Thank you, but I really insecure about watering during dormancy... Do I water thoroughly whenever the soil ist dry e. G. Philodendron or will I get root rot if doing so? 🤷🏻♀️
By far this was the best video I’ve seen on plant wintering & dormancy. Towards the end of the video I was wondering about my Zz plants and how irregular they seem to grow and then if course moments later you specifically go over this. I appreciate this channel so much, and wish I had found you guys two years ago when I began my house plant collection. Anytime someone ask me for care tips or information about their plants I recommend you guys. Thank you
Hello Swedish plant friends! My question is when staking a vining plant to encourage it to grow upwards and get bigger leaves, does it matter if you twine it around the totem or pin it vertically? I really enjoy your channel 🌿
@@Kim-vt6pt Well, you would think it shouldn’t. But, so far, most of the plant “professionals” are suggesting that you pin it straight up instead of wrapping it around ..... No one seems to know why though. It looks better if you twine, and wrap, and spiral the vine around the pole, because you get a fuller look . But everyone is suggesting that you literally pin the vine straight up the pole vertically without wrapping it around the pole. Everybody is wondering why, but no one seems to know. Here’s to hoping the Swedish plant guys have an answer!!
@@avamarshall1209 hm, thats interesting to know! Thanks for telling me (: perhaps you could pin up & twist. Pin up certain vines for bigger leafs & twist some vines for a fuller look. Though i think twisting it up, it should probably still get bigger leafs overtime?
.. To get bigger leafs on the plant, bright indirect light, and then you need to turn it around occasionally so the whole plant will have the same light.. To make the plant more bushier, you need to take cuttings from it.. When cuttings have rooted, you can plant them with the mother plant.. .. When the plant are in their natural environment they go straight up on the big tree trunks.. Climbing and holding on to the tree.. The pins on the moss pole is just to help the plant to hold on..
Excellent video. I want to elaborate on growing lights. In a dark space I use growing lights for my plants and it is on for 12 hrs a day. During winter here in Iceland this corner becomes even darker, so I cannot turn off the lights. In this situation how do I replicate winter lighting using growing lights so my plants can go into dormancy?

My indoor plants continue to grow even during winter, but the growth is definitely a lot slower. It’s amazing watching the change in early spring and seeing the growth explode. It’s such a satisfying part of plant ownership. They’re such fascinating organisms!
I did not realize that tropical plants had dormancy. Most of my tropiccals continue to put on some growth, but very slowly, compared to summer. My fiddle leaf fig, definitely displayed a textbook dormancy. It did nothing all winter, then come March, it produced 3 gigantic, beautiful leaves in just a few weeks. I think it is also why most winter propagation efforts fail, or take painfully long.
Hello; My question is; I got Ficus L Bambino and Monstera deliciosa last fall 2020. both are now no more then 30 cm. I don't fertilise or use growing lamp. how is possible cause both is having new leafs. the only think that I did since I have them is placing them close to a south big window. It's winter now in Canada. Do they not supposed to be dormant? Please advise and thank you very much for your lessons.
I understood all that you said in this video--however, since I get little sunlight in my home I use a grow light that is on a timer. And since I provide more light artificially, how does that impact the dormancy of my plants?
A very informative video, thank you! One thing I'm wondering about though are tropical plants, the ones that we usually have as houseplants such as the lovely pothos you're presenting. In the tropics, there aren't really seasons in the same way as for example Sweden. Why would those kinds of plants need a resting period? I'm guessing you would see changes in dormancy when looking at plants that come from different elevations in the tropics, which will experience different temperatures. But what about the ones that don't?

Thank you very much, now I know what my ZZ plant is doing. I thought, something is wrong, because she's now more then a half year doing nothing upside. So then, I will let her her rest. We all need sometimes a rest, don't we!!! And now I understand why I don't have alot problems with my plants, because if they do nothing, I "forget" them till they show me hey, I grow again, I love you. Applause for this great video 🤗👍

.. A ton of people use humidifier but only few of them speak honestly about the mold problems it will eventually cost.. I don't have a humidifier and I'm not going to either.. Instead I mist my plants, all 120 of them, every other day or so.. Some of them are sitting on a tray with perlite or smal stones on it, and I just add water and the plants are sitting on top of the stones (still being in their cover pot) having humidity from the tray.. From early summer I slowly increase my misting to every day as the weather gets warmer.. Every once a month I clean their foliage, one leaf at the time, with clean water/seaweed.. So they can breathe..
Dear Swedish Plantguys, if we plant in pumice and use self watering system, could you give some advises on care during dormancy time? should we still continue fertilizing the plants (I use liquid fertilizer)? if yes, how often? And what about watering? Thanks!

Would you recommend having a humidifier, I have many calathea and obviously they are suffering a lot due to dryness tho I am misting it regularly, on the other hand I won't try to affect its dormancy. It's February. My Calatheas are next to my Marantas. They're all at 23-24°C, 50-60% humidity with 12 hours of grow lights. Calatheas are dormant while Marantas are active (one of them is pushing 3 leaves at once).

I found it very educational. 👍 Lately, I noticed that every time my Dieffenbachia Dumb Cane Plant had a new lower new leaf, it would turn yellow or sometimes yellowing as it was unfurling. I read about plants low in sulfur could cause this so I added epsom salt by misting it on the leaves after mixing it - 1 teaspoon per liter of water. I hope this will work. Have you made a video about nutrient deficiencies? I would find this very helpful. Thank you again for your outstanding videos.

Thank you for sharing all these knowledge. Iam learning so much about how to take care of Indoor plants. Outdoor plants for me are easier to take care of. I just let take nature take it's own course. Getting -35's here in Canada, can I put my indoor plants in a bucket of pebbles with H20 to keep their humidity. It get so dry inside the house having the heater/radiator/fireplace on for 24/7 a week. Will that be good or bad for my indoor plants. I need your advice. I envy you! I live in Wyoming, and my relative humidity in winter is 17% in my house. I'm using a teapot to raise it, along with a pan on the furnace, and regular misting. I can't get the humidity above 25% on a continuous basis. I'm not sure I can get a humidifier due to the fact that I live in an older (100 years old) house, and the electric circuits probably can't handle it. :(

Many of our indoor plants come from the mediterranean region or the subtropics. So the natural dormancy in e.g. sweden is different. So isn't it better to use artificial light and a humidifier when someone lives in colder regions?

No fertilizer during dormancy? Dormancy for some succulents is in different times of year than other annuals or prennial plants and all these are different from zz and pothos
Can a plant go dormant in the middle of producing a new leaf? I have a maranta that has an unfurled leaf for months now! It just appears distressed and paralyzed. It doesn’t even appear to move anymore.

But during the winter I would also need to have my window shut during the majority of the day so that the plants won’t freeze. Is there any good ways to give the plants enough air flow? Thanks!

after planting zz plant from cutting, it doesnt grow at all. few months now. Looks well, it even grew some water roots down to water reservoir which I let to dry out completely between watering again. Is it dormant in your opinion?
It is probably using most of its energy producing and establishing a viable root system first, which it needs before producing new growth. Sounds like it's doing a good job at it, so I'm sure it will be just fine :)
.. Just ordinary led light can do the trick.. If we don't get enough light either, we too go "dormant", depressed and more.. Let them sit close to the windows during the hours with bright light..

i repotted my zz in spring, thinking it was time for it. i saw it struggled after repotting, now i know why, it was still in its dormant period. thanks for this info
Also! I've had my zz plant for over 10 years, its huge! I've read that they actually love being root bound, (mine has been in the same pot the whole time and is constantly throwing out new leaves).
