My favorite fruit...The Mango. I have learnt the best way, the best place and the best time to plant the very first tree in my food forest- a mango tree. It has been given a great start and is now ready to live for maybe 500 years. Thank you Geoff Lawton for giving the good explanations.
love and peace to everyone

NOTE: ALWAYS CHECK THE POUCH of a wallaby or kangaroo that has just been hit by a vehicle to see if there is a live baby inside so you can potentially save it´s life. I should have mentioned it in the video at 20:26.

One warning, if you bury meat, a scavenger may dig it up thus uprooting the tree - so I would recommend some wire fencing laying flat on the ground and affixed. My experience was burying a fish scraps in the soil for corn. Something dug them up (we have skunks, opossums, and raccoons are my guess, but could even be my dog).

Right at 10:27 in the top right of the frame, when your friend was showing you the sand to use in setting your mango seed, there is a plant, lots of them there that is a great spinach. Cooked with garlic, onion and a little oil and salt, it is great with bread, or boiled in coconut milk with ochra, makes a great soup.

@@TheWeedyGarden I'm glad you met Geoff Lawton. I really hope you two will work together - that would be a principle of permaculture. The large animal carcass under the mango wasn't the best idea. Seedling mangos don't usually come true from seed, take much longer to fruit than grafted varieties, and usually have a sub-par taste with a lot of fiber (Geoff hits on this very well). Love your spot in Australia; truly a beautiful place. Great filming and photography too! Keep it up! I love mangos too; have over 40 varieties. And dry periods during flowering is good. The thing that will nuke your flowers is powdery mildew; it can attack your panicles/flowers and kill all of your mango flowers within days which means zero fruit for that year. Anthracnose usually forms as the fruit develops and leaves black streaks and spots on your fruit. Stem-end rot also forms as an attack on developing fruit. A good spraying of fungicide (natural or not), can significantly reduce these issues. Spray when the panicles emerge after 1 week, when the fruit is the size of a pea, size of an egg, and then every several weeks as needed.

The problem with planting mango from seed is it may not be true to type. Besides it could take 15-20 years to begin flowering. If you'd like to pluck your fruit off your mango trees early, graft them with stems from some mature mango trees whose fruit you like w.r.t. variety. You could also graft a different variety on different branches and you'd end up with a single tree that bears a variety of fruit.

If you keep it cool and dark it should be fine if you have used clean water without chlorine and cloramine (town water), used black strap molasses, and kept it cool and dark. Should always smell sweet. A bit of white mould is normal. It is the fungus living off the anaerobes on top. Just leave it. It’ll be fine. Furthermore, while mango is considered to be originated from South Asia not all the varieties of mangos come from there. There are many varieties developed in other countries like Nam Doc Mai from Thailand and R2E2 from Aus. Although India is probably is the source of most varieties and is said there are 1000 varieties there (probably not).

you have a great style of presenting, i like your planting style too, i use a similar method myself, but it was just what seemed to feel right. My Murraya hedges grown in a similar way have grown very fast, from 6 inch high to 5 feet ( if i didn't trim) in 2 years, one thing i was focusing on was water reservoir, when i dug down to the c horizon, i made sure the base of the excavation was always sloping downward , so as it would serve as both an place to fill in with compost/manure(cow/chook)/soil+lime(about 2%+dolomite1.5% vol) but also to create a permeable zone which could contrast the impermeable c horizon and create a sort of underground dam or well. I'm on a slope and on top of a ridge so this is more important, but it seems to work. I can do intermittent long waterings and the roots seem to have gone down into that deep trench. And the geomotry of the trench is important so like a pool, all the root systems should have some refuge under the 'overflow point'

Interesting way to plant it 😊 I tried to plant a mango tree once, but the cold weather in Victoria was too much for it. So ….I plant other trees that grow in the climate I live. I still want to plant a mango tree, I love it! And I miss having it close by like I had when I was in Brazil. …. One day, one day….

Mr Weedy, next mango stone you get, put it in your worm farm and wait a while. The worms will do all the hard work for you, no knife needed.

If you want to open a mango seed again, there is a small hole on the rim you can use to pry open the shell with a knife

They are. That´s what I DO...Show it through my lens...but I know what you mean. When you become a "permie" you see it like this.

Thank you Weedy man. Did you know cassowarys eat road kill. The sad thing is they get killed as well from the cars. Its a bit of a problem here in far north qld. I loved your lesson on opening your mango seed and the loving care to plant it. This latest lesson is a another master piece. 👏👏👏👏👏 ❣

Thanks Bean Sprout. Yeah...and foxes, crows and all sorts of other animals. It´s a sad thing, especially driving west of NSW. I can remember last time I drove out there, there was about 40 road kills per km. I almost lost it with frustration. Most of them are the trucks who just drive through them at night and don´t slow down. Love to see someone do something about it, but so far there has been ro real solution.

always check them for a pulse too if you plan on taking them into your car. Have heard stories of wild animals waking up from unconsciousness in the trunk... You don't want to clean the mess after an animal that wakes up from a trauma in a panick......
