If you're planting a rose in memory of a loved one, it's tempting make your choice based on the rose's marketing name. If the deceased was named Beverly, you're in luck with a well-behaved and strong performing garden rose - but usually the choices don't match up quite so neatly. My friend gave me a rose when both her father and my father died in 2016. The rose is called Everlasting Love. A healthy tea rose with huge red double blooms and fragrant. Lives next to the creek in my garden. Such a lovely memory for our fathers.♥️💐

My goodness. After my mom died, i wanted to ask you this question but put it off because it is not something people in my country do. Just before she died i bought 3 frangranced white roses, one of it a rugosa. Mom looooved fragranced white roses but she never got to smell these 3. I think i'm going to use them as memorial roses, others are Jeri Jennings (mom asked for yellow roses last year and i bought it, and ubiquitous Edouard and Maggie, Mom planted them some 20 years ago and i repropagated them when we relocated. Just yesterday i got a very nice surprise, one of the repropagated reddish pink Maggie bloomed light pink. The scent is the same strong fruity like

Nicely done Jason. I planted the white Honor Rose as a living memorial for multiple people who have passed from my life. As a box store purchase I'm not exactly sure what the true plant is, but the name was fitting and I figured if this particular plant didn't do well I would simple find another distinguished white rose that would grow well in that space and keep the Honor rose space rather than the name of a particular plant. Roses are a beautiful way to celebrate the life of people we love, especially in the most difficult of times. My dad passed in 1988 and every time I see a rose anywhere it reminds me of the Kennedy and Perkins roses he planted around the yard. For those who have recently lost loved ones, I'm sorry for your loss.🌹

I used to plant cabbages on my Mum's grave. Sauerkraut suits her. A few years in, fertility dropped off, so I planted my dog on top. I couldn't do cabbages anymore, because my dog was a legend. Now it's just marigolds and zinnias and occasionally ginger.

Always, always seem to give us good ideas and how to suceed. Are roses somewhat drought tolerant if you can"t attend to them weekly ?
@FraserValleyRoseFarm
@FraserValleyRoseFarm 10 месяцев назад
They'll be less productive during periods of dryness, but if you can water deeply 1x per week, that would be sufficient in many climates.

Here in the UK there is a company called rosenames and they offer a 'name a rose' service. I think it's patio and floribunda roses for less than £30 you get a gift wrapped fragrant rose in the colour of your choice, named by you with a certificate for a birthday/wedding gift/special occasion etc., bit gimmicky but I'm sure they do very well, they buy them in from trials - un named and grow them on/propagate them.
@FraserValleyRoseFarm
@FraserValleyRoseFarm 10 месяцев назад
Thanks for sharing this. I don't oppose it, but like you said: a bit gimmicky, and people should go into something like that know that they're far less likely the get a garden-worthy rose than if they selected a proven good performer. The whole issue of having a certificate saying the rose has been named for someone is just a touch misleading, as I'd venture a guess they're not actually registering the rose with the proper authority for rose naming (the ARS) - so it's just a nickname of an unnamed variety, so to speak. A little bit like having a star or a square foot of land in Scotland registered to you: take it with a big honkin' grain of rock salt.

Hi Jason. A nice video with some interesting observations and just at the right time as somebody has asked me for advice on this. Must admit that I didn’t know there was a rose called Dorothy Perkins. In the uk Dorothy Perkins is/was the name of a women’s clothes retailer.

Nice video, Jason - I always give a plant of some kind if possible - it is a living memorial and will hopefully go on long after you. We gave a liquidambar for a dear friend and it stood besides the casket during the ceremony, looking golden & poignant & I believe is now stunning in his beloved garden. We made a rose arbour for our dogs - I found golden roses similar to my dog's coat and iceberg for their white bibs & tail end & my favourite Pierre d' Ronsard because our Kelpie looked great in pink! RIP dear friends...
@FraserValleyRoseFarm
@FraserValleyRoseFarm 10 месяцев назад
We're like that too - even if more informally, several trees and shrubs planted here have an association to a loved one.

@@FraserValleyRoseFarm This is where it gets hard to move/leave a property - I have trees, plants & roses given to me by special people, or planted by people who'll never return, so when I go around my garden it is as if those people are close by. I know you can take cuttings (to a degree) but the older we get (or now I'm so disabled I can't weed or plant) and you really need those reminders more than ever - but it's harder to preserve them. It's trying to hang onto a legacy as well as a remembrance. I guess trying is as much as we can do?! Keep safe up there.

I didn't know that the same rose has be sold under different names such as your example of Julia Child. Is that after the original rose patent expires and becomes public domain? Also, do you know if there's an online resource that lists roses by multiple names? Thanks!
@FraserValleyRoseFarm
@FraserValleyRoseFarm 10 месяцев назад
If there's a true name to a rose, it's the registration name - but the breeder or introducer will often spoil that name by making it a code instead, like MEIviolin for Eden/Pierre de Ronsard as an example. Then they'll offer it under marketing names in different markets. Fellowship in the UK became Livin Easy in the US. Even the famous Peace rose was also Gioia, Gloria Dei and Madame A. Meilland. The resource most people use is Helpmefind - it has a search function, and the plant profile will list alternative names.

Nice one👍. Can one just take cuttings from the grafted roses and plant those in the ground? Will the roses from cuttings outlast grafted roses? Regards

@FraserValleyRoseFarm 10 месяцев назад
Yes, if you can root cuttings, they have every chance to outlast the grafted rose on their own roots if well cared for

Hello Jason! My sweet dad passed away suddenly when he and my mom were on vacation in Mexico, just a few months before the Covid shutdown. I have thought about planting a rose or tree in my dad's memory. I'm near Heirloom Roses, so I will find one they sell. I love your rose tag you show. Do you sell those or where did you find that? @FraserValleyRoseFarm
@FraserValleyRoseFarm 10 месяцев назад
It can be challenging to keep such a vigorous rose at the size you prefer. I have Westerland as an upright shrub (with a similar firm-caned growth habit to 'Eden') and the best I can keep it is closer to 2m. Yes, regular pruning. Early spring quite low, and then a touch-up after each flush of blooms.

Hi Jason, Is it easy to tell if a rose is grafted or on its own root stock?
@FraserValleyRoseFarm
@FraserValleyRoseFarm 10 месяцев назад
I can usually tell. If the graft union is above ground you can often tell that it's quite a "knot" at the crown vs. own-root which is more the natural form of a shrub at the crown.
