Earlier this spring, I put in a new flowering dogwood tree to bring some lovely spring color to the side garden. Let's take a look!

Very pleased to see you prioritizing native plants in your garden, Jenny. Especially important to go native at the tree and shrub layer; they do so much to support our local ecosystem. If you haven’t already, I’d recommend looking up the work of Dr Doug Tallamy. He opened up my eyes to the importance of planting natives, and its changed the way I garden. Keep spreading the message of planting native!

I planted my second Redbud tree in same spot both died, I am just letting the second one stay in the spot and hope for a miraculous resurrection ! Love your little Dogwood. They are hardy as mine survived being dug up and left partially un-dug for a month while we put a pool in last summer. This year nary a brown spot or a curled leaf. Just pretty green ones and it also bloomed.

Good luck with the redbud!

It’s beautiful. And, somehow, you heard me saying “not there, move it this way” for your first location even though it was a month before I said it and that would be impossible, lol, because your second choice was the spot I was thinking. 😀😀😀. Backseat gardening, lol. You do all the work and I sit in my house a month later and talk to the screen. 😀😀😀

Five days of rain?! I wish Mother Nature would spread out more. Share. It's already bone dry in Minneapolis. And that's after our third snowiest winter. I've grown that geum, Prairie Smoke. If you leave the blooms (or smoke) they will reward you with more plants spread by seed. I went back 3 years in my photos, when I planted my alchemilla mollis, and they were about same size as your plant. Now they're ginormous! About 18" diameter. I love how they make water droplets look like diamonds. Ooh, my sister took me to a garden center (Green Barn in Isanti) where they have good shrub prices. I wasn't going to get them this year for my garden renovation, but haven't seen 'Double Play Blue Kazoo' spirea so they came home with me, along with 'Heaven Scent' Jacob's ladder, 'Thread Leaf' amsonia, 'Prairie Dropseed' grass and a few other plants for $171 total. My sister is a bad influence on me.

Note that this was filmed in early May, and while we did have five days of rain then, we have only had 1 rainfall since then - six weeks later. very, very dry here.

A dogwood will bring brightness to your garden during the spring season. My garden is forever changing and at times I say, "Why did I plant that there?" Hopefully I am learning something along the way. LOL

Love my dogwood tree. Actually I have two dogwoods. One is pink and the other white but they are both Kousa. I’ve had problems with disease in the past. I live in southern Indiana.

I have a shade garden very similar to yours with a pink Florida dogwood at one end and a white Kousa at the other. I’m lucky if I get 2 flowers on each. I’m trimming nearby tree branches and hopefully they’ll bloom better with more sun. You live further south, so maybe you’ll have better luck.

What type are the older trees? I have very old maples that don’t allow any close plants. Please let me know what you have in this garden ? I love you channel……

Dogwood trees need sunlight at least six hours. How is it gonna get any sun if it’s planted North and canopied under those other larger trees - I’m pretty sure it won’t ever bloom??

It gets dappled sun. Full of buds ready to pop open soon.
