It’s a little hard to tell without close ups but rust can be determined by rubbing the “rusty” spots on your leaf. If the orange rust comes off on your hand, it’s likely that it is rust. This orange dust are actually the spores of the rust called “uredinia” which can then infect other plants. PS. rusts tend to be highly host specific so a rust on a philodendron plant likely wont infect a calathea, monstera etc. Source: currently doing research in a rust laboratory for cereal crops 🌾

I could listen to you talking about science forever. And as soon as I noticed the diagrams in the video preview, I jumped with anticipation - they meant you will be explaining something.🤓I just realized that this is why the soap is important ingredient in the neem oil solution - to increase the stickiness of the mixture!

It certainly can feel overwhelming and a bit defeating when you have so many plants and the bugs arrive. I'm going through the same thing here in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. We love our plants and we shall prevail! Thanks for such an interesting video and for including that little fluffball dog of yours.

One tip for identifying rust on plant leaves is seeing if there’s visible spores on the underside of the spots. Though i mostly have experience with rust on roses, it can spread to other plants as far as i’m aware. Chopping off the leaves is the best thing to do to avoid the rust from spreading into the stem, cause if that happens the plant is pretty much gone.

I found one of my alocasias full of spider mites the other night, i didn't have any of my normal bug stuff so i panicked and hosed it off then wiped out with furniture polish 😂 the next day i got some insecticidal soap and sprayed the plants that are around it... It's been about 4 days now and there is no sign of damage from the furniture polish spray and no signs of spider mites in that one either... I'll definitely be giving it another shower though before i do anything else with it 🤷🏼‍♀️😂

Love your science bit. Thanks for the detailed info how soap kills insects... gonna go make some to kill springtails I have in my soil pots. Also you think dishsoap is ok instead of castile?
@reallybigplant
@reallybigplant 11 месяцев назад
i’m so glad you thought the soap stuff was interesting! 😊💜 Yes dishsoap should be ok too. sometimes dish soaps have a lot of other cleaning agents and fragrance that can build up or be problematic over time but a couple of applications should be ok. in my experience for springtails I have found that repotting and then applying diatomaceous earth on the soil is most effective but its pretty hard to kill the springtail populations…best of luck! thanks for watching Claudia, hope you have a great week! ☺️💞🌿✨

I have some Hoya that did not like a permethrin treatment. I am quite sure it can cause harm to other plants. It causes a short phototoxicity. Cat-owners should not use eight! It lost its permission as a plant protection product in the EU. There is acequinocyl as a miticide against spider mites and flat mites. But if there is a constant pressure of spider mites in your region, maybe beneficial insects could do the job even better?

Hiiii!!! This was so interesting! I have a question about two of my plants based on what you said. My Hoya Obavata is one that I only water about every two to three weeks. Lately, I’ve noticed that the water just goes right through the pot to the bottom and comes out immediately. Should I try adding some soap, or should I go ahead and repot it, which is what I thought I should try and see if that helps? The other is my Alocasia Black Velvet. One leaf has a round yellow spot that was just there one day out of nowhere. I don’t see any pests on the plant, so I’ve just been ignoring it, lol. Should I cut off that leaf???? Thanks so much in advance!! 💜💚🪴🌵
