BIG NEWS! I have created an online course in the ancient craft of making paper by hand. A workshop that you can do at home with recycled materials, and maybe also a great gift for someone for Christmas? The course is at 30% off through all of December! Read more and enroll here: maria-and-the-forest-s-school.teachable.com/p/lets-make-paper-a-creative-papermaking-course-using-only-recycled-material
It has been a dark November here in Norway, literally, no snow and the sun is going down around 15.30. I talk a little bit about my relationship with the dark winters in Norway, and I share with you my mysterious and sort of addictive new exploration of natural plant dye.
- My previous video about plant dye: • I tried natural PLANT ...
- Book about plant dye (in Norwegian): track.adtraction.com/t/t?a=14...
- Book about plant dye (in english): track.adtraction.com/t/t?a=14...
In this video I dyed with:
- Spruce, iron pot as a mordant = beige/yellow
- Alder bark, iron pot as a mordant = beige brown
- Alder cones, iron pot as a mordant = red-ish brown
- Brown/old birch leaves, alum mordant, normal pot = yellow
- St.Johns wort, alum mordant, normal pot, grey yarn = bright green.
- St.Johns wort, alum mordant, normal pot, white yarn = bright yellow.
- St.Johns wort, stems and leaves, iron pot as a mordant = brown
- St.Johns wort, flowers, iron pot as a mordant = purple
- Rubia Tinctorum (Krapp), alum mordant, normal pot = red and pink
Plant dye is not just a hobby, it is a dialogue with nature, the seasons, a travel through our history and a conversation with women from the past. In doing it we are also conserving knowledge that is in many cases forgotten that we might actually have use of today. The chemical textile colors we use today in our clothing are in most cases very damaging to the environment. Is there a better option? I certainly think so, but I think we need to accept that it is an option that takes more time and is a little less accessible. Like with a lot of other things, we need to slow down to be able take care of our planet.
When I talk I have a hard time explaining how magical it actually is, this process of natural dyeing. So, I made a video about it! I hope you will feel the magic. Also if you are a forager, and you don't have anything to forage during the winters, here is something you can try!
If you liked the video it helps me a great deal if you would subscribe, leave a comment or a thumbs up! Thank you!

This is so interesting. There is a gal named Sanna Varra on RU-vid, she knits and since you didn't mention what you do with the yarn after your done with it and it is colored I thought I would mention her to you. She is a lovely gal, who lives in a cabin too. Very soft spoken and a kind person too. I so enjoy your posts here. There are refreshing and I love watching what you do....Blessings, Glenda

I'm so pleased I found your video. I couldn't agree with you more about using your intuition. This beautiful craft of co-creating colour with nature is absolutely a relationship that requires engaging with your senses and trusting your innate knowing. I'm a natural dyer in Australia and I just love collaborating with my surroundings in this way. I do hope you discover a love of knitting or another fibre art as well because there's nothing more satisfying that making something from yarn you dyed.

I laugh because I am also addicted. to collecting, storing and dying yarn with plant material. My cupboards are filled with bags and jars of onion skins, plants twigs and leaves all being collected for dye. I just dyed with black walnut husks now am allowing the dye pot to ferment and ill dye again just to see what color change I might get. Loved the video.

Gosh, Maria, these colours are BEAUTIFUL! It was amazing to see how many different colours you could get just from St. John's Wort! I think you need to learn how to knit now so you can make beautiful sweaters from your own hand-dyed yarns! (As if you don't have enough to do!) Hilsen fra Canada!

This video was beautiful to watch, I hope you know how much we appreciate your films! The colours of the yarn are so pretty and it looks so soft, like it would be easy to make the softest sweaters. I really love those Nordic sweaters I see people wearing. As soon as you mentioned St John’s Wort I was curious because I make an oil from St John’s Wort flowers and leaves (it’s very soothing for tired, sore muscles). My oil always comes out red, so I was surprised how many colours you found to make with it. Colour is very addictive, I understand how you became so excited about plant dyes. Sending you lots of good vibes from Vancouver, Canada 🍁 🧶🤎

What a lovely video Maria, with a beautiful opening sequence, some superb photography, and fabulous landscapes. Oh if only you had charged the camera battery we could have had an extra 10 minutes with you ! I have to wonder what you're going to do with all the yarn you have now accumulated. You'll have to find a friend who knits, or perhaps you could open a shop selling yarn. I am curious though to know what would happen if a garment knitted with your coloured yarn was put in a washing machine ? I'm guessing some of the dye would wash out again ? Anyway, you seem well settled in your new home now, and it's nice to see you doing well. Remember to get as much daylight as possible at this time of year, and enjoy the winter. I'm already looking forward to the next video. I watched this one twice !

You shared this in the dyeing group and I was not expecting such a nice video but I have to say I really enjoyed it! I think so many Scandinavians knit because it's very relaxing and peaceful, good to do when you feel like hibernating, with a pod cast or audio book playing and a cup of something warm to drink. But there's a kind of weaving called "Back Strap Weaving" where you have a really small loom and you can make decorative belts and straps that's very addictive. I think I paid $20 USD for mine, from a woman who makes them who lives in the forest somewhere near Russia and sells them on Etsy.

Might be fun to do a “Temperature Blanket”. That is when you assign a color to a temperature outside. And you quilt the assigned color on the blanket that day or that week. Might be fun to do one per season. And each season use the color of the dyes you have created for what’s growing then. That might be a great way to show everyone the different seasons and different colors they can get. Good luck from the US. Love your videos

Video editing wise, I think this is your best video!🙏💪 Congrats, you're improving a lot. Also, regarding winter and the lack of light, the Yogic culture, between other things, says that there are a couple relevant things one can do: 1- whatever amount of light you normally have at your home, make it 3-5-10x (I actually love cozy, low light rooms so I don't follow this one, but I also still live in sunny Portugal, not Norway ahah) 2- Create a challenge to the mind, because when one does so the energies in the body are activated and used in a more exuberant and vibrant way, not creating that sense of tiredness and sleepy feeling due to the lack of sun light. Traditionally, women would do tasks men normally used to do and men tasks that women normally used to do eheh 😊 it was a easy and effective way to challenge the mind (and bring a good sense of balance between genres ahah)
@Mariaandtheforest
@Mariaandtheforest 2 года назад
Thank you Afonso. I am kind of happy about this one myself too. And thank you for this insight, that is very interesting. I am sure the light thing would work, but like you I kind of like the candle lit winter atmosphere! Makes me sleepy, but also is a good contrast to all the computer work. Creating a challenge, that makes a lot of sense to me. And I think I often do that in the beginning of winter. By February I am often out of ideas and energy, haha. I have challenged myself to run every day, it helps! Do you have a winter challenge for yourself then?
@Justafonso

@@Mariaandtheforest My winter challenge for the last 2 years is to move to Norway 😂 getting closer and closer! But, in reality, I get really really inspired by autumn and winter: I write a lot during this months, I read a lot, I love to decor the house for Christmas and autumn and winter and all that, so I always get excited with this month's, never feel depressed cause of it (a big reason why I want to move to norway, Portugal is too hot and dry for me even during winter eheh).
