Just a tip from a penny pincher: At the end of the season, scour your Home Depot, Lowes and the like for Hostas they are selling at a reduced price. By this time they are over growing the pots, sometimes look really bad but can usually be divided into several plants. One year I bought 5 containers, the leaves looked bad but the roots were healthy. I ended up with about 20 Hosta plants after dividing them and planting for lots of volume the following spring. This is how I started my Hosta garden and it's beautiful. I've also done this with day Lilys, saves so much money and you get to look forward to a beautiful spring. Edit to the original post: I finally decided to go to Etsy and order a couple things, one being an Empress Wu Hosta. It was $18, was packaged carefully and is about 12" tall. Only two leaves but after a week in the ground already has another one and is super healthy. Also bought some bare root Cranesbill. Ordered 20 roots for $15 and was sent 26 very healthy looking roots with growth nodes. Seems like a great way to go.

@@princessresinista9080 Home Depot has really good quality clearance. Walmart has… really good prices on clearance… But you can still score at both sometimes. I have a $1.68 yellow hibiscus that I saved from Walmart, it feels even better to bring back dying plants than to get nice new ones.

Laura, you are such a bad influence on my pocket book. ;) Just went this morning and picked up Supertunia Vista Paradise and Lemon Coral Sedum.... Wanted some additional PW items, but garden center is sold out. I took the last Paradise and last 3 lemon coral sedum. They said they're having trouble keeping up with PW demand. I can't help but think 'Is this due to Garden Answer?' - I mean seriously, 864k subscribers. PW owes you a huge commission. :) I'm going back this coming weekend to hopefully add some hostas. Oh, and David Austin Roses. This year hubby is going to run drip irrigation as my flower beds have grown to 9 beds (we have 3+ acres), soooooo onward and upward creating more beds. Thank you Laura, Aaron and Benjamin for sharing your journey with us.

It’s mainly due to the pandemic. More people at home, more people are gardening and learning, which is awesome. But no doubt this channel has increased demand to some extent, I think that happens a lot with products like pots cuz she’ll show something new and then a day later you go to check them out and they’re sold out. 😂 Your property sounds interesting, I hope it all goes well!

Love your hosta garden! The border rocks are a gorgeous touch! In another video, you planted some dark leaf impatiens in the shade. You mentioned you have trouble with impatiens. They can be tricky, but they thrive where I live in IL. Where I live the longer, dark leaved impatiens are called sun impatiens because they thrive in sun and partial sun. The lighter olive colored, shorter leaved impatiens only handle shade where I live. Hope this helps. Our soil is a bit more alkaline.

Hello Laura and Aaron, THANK YOU, I'm SO EXCITED. I am tackling all different areas of my garden and am on a tight budget. I have finally found what I hope will be a decent garden centre and am going to buy ONE hosta for an area in my garden that has a monkey puzzle tree and 2 gunneras. I have been thinking hostas would look perfect in that area. Would you be able to show new gardeners like me HOW TO DIVIDE hostas. I've only been gardening since I found your videos in May this year. I finally feel inspired! I've already made one area of my garden using different perennials that I've found all over the place and were dying. (They are thriving)! I cut back a wisteria that was dying and it now has new growth! I've also made containers up by watching your videos and they look beautiful. Would you be able to tell us actually when you should transplant pernnials? I have some ROSE trees, rhodadendrums and a magnolia tree (only about 3 feet tall). We are in June now and I know on one of your videos I'm sure you said when the plants are 'dormant'. Your advice and knowledge would be greatly appreciated as I'm a Nurse and live alone, so the garden which is on THREE levels is a nightmare but I'm trying to work through it on a budget. I was SO pleased when I saw this video on hostas as I'm excited to go shopping for my very FIRST hosta later today. (I pray this garden centre will be decent). THANK YOU BOTH I WOULD BE REALLY LOST WITHOUT YOU. God bless, Wendy (North Wales, UK)

A lot of people here do cast iron plant under live oaks, but Hostas are so varied in their leaf structures and colors that I think they’re much more interesting. Even with the slug problems we have, I still think they’re worth it. They do well here in zone 8b, even with morning sun in some areas. Thank y’all for doing this! 🙌💚🌿🍃

As a bonafide hostaholic, all I can say is ahhhh! By the way, hostas don't need nearly as much water as you might think. I have many that grow on the North side of my house that get no supplemental water and they do just fine. So no need to go nuts on the drip. You may consider moving the blue ones into the more shaded area and the other green/yellow ones into the part that gets more sun. Blue ones prefer less sun. If they get too much, they burn more easily.

This looks great! An instant hosta garden, I love it! I overlooked hostas for many years until I found out you could eat them! Now they're one of the most beautiful plants in my edible forest garden!!! I eat the shoots in the spring and the flowers in the summer! They always seem to come back strong after I pick them, and I've got a ton, so I don't think anyone notices the difference! :)

Love that garden bed. I agree, I love it best yet of all you have done there. My husband doesn’t understand sometimes when I change things. But we have to be happy with what we have planted, right? It looks amazing. Tfs. 👏🏻💕👏🏻

I love hosta gardens! They are so calming and cooling to me! I totally agree with needing a solid color among the variegated varieties, it gives the eye a place to rest. I also love ferns and hellebores mixed with the hostas which add a different texture and color. I must add a 'Wheee!!!' to one of my hosta beds.❤❤❤

I love hostas! I have quite a few of them in my shade garden. I love the restful, cooling affect they give my garden here in the hot, humid south. Plus I love being able to divide them up every 3 years or so and get more plants out of them. It’s a great way to save money👍🏻

I LOVE hostas!! I have most of mine in pots on a shaded terrace, and just mix in a few pots with flowering annuals - SO beautiful! I love the variety of leaves and colours! One thing - in that bed, i would put a lot more different sorts of daffodils, that would be beautiful in early spring, before the Hostas kick in 🙂

Love those Wheee! ones. This is a beautiful bed of lushness. Love the rock border and the lemon coral sedum just adds that magical touch. I really like that Lemon Lace Elderberry. I want some of those!!! They looked so pretty and a pop of bright green. Can’t wait to see this bed through out summer and fall. 🌱🌿🍃🤗 PS - That rain tree is simply gorgeous.

Beautiful 🤗💜! I love the different foliage color interests that these hostas give. I do not have a lot in my landscaping, but I think it could use a few different ones 🥰. Thanks for sharing.

I love the rock wall around the bed as well. My husband is a rockhound, so I can always send you pretty rocks if you like. ❤
