My Mom has 3 gorgeous Coleus plants. I found out how to harvest their seeds and have hundreds of seeds now! I mentioned on a different video that this is my first year gardening, so I research propagation and seed harvesting a lot! My Mom and I took a cutting from one of her Coleus plants to see if we could root it in water...yep! Just as easy as what you guys are showing here. It's doing very well! Thank you for this video! It shows me that we did it right! haha! On a side note- I see your Celosia! I'm in zone 8a and yes- our summers have been brutal! I had planted Celosia in my front garden and they were getting so burnt up that I had to move them to the backyard where we have some shade. I read that they typically love full sun, but I guess not when temps are over 100 degrees! Since I moved them back there, they have been doing very well! Except for 2 of them that appear to have some sort of disease that causes their leaves to become stiff and point straight up...they also have these weird irridescent dots all over them. I keep them seperate from the other plants so the disease or whatever it is doesn't spread. Sorry! I'm a babbler! haha! Thank you for all that you're doing! Your videos are incredibly helpful!

Hi how did the rootings go ? Were they successful? And which worked best ? Just my opinion I thought the pots you put the cuttings/rootings in were quite large ?? That’s a lot of soil for one stem ? I would of thought a smaller pot then when established a little pot up in the larger ones you had ? Look forward to your reply Kind regards

Idk what I did wrong but, maybe ya'll can help me. I made a cutting & now the stem is brown & dry. It's going all the way down my plant & looks like it's going to kill the rest of my plant. Is there something I can do to fact my plant before it dies from dry stems?

What are the lighting and temperature requirements now that they’ve been potted in their own containers?
@SpokenGarden
@SpokenGarden Год назад
Hi Suzi Farley! 👋 Thank you for watching and GREAT questions! After each cutting has grown roots and is now in it's own pot, you can start to treat them like you would a regular plant for temperature and watering, with the caveat that you need to watch them like a hawk so they aren't being over or under-watered. AND, make sure they aren't in any extreme cold or hot temperatures. Just think of any kind of stress that they normally wouldn't like and then know that a regular stress can have a bigger impact on cuttings with new roots because they are still new plants and establishing their root systems. For Coleus, they need part to full shade and moist, but not overly wet soil. So, give the cuttings this, but be sure they don't have any stress during this time, until they are more mature and have fuller, more developed root systems and stem and leaves grown, similar to plant size and development you would find at a nursery. Hope that answers your questions and have fun with any Coleus cuttings you have started! 😉👍

I’m just trying this today …I love the tiny squirrel running around right near you ..where do you over winter your cutting so they stay health until the spring …ty for sharing
@SpokenGarden
@SpokenGarden Год назад
Hi Debbie! 👋 Thank you for watching and for your question! Those squirrels were crazy then. 🐿️ In our zone and climate (Zone 8b), unless you have a heated greenhouse that doesn't get below 55 degrees F, it's best to bring your Coleus cuttings inside your house and keep elevated (because cool are collects on the floor) on a windowsill or shelf. Wait until outdoor temperatures reach at lease 50 degrees at night, and then you can bring back out. If where you live it doesn't get below 50 degrees at night, then you can leave your cuttings outside in a greenhouse or in your landscape. If you have slugs like we do, then you will need to elevate your Coleus cuttings over night so slugs don't start eating them. Hope that helps! 😉

Hi great video! I am trying to propagate but my cuttings seem to be rotting (went directly to soil and used hormones). How many nodes should I be looking to have under the soil?

When the stiklings are rootet in water, what is the best place to locate them? In full light, shade or darkness? Is there any recommendation or the light doen't play any role? Thanks for the beutifull video.
@SpokenGarden
@SpokenGarden Год назад
Hi Selene! 👋 Thank you for watching and for all your great questions! 👍 The best place for your cuttings, either in water or in soil, is in part shade to full shade, especially for coleus cuttings as they mostly like shade or part shade. They do still need light, so no complete darkness. Hope that helps and we hope you create lots of new coleus plants! 😉

How many different types óf coleous would you propagate together? Great video. Have done for 3 years with great results. Water propagation. Never tried the others you showed
@SpokenGarden
@SpokenGarden Год назад
Hi George! 👋👋 We really like propagating coleus by stem cuttings, too!! We try to only put so many stems into a water container that the stems still have space between them in the water, and each stem's set of leaves aren't shaded or covered by any of the other leaves from other cuttings. It just depends on the size of water container or jar we are using, pretty much. Hope that helps answer your question and thank you for watching! 😊😉

I also live in the PNW. Once I’ve transplanted my cuttings, how do I store them for winter? Do they have to come inside or can I over winter them in my portable greenhouse?

Coleus plant does not need Rooting hormone. One of the easiest plant to propagate if the weather conditions are favorable.
@SpokenGarden
@SpokenGarden Год назад
Hi Amit! 👋👋 Yes, thank you for reiterating what we went over in our video. Coleus are super easy to propagate and we used rooting hormone on some of the cuttings to see if they would root faster or have more root development than the non-treated cuttings. Thank you for commenting and for watching our video! 😃😉
