Great video Kris👍! I’m sure you were reading the minds of many tropical gardeners (especially in the UK!) as to when and what to overwinter! I made a start last week on coleus cuttings, and dry potting Alocasia & colocasia jenningsii. Certainly looking forward to your forthcoming videos over the next few weeks, (and of course beyond😉). 😄

Hello.Im new to this. Ihave some Basjoo, Ethiopeon bananna and cannus, all in pots. Would I be ok to keep them in their pots and put them at the back of my car port (frost free, a bit dark) Ill probably build a poly covered frame for added protectionas well.

Thanks kris,my pawlonia is about 3 years old and I usually cut it down to almost ground level,but it's swamping most of the border,I think I will give it a go in a few weeks time. Is it true you can take cuttings from the roots.

I have never seen it on your you tube channel Kris. It gets a really unfair reputation for being slow and I find it looks best in shade/semi shade with shelter from wind. That is the main problem with growing it-any amount of wind wrecks the leaves.
@YorkshireKRIS
@YorkshireKRIS 3 года назад
@@pipsmith5767 that's true. Mines done much better this year being in slightly more shade. Grown better than expected.

You let the dahlias in the ground?? I didn’t know they were winterhardy
@YorkshireKRIS

Yes in well drained ground and a straw mulch they come back fine. They hate winter water logged ground.

I've a couple of small ensete's. To small to overwinter dry. What are my options for overwintering. Thanks
@YorkshireKRIS
@YorkshireKRIS 3 года назад
Only real option if too small is to treat them as houseplants over winter.

How do you deal with voles? I've found that when I apply mulch or new soil, it's very attractive for voles which come in and eat the roots of my new plants and have their tunnel entries right at the base of those plants

what plant is the most suitable for building a micro climate?
@YorkshireKRIS
@YorkshireKRIS 3 года назад
It depends on your situation but a tall evergreen works really well. I don't like Conifers but they can be good for this. Laurels can be a good option for winter shelter.

Hi Kris. Great video iv been waiting for a video like this. I'm not sure on my Colocasia. Think its best to lift mine. It will be the first winter for my melianthus. Should I cut it back ? Also do you know if I should cut back my fox glove tree (Paulownia tree)?
@YorkshireKRIS
@YorkshireKRIS 3 года назад
No need to touch the Melianthus. Only cut down any straggly growth in spring to promote fresh growth.

Borderline even in the mildest spots as they can take a while to show damage. I'd bring into the greenhouse.
