I used to be a reader and somewhere along the way, I stopped reading. I want to be a reader again and I try but I keep failing to make it a habit. The more I watch these vlogs, the more I feel motivated to read so thanks for that. Hopefully, I can call myself a reader soon.
You're so consistent when it comes to posting. Always looking forward to your videos! Thanks for making our days better, Emma :) you deserve the world! xoxo Also for December TBR, if you have never read it, I'd really recommend A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett! It's a classic novel, a touching story about discrimination and class. Edit: since I discovered that you have read A Little Princess, then I'd recommend A Little Life (Hanya Yanagihara), although it has SO MANY trigger warnings. It would be a perfect gloomy book to read in the winter, nonetheless. Girls in the Dark or Ankaku Joshi (Akiyoshi Rikako) is a perfect murder mystery to read in the winter - I really did not expect the plot twist at all. Last recommendation would be Hiroshima Joe (Martin Booth), this one is VERY disturbing, even more so than A Little Life (it has many trigger warnings as well, that I am hesitant to type here). The main character is not meant to be likable - and I find one scene at the end of the book particularly disturbing that I had to put the book down, but it was so devastating and it had the message that wars bring nothing but pain and trauma.
She recommended it in a previous video! I actually picked it up because of that, and enjoyed it. 😊 Though it was definitely a product of its time, with its racist & classist undertones.
@@chiroptophilia i never knew she recommended it! thank you for confirming. and yes of course, the racist and classist undertones of that period are inevitable.. sadly
“So this is getting a little out of control”-famous last words of all bibliophiles 😂 But we believe in you Emma! My winter tbr so far: Wuthering Heights (my favourite and one I love to read this time of year), War and Peace (Russian classics are perfect for the colder months imo), Melmoth, His Dark Materials, Royal Assassin (Hobb is so cosy to me), and The Hundred and One Dalmatians (which I read every year on Christmas Day) ❄️
I read Dune last month. I loved it and finished it in like 4 days! I know everyone’s had very different opinions but definitely recommend people try it
I'm so envious, I live in a tropical country all my life, never experienced winter at all... AHHHHHHHHH always imagined a perfect wintery night to be buried under a soft blanket on a cozy sofa in front of a fireplace with a book on my lap and some hot cocoa on one hand...
I love the winter too partly because I don’t feel guilty about never leaving the house 🤣 ❄️The snow here keeps melting - hoping this week it will start sticking around and I can get some cozy reading vibes
Emma I love your happiness at it snowing. I never see snow in Australia like you have, I think it would be so wonderful to be in Toronto on a snowy day and to see the world turn into a Christmas card.
Love your tbr, Emma! The Enchanted Sonata, Midnight in Everwood and, of course, A Christmas Carol are in my list too. I'll love to see the video about the Agatha's book! Wish i could have a winter like yours in Rio!💖❄🎄✨
I can't wait to hear your thoughts on Dune (book and movie)! Also, every time you pass the Eye of the World I hope you pick it up; it's such a fascinating series! I'm reading Brothers Karamazov this December :)
December tbr (May change because I'm a spontaneous mood reader haha): -Jane Eyre (carried over from November) -The Afterlife of Holly Chase - it's a retelling of A Christmas Carol! -A Christmas Carol -The Visit (book for school) -They Both Die at the End -A Conjuring of Light (carried over from October because I never continued it) I'd also love to get to "Gilded" by Marissa Meyer and "Call Down the Hawk" by Maggie Stiefvater if I have the time!
My Dec TBR is: -Free Lunch (for school) -Into the Wild (for school) -Piranesi -The Secret History -Cemetery Boys -The Body -Six of Crows -Mob Psycho 100 vols. 3-7 -The Girl Who Leapt Through Time -Ghosted in La vol. 3 -A Wrinkle in Time -The Boundless -A Court of Thorns and Roses -The Night Circus -Benevolent Sisters of Charity (OTGW)
I'm currently reading 'El Principe de la Niebla' and 'Le Grand Meaulnes' and about to go onto 'Pride and Prejudice. ~I speak Spanish so I'm reading the first one to keep my Spanish fresh and I'm learning French so I'm reading a simplified version of the French classic of the same name.
you're literally the one channel i look forward to every night like i just wake up to see if you have uploaded and my night will immediately be better :) my current reads are 100 Years of Solitude and I'm listening to the Born A Crime audiobook
The hits keep coming! I'm still not caught up with your backlog of videos this week, post concussion syndrome and still killing it with the work ethic! Loving it!
Pretty rainy where this cat lives - cold and rainy which is very perfect for sleeping on books - something cats have an affinity for, obviously. Enjoying "Chill Tidings - Dark tales of the Christmas season" at the moment after finishing "Spirit of the Season". Next short story collection will be "Sunless Solstice". "Christmas Carol" is a reread each Yule time - and it is always glorious. Planning is not something cats do very much - so December will tell what books to enjoy - random, yes random is a very precious word for this cat. That and warm blankets of course. Teeth and Mists
I love "the castle in the snow" by Kerstin Gier, especially because I am from switzerland and I used to work in a hotel. I try to read this book every year around christmas. Thank you for all your amazing videos!
lol I'm literally on page 136 of Dune myself! Bought it as a self birthday gift, after watching the movie I just couldn't stop myself from reading the book. Welcome to the Dune-verse Emma!
