I’m battling these little shts also. I’ve got captain jacks concentrate on the way, I Amazon primed that sht immediately. Super bummed. They got to my Philodendron Gloriousum, silver sword, Painted Lady among others...so many of my faves. This video is so helpful. Just know you’re not the only one! We’ve got this!
I did the same thing after watching Pam's video. I just found the ready to use one at Lowe's as well!! I'm sorry you've been going through it, but we do got this! They seem to really like Philodendron and similar leafy plants 😑 so far somgood though with the Captain Jacks!!
Oh my goodness thank you for showing the difference between a fungus gnat and a thrip! I’ve watched videos that teach how to fight them yet I’m wasn’t even sure what a thrip even looks like!
I'm glad it was helpful! They also fly around more erratic and fast compared to a fungus gnat, not sure if I mentioned that but they seriously make fungus gnats look like slow flying idiots 🤣
I use the Captain Jack spray or the powder as a PRECAUTION……I treat my plants all the time with this amd haven’t had any pest issues. It doesn’t harm the plants either. I should take out stock in Captain Jacks 🤣 Good luck! but, always have a bottle in your house……Lowe’s has it. It’s the best
Thank you! Found some at Lowe's yesterday because of you! I had no idea they carried the ready to use. Perfect because I needed some for my bfs plants!! 😊
Well…. Your visual comparison to fungus gnats has helped me diagnose my own infestation 😭😭😭 I am about to run to the store and get another bottle of deadbug brew or whatever it is because I’m going to run out from spraying everything down
The struggle is real. I'm happy to help, but sorry I've had to for this one. Just keep at them every few weeks with the dead bug. I still have some in here that are getting ready for another round of murdering my plants, but I'm on top of it this time. Those suckers are a real pain in the assshh
Thank you for this vlog. I've never dealt with thrips and hope I never do. I also use the sticky traps and they help and I just bought captain Jack's last week so headed the right way. Very informative and so helpful. Have a great weekend! 🌱
It's definitely good to know what to look for. I had remembered what thrips looked like and their erratic flight pattern from seeing other people deal with them. So as soon as I noticed them it was pretty obvious what was going on. The Captain Jacks is definitely my new go to for killing everything! I think it even killed my mealy bugs 🤞🏻🤞🏻 I haven't seen any in weeks!!
I just bought some Captain Jack’s for a callisia repens that I bought that has spider mites, ugh. I hope you got your thrips taken out swiftly! On a positive note, your begonias are so cute! I might have to pick one up in the future :)
Great job!!!! I also use the peppermint castile, a few drops of tea tree mixes (I may have thrown something else in there 🤣) and have it in the same sprayer you have and that’s my leave shine cleaner I use quite often and then sporadically will use the Dead bug. But I really like the leaf shine combo too. I don’t use Neem at all. I don’t like it! But you sound so happy! I have used the dead bug on my orchard also amd you wouldn’t even know it! Love ya Jacqueline! Your a sweetheart ❤️
Thank you Mary 😊 I'm definitely going to be using peppermint or tea tree from now on! I use tea tree for everything else so it makes sense here too lol. I'm starting to dislike the neem oil, it cleanes them nicely but that's about it 🤷🏻♀️
Thanks for showing how thrips look like! I went and sprayed some of my Pothos and Philodendrons with my neem oil solution. I’m hoping the yellowing on them it’s from something else, but who knows. I’ve only used the neem oil once about 2mo ago and burned my Monstera, I didn’t notice the sun was hitting it after I had used the solution! I’m going to order that dead bug as I read it works differently than the neem oil.🐞💚
The burning could be coming from the soap you're using too, be careful to only use pure Castille Soap. I made that mistake with a few. And to avoid the sun burning them or them getting tacky I just leave the neem oil on for about a day and then wash it off. It's not great to leave on because it clogs up the plants pores. Don't stress the yellowing, that could be anything, usually inconsistent watering or the plants natural process of sacrificing old leaves to make new ones 😊
I watched the same video you mentioned from the Liquidirt guy a few weeks ago and actually just treated my plants with his formula a few hours before watching your video! So far the only plant that had a bad reaction is my monstera Peru - the leaves now have black dots on them. Otherwise, my other plants seem ok so far, but it’s only been a few hours. I bought the Captain Jacks Dead Bug also but haven’t tried it yet, so I’m happy to hear you’re having success so far.
That's funny! It was super helpful to watch, and thank you for letting me know your experience with it!! I haven't tried it yet but so far the captain jacks is working. Have to reapply like once a week but that's fine, I do it in stages while I'm watering them anyway 🤷🏻♀️. Hoping these lavewing eggs hatch soon, they look like they might be doing something now lol
🐞 🐞 🐞 I can't wait to find out if this worked!!! I have been using captain Jack's as well on my thrips. I have yet to find adults, I have only found tiny white, clear looking babies! No idea where they came from cuz they r on many of my plants, but I have never seen an adult! So I'm confused where these are coming from!! I am stressed!!! I hate thrips! I have beat spider mites, and aphids, and mealy bugs! But thrips have killed me!!!! I am struggling! So I'm gunna keep up on captain Jack's and pray it works! Thanks for all the info!
