Using old stumps is exactly what nature does too. In my little bit of woodland, where the previous owners cut down trees and then left the stumps behind, seedlings of other trees have germinated on top of the stumps and grew into large trees. It doesn't make them any more susceptible to wind damage or drought or anything like that. These new trees seem perfectly happy to take on these stumps as nursery pots.

@@debbiehenri345 When we lived in Northwest USA I was awed at seeing ancient trees that had fallen many decades ago acting as nursery trees for younger saplings that were themselves good size trees. It is indeed natures way of regeneration, a circle of life

You've been an incredible influence in my journey into gardening and self sufficiency. Your gardening methods have been so applicable to my small gardening area. Well I think this is mostly pros. You see this in nature as trees grow on nursing trees benefitting from all the slow released nutrients. Water retention should be better and the new tree can use old tree root ways to easily set new roots. It would have been better to let it rot for a while as the bacteria could use nitrogen from the air. Now i would have added more nitrogen to the bed to replace the nitrogen that is going to be fixed by the bacteria.

@@kathrynbillinghurst188 You can eat them, and they apparently taste like a mix of almond and coconut. For each tuber you plant, you get between 10-20 in return because of its fast growth. It isn't native to Oz, but it likes very heavy soils like mark was complaining about in this vid. It's a perfect fit for his area.

Thank you! Yes, I did overwinter the chillies in milk bottles and about half survived despite me not caring much for them. Because we had so many other chillies growing (and doing well with better flavours), I decided to cancel the project. I might mention this in an upcoming video with the footage I have... not sure, though. Cheers :)

Do you ever feel scared of your mulch around your plants? You have so many poison critters in your country and you're making a pleasant home for them there. PS: I happen to be planting a tree over a stump and you helped me out!

Mulching around the plants and trees doesn't scare me but yes it can create a hiding place for snakes and spiders. Most Aussies with similar gardens instinctively take care when working outdoors just in case we inadvertently disturb and surprise a potentially dangerous critter. Most of the time, the snakes (in particular) are long gone by the time we get there thankfully... I have surprised a few and it's always a heart-skipping moment lol... Cheers :)

Welcome back Mark!! You truly are an inspiration to my very near future project to start a self-sufficient 40 acre property in Southern California high desert region. I’ll be wanting plant the right trees and you have so well informed videos in the hopes I can also be successful. I’m thinking I should do a soil test, but that is something I’ve not done before. I hope that I’ll be able to reach out or you for advice. When I get back home to Australia, I hope that I’ll be able to visit your awesome gardens. G'day Manu, I would love 40 acres myself! Soil tests can be as simple as a DIY kit or more in-depth with a professional lab test. If you weren't too sure, it wouldn't hurt to know the soil makeup. Thanks and all the best :)

Making your lady happy,while abstaining to eat that berry yourself, that is what a proper man does thumbs up for that,nice video as usual the know how is useful,as far as my garden goes i have about 80 centimetres of good ground and sand at the bottom.
