SEAsia. SEA has a different economy, standard and infrastructure for tourism; it's moving closer to western tastes. Renovation isn't as common practice in India unless you spend on a nice hotel. But they are modernizing a bit more-- they have hostels now. The upgrade is not worth it, although some budget hotels will occasionally surprise you. This is why I always visit a hotel in person if I can vs book it online. Costs are also higher in the larger cities, despite quality.

If any of the viewers are planning a Diwali trip, you might want to bring earplugs. The fireworks can get pretty noisy late in the evening. Depends on your noise tolerance if it'll bother you. Also Diwali is one of the best seasons to visit India if you want to take a look at the local celebrations - cool weather plus everyone breaks out their Diwali best. Also shopping discounts. Also if you're planning to set off any fireworks, be EXTREMELY careful. Get your assigned tour guide to show you the proper technique for handling fireworks. Accidents are rare, but as with any explosive, there is a certain risk. Avoid flashbangs just to be on the safe side. Have a fun and safe trip :)

Women have to be careful and cautious..no matter which country...1.ideal timings for solo woman traveller is 7am to 7.30pm.. dawn to dusk in India..2.no night adventures 3. get 4g internet as soon as you land..such that you could Google for anything you want...4.get your antibiotics beforehand..incase you fall sick 5.if you feel people are staring at you..then just smile nd say namaste... people stare here mostly because of curiosity nd not to trouble you or any evil intentions mostly 6.women travellers carry a scarf or a shawl..u might need it in some conservative or religious places 7.to counter the spicy food here..you can have lot of yougurt..which is good for your health nd gut 8.to revitalize your energy..you can frequently have sugarcane juice..nd glucon-d( you get it in chemist/ medical shop )9.take uber or ola cab for travelling..but don't be so careless that you fall asleep in it 10.advisable not to drink or smoke publicly or any PDA 11.do not consume soft drinks or food offered by strangers..they could be vultures in disguise 12.you could ask educated indian women or girl students for any help or advice.. preferably 13.do not go to small lanes or places were no women is there..14.in metro cities there are women taxi..incase you need..15.there are Big bazaar supermarkets in most of the cities..which is a indian version of walmart 16.Basically you cannot stereotype India..you find every range nd diversity here.. poverty to super rich...Street food to five star hotels..filth to clean nd greenery nd calm places..17.india has conservative places were women are fully covered i.e sarees to modern cities like Delhi..Mumbai.. Bangalore..were you women are in jeans..skirts..modern clothing

If you are planing to visit India then please avoid persons who approaches you and try to give a tour of city. Locals are more helpful here and asking about something from local will save lot of money :) and trouble. And if you have some social media friend then ask them to so you around and you will see the real India. If you don't have a Indian friend in your friend list then please make some. It will help you a lot.

Befriend any indian around you. Indian expats are everywhere in english speaking countries. Try to pick their minds bedore planning a trip here. They'll be glad to help . Indian culture has been around before the pyramids were built in Egypt so basically it's unique and unlike anything else. So a foreigner can never understand the way we go about doing things . Make sure you know why you want to be here . India has a lot to offer . Make sure you know when and where to get it .

Yeah, you can travel India for even cheaper and even that is interesting. Like taking local soda vs/ western or water. On one occasion I've even stayed at a 150 ruppee guesthouse-- not bad. Man trouble- I've been able to handle myself in those situations, so far.