I think I'm in the same boat right now. Haven't seen any adults in a while and these lacewings are supposed to eat the larva and stuff 🤷🏻♀️ so we'll see
I am ordering the Captain Jacks but I’m also going to my parents house tomorrow for a systemic treatment. I have only seen a few questionable larvae on the leaves of one plant and I have sprayed and wiped them twice a day for the last few days since I found them. Hopefully I am on top of it before it starts. I hope your plants are super happy, healthy and clean! 🐞🐞🐞🐞
Thrips have a 2 weeks life cycle. So cleaning and treating on that schedule is sufficient enough. They're not as scary as people make them seem. If you stay on top of it they're not an issue. I use beneficial mites now and I don't have to do any of the work. Captain Jacks isn't really effective anymore, they've started to become resilient to it. So it's good to switch it up. But if you plan to use systemic you don't need anything else. Just please educate yourself first on how to use it and why it's really dangerous. Use gloves and cover your face when using it, these products have been linked to cancer. Treat your soil, plant, and water runoff like the bio hazard that it is and dispose of it properly. Don't put treated plants outdoors either or you'll kill a lot more than thrips.
@@jaclynns.jungle Yes. I read up on it. But thank you for the warning! It does look pretty caustic As they are in pots I didn’t need to apply too much and I watered thoroughly after. It’s good for 6 weeks it says. They are strictly indoor plants as I do not want to deal with outside bugs getting into the soil. 😖 I want the Jacks in case my more delicate ones show signs of problems later on. I am recovering from fusion of 2 vertebrae in my neck and am still restricted on what I can lift and do, so systemic is much easier for me at the moment; especially with my bird of paradise plants.
I heard that too! Might order those now lmao, I forgot. Was hoping the eggs would hatch faster and I wouldn't need them, but I'm still seeing a few adults here and there. Would be a good idea to have to track them moving forward.
Omg I just spotted my first Thrips outbreak and i’m freaked out. I had to throw 3 plants out 😢 But in the process of treating my plants i’ve discovered WORMS in one of my prayer plants! Yes you heard it right….. worms! I know it sounds crazy but I don’t want to throw it away, it’s a beauty plant! So I used hydrogen peroxide amd water and watered it and they all stopped coming out of the pot so I’m pretty sure they’re all dead, now I have to find it in me to repot it! Uuuugggg I’m so grossed out! Worse than the thrips!
@@jaclynns.jungle No they were actual worms crawling all around 🤢 in and out of the pot. long and skinny. Silly question…… larvae wouldn’t move right????
There's not much to see since they just fly around. But I did show you what they look like on sticky traps, and what the damage on the plants will look like if you watched the whole thing.
Shut up whyyyyyyy didn’t I know thrips had wings 🤦🏼♀️ I’ve been a serious succulent collector for 3 years and I’ve never had thrips before I had no clue they had wings! This video was so helpful thank you!
Very educational if i ever have that i will know betyer and i now know what they look like. Sprinkle cinnamon on your soil work i about a inch or 2 it will kill the larve to fungus knats and you will slowly see them dying down. Then sprinkle monthly to refresh it. I get mine for plants at Dollar tree for a dollar i have over 200 plants in less pots cause my succs and cacti are in mini garden containers for space and cause they look better and i have less rot that way. Prayers what ever your cronic problem is back under control i know it sucks my girl friend has developed crons she gets better and then starts to work and go bad again to bad. She lives about a half hour away and we just can't find a day she is good enough to come over for lunch somewhere or a soda
Cinnamon is definitely something I've been trying as well to manage fingus. And I'm sorry about your friend with chrons disease, that's a tough one to manage without a strict diet and lifestyle, but it's definitely manageable. Wish your friend the best!
Love your plant collection! I've never gotten predatory insects before but since you have already treated your plants with insecticides, won't that also kill any predatory insects?
Great question! Since the captain jacks only works if the bug ingests the plant, it's completely safe for the predatory bugs! They don't nibble on the leaves so once it's dry it's completely harmless to anything that lands on it but doesn't eat it. That's why it doesn't work against fungus gnats. I hope that makes sense!! Great question! Might pin this to the top 😊
@@jaclynns.junglethat makes sense and I had a feeling. What about if the predatory insects eats an insect that has eaten a treated plant. Will that kill the predatory insect?
@@glennacrabtree7788 also a solid question. It shouldn't because the bug that eats it will die fairly quickly and I want to believe the predatory bugs instinct would be not to eat a sick or dying bug. 🤔 it's such a small amount and the bugs already digested it so I feel like it shouldn't be a worry. I was more worried about them landing on my sticky traps 🤣
@@kearao6726 they haven't hatched yet so it's safe for them in here by now 😊 most of the adult thrips seem to have already been eradicated so now we just wait and see if more eggs have been laid. Thank you for the advice! I appreciate you adding to the conversation!
