Garden author Susan Mulvihill shares her best tips for planting and growing broccoli, including how to keep aphids and cabbage worms away. She also plants carrots and shares a tip on how to get the best possible germination since carrot seeds are notoriously slow to sprout! From Susan's in the Garden, SusansintheGarden.com.
Susan gardens in Spokane, Wash. While most of the area is in hardiness zone 6, her garden is in a microclimate, making it zone 5b.

Hi Susan I enjoy watching your videos, very clear and thorough 👍 I'm setting up a bed same size as yours for winter sprouting broccoli, how long do you cut your black hoops?
@SusansInTheGarden
@SusansInTheGarden 2 года назад
Hi, Ali. I apologize for the delay. I kept meaning to go outside with a tape measure to see how long they are! Anyway, they average 6' long. However, the best way to determine the height you want is to take your hoop-making material (i.e., black plastic sprinkler pipe or PVC pipe) and hold one end of it up to your bed, form a hoop shape, and see how tall you'd like it to be, before you cut it. That way, you can come up with the best size for your purposes. I hope that makes sense!

Do you water the soil the boards are on for carrots during that initial 10-day period?

Hi, Lisa. Only with a hose if the soil appears to be dry but the drip irrigation set-up is on the bed and runs every few days.

Hi, Alison. That is a coyote decoy that we bought a few years ago in an attempt to keep the quail out of our veggie garden (they cause a lot of damage). Unfortunately, it only worked for about 2 weeks! I wrote a humorous garden column about it, if you'd like to read it: www.susansinthegarden.com/2021/07/july-18-column-coyote-decoy/.

Hi Susan. Thanks for this timely video. I have seedlings that are getting leggy indoors. The weather here has been horrible. I am wondering if I can bury my Broccoli seedlings a little deeper to help with the legginess. Whacha think?
@SusansInTheGarden

Hi, Mark. I haven't tried that with broccoli seedlings but I think it should be OK as long as you don't bury them too deeply.

Hi Susan. Great video! Do you have a suggestion to prevent slugs from collecting under the boards for the carrots? I guess I could just flip the boards over everyday and remove.

Susan, how do you control slugs on broccoli & cabbage?I have a lot of issues battling them.
@SusansInTheGarden
@SusansInTheGarden 2 года назад
Hi, Joyce. I use rings covered with copper tape at the base of each plant. The skin and antennae of slugs reacts electrically to copper so they don't want to be near it. I also sprinkle diatomaceous earth on the ground underneath plants I need to protect because it will cut into their skin, causing them to dehydrate and die. The copper ring set-up is one of the DIY projects in my book, The Vegetable Garden Pest Handbook. If you'd like to get a signed copy from me, just let me know (Susan@SusansintheGarden.com). The book is filled with information on both damaging and beneficial insects and all solutions for dealing with them are organic.

I really like the set up you created for the hoop beds and the hinged row cover. The middle row of your carrot bed has no board on it. Did you intentionally not plant that row or did you plant but no board as an experiment to see what will germinate faster?🥕🥕🥕

Thanks Susan! Actually I was able to get carrots and one broccoli plant to grow once. For the broccoli it seemed like such a big plant for a little yield. The carrots I started one year indoors to transplant. Not a good idea. Direct sown is what carrots need. Is there an organic compost that is worth buying? What about worm castings? I know my soil could be better.
@SusansInTheGarden
@SusansInTheGarden 2 года назад
Hi there. I'm not familiar with a lot of the organic compost products but Espoma offers one and their company has a very good reputation. Worm casting are great because they add a lot of nutrients that plants need. Well worth adding to your garden!

I just planted out my broccoli seedlings and they're not standing on their own. I was worried they were too leggy but they look similar to yours (which makes me feel better 🤣). Does this mean they won't do well? I staked them and am hoping for the best! Thanks for another timely video!!
@SusansInTheGarden
@SusansInTheGarden 2 года назад
Hi, Nicole. Sometimes that happens and the staking will help them out at the beginning. One way to prevent this in the future is to have a gentle fan blowing on the young seedlings so they develop a strong root system and stems.

Where to buy agriculture insects netting to keep leaf miners, spider mites, flea beetles?
@SusansInTheGarden
@SusansInTheGarden 2 года назад
Hi, Susan. We bought our garden insect netting from agfabric.com. As I have mentioned in some of my videos this year, we haven't used it before so I don't know if it will keep spider mites and flea beetles out but the mesh is very tiny so I'm hopeful it does a good job! I don't actually have either of those insects in my garden, but I do have aphids and they are equally tiny. If you use some netting this season, I would love to hear from you later this year to hear how it worked for you. My email address is Susan@SusansintheGarden.com.

Don’t you disturb the soil structure when you dig holes to transplant?
@SusansInTheGarden
@SusansInTheGarden 2 года назад
Well, how else can you transplant your seedlings? But digging small holes minimally disturbs the soil structure compared to rototilling or turning over all of the soil within a bed (or garden), so it has much less impact.
