I soak whole grains overnight and then put them in the chicken run. The chickens never eat them all and they till a lot into the soil where it sprouts and the chickies find it again another day. I put wire rings around certain spots and allow the grains to grow into grass for about 7 days and then let them have a feast! Its an alternative to having a barren run or planting a pasture that will need to be mowed.
I've been at this for several years (70 lady in NC). I started with making wire "cages" that I call "rotational grazing" :) After a year those beds are growing nice and thick and the chickens are not decimating it so I'll dispense with those cages ad move them to a larger area. My point being that even in my 45" rain per year location, it takes a year for the grasses and brassicas to get strong enough root systems to survive a season of grazing :) Best wishes for your project!
Just found your lovely channel! Loved seeing your girls… and, boy… poke their little heads through the fence to peck around. Always ‘greener’ on the other side?! LOL I’ll watch some more current videos to find out how it all turned out! Continued Blessings!!!
This is the first video of yours that I have seen. I really enjoyed it! You are a lovely, sweet lady. I'm so happy for you that you have a garden and chickens. Fun! I've had a similar idea about growing for chickens, but I don't have any...yet. ;) All the best to you from California!
Hi! I just saw your comment. Sorry I’m 6 months late to respond! Thanks for your kind words, and for watching and commenting on this video. I hope you have your chickens and pasture by now. 🙂 (I was born in California!)
Hey! Thanks for talking about the 60° sleeping out thing... I didn't know until now that started with your dad! You may be interested to know it has been passed down to my kids! That's the rule for us, too, because that's what you told me!!
Yes. Two videos after this, I did an update. The video is called “How Does Your Garden Grow?” and it’s about 14:30 into the video that I talk about and show the update on the pasture. Thank you for asking. 🌱
One other suggestion... only use the sprinkler at night... though youvwould be better served using drip irrigaton for the grass... much more water to the ground instead of evaperation... when i lived in texas, i watered with a sprinkler for 2 hours in late spring and it only damped 1/8 of an inch, making juat a crust on the ground
Here in Colorado, when you lay down seed, you water all day long to keep it wet. Evaporation is so fast, we have to water some spots every 2-4 hours to sprout seeds.
@@theurbanthirdhomestead the sandy soil here forces me to start seeds in small pots (even corn) then plant them in deeper holes... worked pretty good on the corn
Your pasture grass was formulated for what animals ? Not sure what gresses they eat but if you get the one geared to sheep, it has alot of the other things chickens eat. And id you let it go to seed u will only have to plant it once. Do you use the rock trick for desert water ? Rocks get cooler at night and catch the early morning dew to give watee to nearby planta...
