Hi Everyone!
Welcome back to another episode of plantation cooking with my mom and her brothers! I feel genuinely very grateful to learn these traditional and local recipes from the generation above! I hope you enjoy!
Visit my blog!
www.hawaiifood...
Shoyu Hot Dog
1 package Redondo hot dogs
1 medium sweet onion
1/4 cup shoyu amzn.to/3Zqa9Yn
3/8 cup brown sugar amzn.to/3JTNePy
Fried Chicken (3-3 1/2 lb of chicken)
1/2 cup all purpose flour
1 T paprika amzn.to/3TWnOoU
1-1/2 tsp salt amzn.to/3M9Zoq6
1/2 tsp pepper amzn.to/3nmwAAs
Mix the flour with the paprika, salt and pepper. Coat the chicken pieces and fry, skin side down on medium high for 10 minutes in vegetable oil. (I used olive oil for sauteing and stir-frying). Turn and lower the heat, and fry on low for 20 more minutes. Juices should run clear.

To clean your oil, get the oil really hot. Make a slurry of cornstarch and water. Pour into hot oil and keep stirring. The slurry will pick up all the crumbs in the oil and your oil will be clean to use again!

Hiiii Cari! First and foremost, baby Ellie! OMGEEE! She’s sooooo kawaiiiii and such a good girl! So content in her carrier. I couldn’t believe it when your mama said that Ellie could eat some of the fried chicken. My first thought was…..already?!? Where has the time gone? I love watching your whole family cook together. I love hearing the stories of how your mama and your uncles grew up. Both dishes looked so good! We can’t get Redondo’s hot dogs out here. I always get the Portuguese sausage and love it. Our son and his roommate are down visiting from Oregon, and will be heading back up this weekend. I was trying to think of something different to make for bento’s for them. Thank you mama and Uncle Ben for your recipes! I’m so going to make them! I cannot wait for the next video! Take care everyone!

Hi Cari - Is that Colvita olive oil made especially for frying foods? That's a healthier approach, as I tend to use the regular oil to fry foods. Thanks. I've been binge-watching all the missed/old videos, getting a lot of tips for local cooking.

Yes I believe so. But I know my mom uses avocado oil these days. She says that it can also fry at a high temperature and its supposed to be a healthier option!

Growing up on the Big Island meals were simple. Nothing that required watching over for a long time or lengthy procedures. Lots of vegetables, proteins were cut up to stretch. Unlike those places where if you can finish a 96 oz steak, it's free. Grandma could use that steak and feed us for a month. Lol. Frank Food and Miko hotdogs are far better than Redondos. It's a Big Island thing. Just like Aloha soyu better than kikoman.

Are you cross-contaminating with the tongs? You should always use different tongs for ràw and cooked chicken. It definitely shows you two gals do not cook often.

I'm sorry. You all look lovely. But the word "plantation" is just too painful
@VinegarWithAnAttitude
@VinegarWithAnAttitude Год назад
In your part of the country, maybe. But here in Hawaii, especially for us Japanese people, the word is only synonymous with “old-style”, “family”, and “love.” I’m glad I found this channel, because this is my only connection to my plantation roots. My grandmas on both sides gone. My mom, gone. Good thing for this channel! Keep the traditions alive!!

Plantation in Hawai'i for me brings back of a time that I wish I lived. Family, unity and hardwork comes to mind. When I was a little guy, I got in a little kalohe (rascal) trouble. My dad sent me to the Big Island aka the island of Hawai'i to stay with my uncle and aunt who lived the plantation way. It brought me back to the aina (land) and refocused me to what was important.

Plantation for me brings me back to my grandparents imigrating to Hawai’i to work very hard in the fields and the simple but yummy foods they used to make with what they had which we still make today. Through their hard work we can enjoy our lives in Hawai’i now which I cherish and will always be so appreciative of my grandparents for starting a life here for us in Hawai’i! We are so lucky and blessed to be a part of this legacy! Thanks Cari and family for this episode of yummy foods from the old’n days! Mahalo 🤙🏽😊