A video of making that concoction from the liquidirt guy would be cool. I don’t do any preventative, but if I ever have issues (usually spider mites), I use a spray called “Eight”. It has sulfur in it and smells horrible, and for a good amount of time 😒. I hope you completely annihilated those thrips 😁
Ugh sulphur smells awful!! Worse than neem oil in my opinion! I linked the video to how to make the other stuff in the description box for tou to check out!! That one is supposed to smell nice lmao
I'm in the middle of washing my 40+ plants in my living room since I discovered thrips last night. Ive got some Capt Jack's Dead Bug from my last thrips trip. It was a new plant in quarantine thank goodness. Im using neem oil this time so I guess I'll have to do several treatments. I'm not sure my calatheas can handle Dead Bug. Can you olease give me your recipe with the castille soap you use to clean your plants. I've always just used water and a rag. Thanks!
The calathea can handle the captain jacks just fine! Just remember to re-apply every 2 weeks. I also started using beneficial mites to help prevent and keep infestations small. For my spray I mix a tablespoon or so of castille soap with warm water and a bit of isopropyl alcohol. If I'm feeling fancy I'll add in a few drops of neem oil. Don't have a specific formula, I'm Italian so we just eye ball everything 🤣
How did it go down? I just found my first thrip, yeeted that plant into the trash (it was in a dome so I guess it wasnt too dangerous but I uncovered it one night by accident). and sprayed everything with the brew on the leaves, but didnt drench
The captain jacks works amazing! You have to do it every 2 weeks for a little bit to kill them all but I now just use it all the time as a preventive! Throwing it out was a good plan if all the leaves are damaged bc they lay eggs IN the leaf tissue that can hatch later on. That's why every 2 weeks is important to break the life cycle! Haven't had another outbreak since this video!! I wish you luck!!
Girl, I stand in solidarity 💪 Shit is DRAINING 😩😩😩 We WILL overcome ❤️ What is the Begonia in the left of the tub when you firat showed the plants in the bathroom? Looks like maybe a Whimsey? Or Wightii?
I honestly forget the name of that Begonia lol, strawberry something? It wasn't labeled when I bought it and I've yet to see another one. I just knew I needed it when I saw it so I bought that shit 🤣🤣
When you sprayed with Captain Jack's Dead Bug you did that in your bathroom? The directions make it sound like you need to wear a haz mat suit. I'm doing my 3rd spray tonight on my 45 plants. I've already put the Bonide systemic insecticide granulars in the top soil. Removing damaged leaves is heart breaking. I've had plants die but not like this.
The systemic is actually the one where you need to cover your face and hands. Deadbug Brew is non-toxic. Systemic can cause cancer, so be careful with using it and don't put those plants outside!!!
Thank you, thank you, thank you.... I noticed my win imbe lookrd crazy, so I treated it.. while watching your video. It dawned on me.. syngonium looked like the leaves were burnt. That i moved out of the sun a week ago. Dag gone.. infestation.. I ran down stairs ans treated it. Pulled off all the bad parts.. Thank you... I will be treating the rest later today
It happens to the best of us. I'm happy to help point out the signs of it, it went unnoticed for me as well. I hope the treatment works!! I saw a huge decrease after the first round of it, for sure!
I spray them at least every other week at this point as I take them down and water them. The first spray took out majority of them, but I still spot a few here and there. Overall I'm pleased with how well the Captain Jacks works! I have an update in my most recent vlog as well ☺🌿
@@meowk5812 definitely can't hurt! I tested it on all my plants and they're all doing great! If anything they look much happier after it's been applied 😊
@@jaclynns.jungle it is a horror 😭 all my plants are affected and I just don’t want to deal with it. It’s been weeks. I have everything ready though, including captain jacks and the spray bottle you recommended! I’m sensitive to chemicals and pretty skeptical of insecticides so coming across your video was very helpful. I hope you’re doing well! pest free and all 💕
@@rachelb.2812 I totally get that! The captain jacks is amazing! Definitely gotta do it a few times to stop to cycle of them laying more eggs 🤢 but it works!! Don't let it get you down!! You got this!! 😉
It's such a hassle but once you get on top of it it's easier to manage. I hope you were able to learn something from my experience so far!! Good luck! You got this! Kill those nasty suckers!
Not wanting to be an ass or anything but most houseplants are severely toxic to cats and can kill them if they end up consuming enough, they cause mouth iritation, diarrhea, confusion and respiratory complications, a friend of mines cat literally chewed on a monstera leaf, didn't even eat much and started having seizures and unfortunately passed away before we got her to the vet Please please please keep your plants away from your pets, they don't know any different, possibly get them some that they can ear like wheat grass or cat mint so they don't feel the need to chew the toxic ones 💜
@@jaclynns.jungle I guessed you'd know it was just when I saw where your kitty had been chewing on the pothos 😅 made me relive the whole experience with my friends cat xx