Just finished reading The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey and really liked it! It's not my usual type of book but I ended up binge reading it in 3 days and rating 4 stars ❄🌲
I've allowed myself a break from books for the next few weeks, because I've put so much of my energy into reading this year. feels refreshing! can't wait to read some of these though, thanks for the recs!
I'm trying to cram in a bunch of 2021 releases before the end of the year! I'm planning on reading Klara and the Sun, My Heart is a Chainsaw, Things have gotten worse since we last spoke, and She Drives me Crazy!! Then in January, I want to try to read more classics!
I will be having 2 hot trash and 2 classics this months if I can. The hot trash is Bird Box and Angels and demons. I will be reading Pride and Prejudice and Crime and Punishment as well. So I think some hot trash will keep my mind in control in between.
My only definite Christmas (re-)read planned is The Hogfather by Terry Pratchett. :) Fantasy-Santa goes missing, so Death has to take over his job and deliver all the presents. Other than that, my only December plans are One Hundred Years of Solitude, Mr Fox by Helen Oyeyemi, and Shadow and Claw by Gene Wolfe.
Hi Emma! Love love live your videos! Adore what you have picked for your tbr for December. Trying myself to get reading more now uni is off for Christmas. I am currently reading a Scottish Christmas story call Christmas in the Isle of skye by Kirsty Ferry Wendy Darling from A. C. Wise, Credence by penelope Douglas, and the lost apothecary by Sarah penner. I has also moved over to Liberal! Thank you for the invite living it! Have a wonder Christmas 🎄.
I'm so happy you're enjoying Dune. I read it around this time last year and it instantly became my favorite book of all time. Actually it brought back my love of reading, not exaggerating at all. It kind of breaks my heart when my favorite booktubers dislike it for the exact same reasons that i love it lol(I still respect their opinion, of course). If you really get into it, I'd love an analysis video as well, I always enjoy hearing other people's interpretations.
Also, if you are intimidated by Dune, don't be. It was the very first Sci-Fi book that I read and I didn't have any problem understanding what's going on. I listened to the audiobook Emma is talking about as I was reading along, and it was just the best experience.
You're videos are really amazing and i really look forward to watching them whenever they come out. You've honestly been really helpful in getting me properly into reading this year! If I'm in a bad mood, you're one of those channels I always go to to help cheer me up. (Also, very happy you've started Dune - one of my all time favourites. Hope you like it!)
Another video that has made my day. You never fail to make me smile or brighten my day, I love you and I cannot wait to pick up some of the books you have spoken about in this video. You are so inspirational ♥️⭐
Enjoy your videos, new subscriber. My favorite month to read is Dec. also! I always have a cup (mug) of tea when I read. I just finished a Jenny Colgan book "The Christmas Bookshop" it was hard to get into for the reason you mentioned, but I was glad I finished it. Really liked it. Thought her very first one was good. The name escapes me. Thanks!
I just this morning finished Phantom. I’m still in another world and I just love that. So I’m ready for a new magical wintry read. I’m going to see what Libby has for me today! What’s the Love tea like? I was imagining cinnamon and such.
Was planning to read along with you but finished The Christmas Carol within these three days😅 Partly because I don’t celebrate Christmas so felt no need to stretch it out and partly because of Hugh Grant’s FABULOUS rendition of the story on Audible (it’s free for members, GUYS I HIGHLY RECOMMEND)
I'm in a readalong for Bear and the Nightingale, but I'm currently reading Nightmare Alley before I see the new Guillermo del Toro movie version. Love that jacket!
I'm quite new to your channel. I'm so enjoying your vibe. So positive, realistic and I find your taste seems to work with mine. Love your videos! 🌻 I'm picking up Jane Eyre after finishing The Silent Patient. Looking forward to getting back into a classic.
So exited to see Stefan Zweig in your shelf! I love his writing (altough because I am german, i never read a translation) and especially chess is an astonishing book and a nice start into his literature!
Zweig is biggest literature discovery in my life! "Beware of pity" is one of best books I've ever read. And his novels are so good, I just love it. I'm from Russia and here I recommend him to all my friends.
Oh my goodness - I spot The Ice Palace on your shelf. I read this in summer (haha) but I felt like I was in the depths of a Norwegian winter. Breathtakingly beautiful: you’ve got to read it!!!!!!!!!!!
the snow in canada earlier this week has made me the happiest!!!!!!!!!! waking up for classes early in the morning and seeing snow fall...theres no other way to explain the joy i get from it. thank you for the wonderful video again, i hope you have a great weekend emma!
