In your video you state that "plant protein has not been associated with increased levels of the cancer-promoting growth hormone IGF-1," however, a recent randomized controlled study of 37 patients with type II diabetes found that not to be the case. The researchers noted, "The most striking finding is that plant protein induces similar increases of IGF-1 as animal protein does....our results suggest that differences between plant vs. animal protein intake and cancer or cardiovascular risk do not arise from their effects on components of the IGF-1-system but protective properties of other components present in plant-based diets." The study is titled, "Similar dietary regulation of IGF-1- and IGF-binding proteins by animal and plant protein in subjects with type 2 diabetes."

Wow, this is the first time in all these years watching these videos that I can say my mind is blown. I honestly did not expect this outcome. Interestingly, the researchers concluded, that they did not find a significant difference between protein isolate products and whole food sources, “suggesting that the cholesterol-lowering effects are at least, in part, attributable to the plant protein itself rather than just the associated nutrients.” So, it’s not just because plant protein travels with fiber or less saturated fat. Plant proteins break down into a different distribution of amino acids; and so, it’s like if you give people arginine, an amino acid found more in plant foods, that alone can bring down people’s cholesterol. And even plant protein concentrates used in these products aren’t pure protein, retaining a few active compounds such as phytosterols and antioxidants, which also can have beneficial effects.

As an occasional consumer soy protein isolates, I am concerned about their manufacturing process - the extraction of fat from soy beans is commonly done with a toxic solvent called hexane, which I would not be excited to consume. Personally speaking, soy really bothers me unless it is first cultured or fermented. I have no issues with things like tempeh, soy yogurt, miso, tamari, etc (well natto kind of grosses me out and so haven't tried it yet), but soy milk, straight soy beans, and concentrated soy proteins make me mucousy and gassy AF. Tofu is kind of in between these, but closer to the first group, for me. My theory as to the reason why soy raises IGF levels, in large amounts, similar to meat etc, is because some of the proteins in soy are very, very hard to fully break down and so the undigested particles cause an inflammation and mucous response (to try to help move it out of the body, like it does with a foreign invading pathogen causing infection). This is where the culturing and fermenting come into play here--the probiotic microbes essentially help to predigest those very hard to digest proteins, thus making it easier for your body to fully digest/assimilate it. This is very similar to the A1 casein protein found in regular cow milk (but not in goats, sheep, buffalo, or more ancient breed of cows). Regular cow milk, makes me really mucousy, but the yogurt form doesn't bother me at all. I have no issue with pea protein concentrate.

If you would rather eat tofu then this burger is not for you. It was made for people that want meat but don't want side effects of eating dead animals. Is it the most healthy thing you can eat? NO. No one is saying that it is but it's better than a piece of dead animal and if it helps someone on the way to tofu then what's the problem? I also would rather eat tofu! I will not be buying these but my parents love them. And (foe the beyond meat) there 17 ingredients, not 40. of those 17 only 3 may need to be looked up. Methylcellulose- made from fiber, potassium Chloride- a salt, and Sunflower Lecithin- the gummy part of the plant.

If you read the ingredient list there aren't so many "strange" things and most of the common additives in food are usually stuff like ascorbic acid (vitamin-C which is added as anti-oxydant) . Here in the EU we also have these pesky "E-numbers" that are often confused with "strange chemicals" . We even say that something that is very processed has "a lot of E-numbers in it". E numbers are actually nothing more than a convenient way of shortening the ingredients list, for instance E-300 is good old vitamin C. BUT if you search each of these ingredients up on the internet you will find that they are mostly very common things that you may have in your kitchen pantry or just vitamins. I would be more concerned about the amount of fat and sugars than about "checmicals", but more from the point of view that these industrial foods use to be relatively more caloric. What I do, specially because I want to know if something is or not vegan, is just remembering to take my phone with me to the supermarket and search stuff up if I don't know what it is. Of course, nothing beats a home made lentils stew And for protein: Home made seitan, search for "wheat gluten" on the internet, it's dirt cheap!

From my own perspective and my husbands, we have been vegan for over 60 years between us. No major health issues UNTIL pea protein was added to vegan food. We BOTH get stomach pains and loose bowels from it. Isolating components from natural food is dangerous and unnecessary- we both do not need convincing that pea protein is unnatural- our body reactions say it all!

Long time fan with some constructive feedback for video production - I'm not sure the fullscreen Dr. Gregor presentation is working as well as the old infographic, text page focus of years past. Great looking guy with a face for television, but having him gesture next to the graphics is distracting and overall everything comes off less scholarly than it deserves to...like there's an appeal to something other than the viewer's intellect. That said, I'm sure the change of format was an informed decision at the time and I may be in the minority with my preference.

Would love some clarity as I've avoided soy protein isolate for this reason.

Yes, true. Dr Mcdougall also mentions it in his book "The starch solution". Isolated soy protein is connected to more cancers and accelerated aging. He argues specifically AGAINST low-sodium diets. He doesn't believe in the prevailing dietary salt reductions of the last 70 years and argues against them in the hope that the "truth about salt become known". He exhorts one to trust one's natural cravings and desire for salt with the assurance that the body can regulate itself. What about the health effects of using a more processed soy protein like TVP in comparison to having tempeh or tofu?
@justinw1765
@justinw1765 2 года назад
Particularly tempeh I would say is far more healthy. Soy protein is really hard to digest, at least for me, and has an allergenic effect in my body unless it is first cultured or fermented. Tempeh is also pretty high in protein, while having a lot of other nutrients, and the microbes partially predigest it, making it easier for a body to fully digest it (which is why it doesn't spark that allergenic type response in self and many others). When it comes to concentrated plant proteins, I stick with pea, because it doesn't have that allergenic type effect on me.

Would it be possible that animal protein sources cause a higher instance of various cancers because they promote more hypertrophy, and muscle-tissue growth (especially in elders) can be associated with a risk of cancer growth? I'm madly speculating here, but I was wondering about that. Also: what are the effects of plant and animal protein in regards to hypertrophy? If you want to build more muscle, is plant-protein going to hold you back significantly? Or is the difference not significant?
