I like the fill and empty method during the water change in the other video. I always wanted to try that method myself. Thanks for the shout out man. I sometimes like to use the lava rubble method depending on the scape. Probably is a better method for larger aquariums. Mine are all too small at the moment, so thanks for bringing this method to life and for the shout out.

I have been watching dirted tank videos for days and I wish I had seen this one a long time ago. It has been most helpful. The only thing I would change is you sift and we the soil before putting it in. It helps keep air bubbles out. I also squeezed out the excess water before placing it in the bottom. It really it’s down any cloudy seepage issues with the dirt. I’m using your lava rock trick. You just got a follower. Awesome job!

55G 2 inches minimum of ProMix organic potting soil covered with 1/2" of thoroughly rinsed coarse construction sand. It made the water a little yellow at first from the tannins but that cleared up after a few 10% water changes. My plants love it.

I would put the top gravel layer before the parts of the hardscape, just to make sure no soil from around the hardscape isn’t covered up and cloud up the water. I plan on doing a soil setup on my 31 gallon for the first time and I think I’m going to overkill the top substrate, by doing soil, coarse gravel and then smoother but still coarse sand

Eco complete seems to be amazing also doesn’t cloud or muddy the water. Just pour it straight from the bag into the tank then fill the tank up add root tabs to the soil and ferts for about 6 months and then you’ll be set

Using the soil with the rubble in the bags looks like it works very well together! Also, we recommend vermiculite in the hobby, but is actually a bad clay to recommend. Bentonite, kitty litter, is a far better option. vermiculite structure actually makes nutrients unobtainable and holds on too well.

DIY AQUAPROS yeah look into it. I may be misremembering the reason why, but I remember learning it is a less desirable option in my soils class. I am pretty sure they are more unobtainable, but I could be off. I will check my book to make sure.

Hi mike, I took your advice and used organic potting soil as the substrate for my new planted freshwater aquarium . I changed the water 11 times and the soil is still leaching into the water. The soil is covered with 3 inches of course and fine gravel. I am very careful not to disturb the gravel. How long do you think it will take for this leaching to stop and this brown water to go away?

Most dirted tanks have a 1.5-2.5 sand cap. Do we just lightly plant in sand or do we push down 2”?

Wonderful. I want to experiment this in my 6 gallon before I take it to my 55 g. But one problem. What filter can i use for the 6 gallon? since its not planted now I am using an internal filter that creates a little too much of current. It might stress the plants if i continue using it. What else can i use? The glass is just 4mm thick - so i dont think its strong enough to hold a HOB either..!?