I visited L Auberge Du Lac in Lake Charles Louisiana and i heard about the 1910 fire of Lake Charles and about a family saving a Brand New Grand Piano and they manage to take out the piano in order to save it but the Piano burned but not the house.
Aah I love your pile! I think my best approximation of how to pronounce Stephan Zweig would be sth like Shtefan (vowels like you pronounced them but stress on the e) Tswaik (stress on the ai). I'm a big fan of his work and found that Grand Budapest Hotel was a fantastic little homage! :)
Hey, I hope you're doing well ... Just wanted you to know that your vlogs feels like a huge & warm hug to me =). Thank you for making these cozy videos. wish you all the best💙🦋
that was so sweat and heartwarming. i am currently reading wuthering heights with looks good for december, i will read christmas carol with you guys and i am excited for this, i wanna read Hercule Poirot's Christmas too, an also daddy long legs. this is my plan for december >
There is so much joy in choosing Christmas reads or just planning anything in general for December. Such a beautiful month even though I live in a tropical area and there is no winter here
Ignore me being super german and thinking a castle in the clouds was not known by anybody except germans, austrians and swiss...I got sooooo excited!!!😍
stefan zweig's name is pronounced as shtefan tsvaig in german. he's one of my favorite authors, chess story is probably his most famous novella but my favorite one is called confusion - really recommend that one :)
Here's an observation: In Britain lots of people read 'War and Peace' (which is not summery at all). In winter people read all about hot climates ( I suppose 'Dune' qualifies). Being smarter than me you can come up with an answer. (BTw my reading choice at the moment is David Baldacci's 'Redemption'.
Emmie asked, I shall do it. I don't really have a Christmas or wintery reading list, but my plan for December is: Finish Brother's Karamazov by Dostoyevsky (I've already read The Poor Folk, Crime and Punishment, The Idiot, The Demons and The (Young Man?, Podrostok)) Notes from the Underground (Dostoyevsky) Aelita (Alexey Tolstoy) (Bachelor's thesis) The Red Star (Bogdanov) (Bachelor's Thesis) And I'd like to squeeze in something by Yuri Falsen or Finnish a czech book "Making sense of the Czech history"
My December currently reading and TBR: "There There" by Tommy Orange "The Castle in The Attic" by Elizabeth Winthrop "Ceremony" by Leslie Marmon Silko "Snow & Rose" by Emily Winfield Martin (as per your recommendation!) "A Little Princess" by Frances Hodgson Burnett (reread. I want to read this on my Christmas vacation) "The Hundred Secret Senses" by Any Tan, if I can get through all the other books in time!
I’m so super organized with everything in my life, but not my books. I don’t make tbr’s, I’m a really big mood reader. So books that I have up next that I want to get to in no particular order are : annihilation by Jeff vandermeer, imposter syndrome by Kathy wang, the strange case of the alchemists daughter by Theodora goss, the appeal by Janice Hallett, and Flush by Virginia Woolf, because why not read a biography about a dog; and then on audio I’m currently listening to the prodigal son by Gregg hurwitz, and I also want to listen to the black flamingo by dean atta (also the narrator, I love it when authors narrate their own books), and read it at the same time. Maybe I’ll get to Yolk by Mary H K Choi as well. Lastly, my book for when I’m on the train going to my weekly hospital appointments is to kill a mockingbird, I’m about a third of the way through now. But now that you’ve outlined all of these books I want to read those instead.... which I might just do...
Hi Emma. I sent you a copy of The Gatewatch by Joshua Gillingham. I had to order from a bookstore in Canada as there were no copies available for me to send to you here in the UK and had no option to pop a message on. It’s a wonderful wintery read, I highly recommend 💜
i love winter too but my winters are n o t h i n g like your snowy winters so im super jealous! its summer where i am but we've been having a lot of thunderstorms at night for the past few weeks. so i don't really do seasonal reading. my december TBR is: tender is the flesh, the hour past midnight, letters to a young poet, a little life. and im listening to history is all you left me and disfigured (a nonfiction).
im tellin ya! next year you should 100% read the snow child! I'd say by the end of the book I felt like I was a warm cozy home that i've never been at but would love to be at in a weird way. It's about... grief? family? acceptance? i think all those work and more. Although if you don't like some things not being answered you could be disappointed about one thing. When I was in highschool I got my art teacher to read it and she said that one thing was the one thing she didn't like, I said, not everything in life is answered, and I also don't think that was the point of the book. but anyway, It starts in winter, and it goes through the seasons and through time a lot, but it takes place mostly during winter because... Well its called the snow child! When I found the book I found it randomly in a library, and it has a snowy cover too. anyway, i will not ever bring up that book again. in the commment section. it helped me through harder times. also, clearly im a pro at grammar. yeah i know its horrendous but its a youtube comment... book is great. to me. also ignore southern united states if you like snow... there is no snow in texas. apparently its winter in texas but... i disagree
