Ever wonder how botanists preserve plants so they can be used by researchers hundreds of years in the future? UC Berkeley PhD students Joyce Chery and Carrie Tribble are here to show you! In our next episode, we'll talk about the exciting research projects going on in UC Berkeley's herbarium, a collection of 2.2 million of these preserved plants!
To find out more about Carrie and Joyce's research, check out the Specht Lab website: spechtlab.berkeley.edu/

Nice video! What a great team of plant scientists. :) It would be great if you'd caption it (or fix/edit the automated captions), as I'd love to use it in my plant class at our community college, but we're only permitted to use accessible (correctly captioned) videos.

Done! Sorry that took so long, I've been slowly catching up on things after I finished my qualifying exams :) I'll definitely get them up sooner for future videos!

I worked at Utah State Arboretum under dear Art Holmgren too many years ago to count. Changed my life.

Is there a specific kind of plant that can be used for this? Or any kind of plant?

Any kind of plant! Sometimes if the plant is a succulent or has big fleshy fruits it will take longer for them to dry out, but it's definitely doable! Large herbaria like the one at UC Berkeley contain millions plant specimens preserved this way. If you'd like to see more examples of herbarium specimens, check out the sequel to this episode- we go into a lot more detail and talk about the awesome research projects that are conducted using these collections: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-eKEZfzlYWEo.html
