I discovered this plant near a creek not far from home, it was striking! Never seen it before. It is in woodlands near roadside.

Nice! I've observed Silene verecunda (Anderson Campion) in the mountains near my home and Silene acaulis (Moss Campion) in the Rocky Mountains.

Silence California also has the glaring red flowers like this species but on a much smaller plant... It grows very dry in chaparral situations ii clearings... Hard to find but worth the effort... I want to try S.Virginica in my California garden for its fantastic display of striking scarlet flowers!!!
