On this plant rescue, we have a mystery plant on the brink of death. Check out this plant rescue video to see if this houseplant can be saved.

Whenever I visit Lowe’s plant section, I always head to the clearance shelf, but on this Lowe’s plant buying trip they didn’t have anything on the shelf. However, one glance at the shelves proved fruitful in this very sick Zebra plant otherwise known as Aphelandra squarrosa.
At first glance, I noticed that they were “wick” watering this plant. I always think “wick” watering is a bad idea and as I began to repot this plant, I quickly noticed why this wicking system was no good for this root bound zebra plant.
Plant Care Tips:
Zebra plant enjoys evenly moist soil and can handle drying out a little in between watering. If you find your zebra plant leaves drooping that is a sign it needs more water. Not to worry, it should bounce back nicely.
Bright, indirect light is best.
If you want to fertilize, give it a boost in the spring when days start to lengthen.

I can't believe they said it was easy to take care of on the tag. Nothing could be further from the truth. The most temperamental plant I've ever had a relationship with. How did it turn out?

It turned out well, but you are right, it is a very temperamental plant.

This plant likes to stay moist never drying out and not to wet . It’s easier than Calathea

One good tip is do NOT go by the tag that is in the soil. Those are generic and get shoved into all types of plants. Look the plant up for proper care. Also the Zebra plant will bloom in late summer. I usually get 3 beautiful yellow flowers that look like roses (sometimes 4 flowers). As much as this plant is thirsty, it is very easy to over water.

I work at a grocery store that sells plants, and I saw one of these poor guys in this exact condition.. of course being a plant psycho I ask if I could take it for free to save it! I can’t believe I just found a video for exactly what I needed 🤣

I had a bunch and they spread mealybugs through 6 plants. Even with treatment I had to throw them away because they wouldn't die. I stopped rescuing from Lowes.

Also knew it as shrimp plant, no doubt because of the flower shape. It came flowering, but didn't again after I had it.😕

Nice job. I was given one by people who had to move due to the pandemic. They told me it was "moody." It doesn't look like any other zebra plant I've seen. It looks more like a tree. It's got a woody trunk, its leaves turn brown and fall off. I'm just not sure what to do with it to make it happier. Definitely not a bushy plant!

Well done!! My Zebra Plant is thriving, too. I will say that it’s still in its nursery pot which is in a decorative pot. The nursery pot fits in such a way in the decorative pot that there is about 3 inches of space under the nursery pot in which that excess water goes into and then through the drainage hole of that pot - the nursery pot fits snugly so that it is suspended in the decorative pot. During maintenance, I noticed roots coming out the bottom hanging. These plants love to stay moist like the alocasia, I don’t think I’m going to repot her but rather up-pot her, add a little soil, wrap the roots around and keep the same well draining set-up as long as possible. Good for you and what a deal for what can be sometimes a hard to find plant 👏👏👏🌞🌺
@SuburbanSill
@SuburbanSill 5 лет назад
OH cool! That is a good idea. I don't typically repot my new plants right away, but when I get something that is unhealthy, I like to check the roots to see what I am working with!!

SuburbanSill And I like the dark foliage on yours. I think yours will get fuller in no time. Mine continues to thrill me and is prolific, I think yours will be, too. Maybe by next year we’ll be able to share. I’m seriously impressed by the amount of growth both you and I have achieved in such a short time. 👍👍👏👏👏I’m sad to say that I’ve recently been back to that nursery and the other Zebras haven’t faired as well. They look sad. I hope they find a kind soul to rescue them, like you rescued yours... mines was the fairest of them all and I remain delighted to have found her on that day.

@SuburbanSill

I used regular potting soil. Personally, I really like Black Gold All Purpose Potting Soil, but I think you could get away with any well draining soil. Do you have a favorite soil?

Thank u for the video & the explanation. I’ve this plant at home, I put it away from the sun . Unfortunately, the edges of its leaves getting brown and easy to break . Do u have an idea what is the cause of this problem?
@jolus6678
@jolus6678 2 года назад
It doesn't make a good houseplant long- term. It loves dappled light, and super high humidity with lots of air movement. In less than ideal growing conditions, it attracts lots of sap sucking insects including aphids, spider mites, and scale. It's best not to let it bloom if the plant isn't at least a couple of feet tall either because blooming tends to weaken the plants and often leads to their demise. Unfortunately the plant is often small and already in bloom when purchased. I just bought two of a specialty variety called 'snow queen' ( has much more white in the leaves) but to keep outside my door under my covered deck here in South Florida. Here the humidity is super high overnight, reaching 90% or more, and dropping to about half that during the day.

Hello, would you have any clue on how to propagate this plant ? Can the leaves grow roots or would I have to split off a whole branch off and propagate it?
@SuburbanSill
@SuburbanSill 5 лет назад
Here is what I found online: Zebra plants can be propagated with stem tip cuttings of side shoots taken in the spring or summer. The tops of plants that have lost their lower leaves can also be cut off and rooted. Dust each cut with a rooting hormone and strike in a peat moss/perlite mix. Hold in a heated propagating case or a terrarium at 75°. thegardenhelper.com
