My garlic is a nard neck brought here in 1947 just after ww2 from my father cousin. He grew it until his death in 2000 now I grow it. The genealogy is 73 + years old I also gave some to my cousin in Illinois he grows it we put in quite a few about 70 cloves. The best you have ever tasted.
I remember when I first started gardening I was having pest issues with my outdoor container plant, I put a section of garlic clove in the soil and inadvertently grew garlic lol
Luke, I'm in my 60"s and have had a vegitable garden since I was a kid. I love your videos and I always learn something from them. I never grew Garlic, but now I will. Keep up the good work.
Ok. I took out the garlic l had left. Well l took 3 big ones..... so this is my first time as well as a first time gardening. So it’s learning season.... here we go. !!!
I so look forward to seeing every video you do..I find myself cutting time off my gym workout on the days I work in the garden because after I watch one of your videos I get so inspired to grow my own organic veggies..I always over plant so everybody I know gets hooked up!
We lost some bulbs last year (1st year growing), but managed to harvest around 15 bulbs from the approx. 20 I planted. We consumed garlic scape paste (scapes and olive oil blended in the ninja), then started in on the garlic. I only saved 2 bulbs for re-planting. the new ones I bought for planting are so tiny in comparison. I want to plant a lot more this year, but it was really hard not eating those last two I grew.
I am new to growing garlic; haven't actually done it yet. I've been gardening for 20+ years, each year is more successful than the one before. I am in NE Wisconsin, I have never mulched my garden. You mention animal bedding for mulch - is that small animal? The only product I find is pine or cedar, not necessarily cheap and I don't want to add the acidity to my garden soil?? Am I mistaken? Thanks for your videos, I learn a lot from you!
Good morning, Luke. I very much appreciate all your videos and have really learned a lot from them. I'm in NW Ohio and would like to plant garlic in containers (10 gal grow bags) would I plant deeper than 2 inches? And, would planting them the first week of October be too soon? Thank you, Mary
my garden, while looking good, didnt produce very well. thought about quitting, but decided HECK, GARDENING IS FUN!!! so i planted the garlic a couple of days ago. waiting for MI Gardener store to restock for next season!!!
Hi from Flint, Mi here... I have to say, I'm glad I have you!!!! I started watching in March, and pretty much did everything you told me to! I was kinda waiting for you to post this!! My garlic will live in one of my raised tomato beds this winter! Cleaning the bed this weekend, planting garlic Monday or Tuesday, tucking them in and wishing them well. So excited to see it next year!!! Thanks for a great first time experience and walking us through everything!! My freezer is almost full, my pantry is overflowing with home canned goodness, and my heart is filled with joy!! Thanks for EVERYTHING!! Happy gardening and HAPPY HARVEST, Y'ALL!!!!
@@pamelaanderson249 I'm actually in the Township, just near Bishop. I'm lucky enough to have well water. They've said it's safe, but I have friends that live a few miles away hooked to flint city water, and they still don't trust it. In past years, he filled 5-gallon jugs with well water from the hose at his mom's, who was also in the township so he could water when it didn't rain. Mom passed away last year, so he didn't put in a garden but he's working on it this year and also thinking of a pond for collecting rainwater, but until then, he'll just fill up at my house.
Look at that sunny warm day! My garden and everyone else's around here froze hard on 9/3! Even if hooped and covered!! Snowed here as well in Montana. Lost most everything but the cruciferous and root vegies. The one thing that shocked me was the artichoke!! My first year growing it and it had no problems!! Will be eating them this weekend!! Where did I get my seeds? Yep right here from Luke! In 40 years of gardening here we have never had a freeze this early so winter is looking scary!!
Thank you for this useful video Luke. I didn't have a successful first garlic harvest, but I think this video will change things for year 2. When growing ginger is there a difference between seed ginger and store bought ginger (as with garlic)? Please do a ginger 101 guide.
Bummed that the waitlist that is supposed to notify me never seems to work. Been waiting on garlic and got busy and now almost all is sold out... surprised you didn’t do the off center middle row method to get more garlic in the bed. Luke did you decide that didn’t work as well?
Haha I just came inside from planting my garlic from MIGardener, then I saw this video lol. Turns out I did it correctly. Thanks for the tip of when to mulch, I wasn't sure about that.
I got organic bulbs of hardneck music garlic. I have like 13 heads and have 5-6 big cloves in it on each one. Im going to plant them this october. Tried the grocery store ones and yeah we never got anything from it
Have you ever planted Spanish Rojo? I had a chance to eat some when I was sent to Rota, Spain. I liked it and decided to grown a pound this year. It arrived two days ago. Nice big bulbs. If you or anyone out there have, how did you like the taste?
I am a South African pensioner, my biggest problem is water, my spinach is vbirning cannot grow anything in the suburb, municipal water is so expensive, just waiting to harvest when the rains come 🤔
How do you store your seed garlic for planting in the fall? I'm more curious about the temperature to store it? I read not too cool because it will trigger it to grow
I have few questions. 😁🖐 We don't have a garden, we live in an apartment on the 20ish floor 😅 but we do have a balcony with direct sunlight. I wanna plant onions in empty 5L plastic bottles (recycled). How much soil should I put and max cloves I can plant in it? Thanks! 😁😁🌷🌼🌻🌺🍃🍂🍁
I planted my garlic cloves (store bought) last week and it is already starting to sprout. Will it survive the winter? I live in Niagara Falls, Ontario.
I watched a previous one in which you planted between your rows, so they staggered the garlic in the rows on either side....sort of like one could draw triangles from the garlic in one row to the other. Now I see you did't do that. Any particular reason?
Have to disagree with you a little. Not planting the "runts" is only super important when planting actual seed which has fsr more variation than planting garlic cloves which are all clones of each other. That said garlic grows better when it grows from larger cloves since the clove is the food for the young plant. But you can build up small garlic through successive planting in high fertility soil. Your planting advice was great though. :)
I know looks can be deceiving, but those garlic look like they are more like 4 inches apart and rows more like 6-8 inches apart! Is it just me?? Can I really plant them just 2 inches apart????
Joanne Owens No, I do not mean seed garlic, as in regular bulbs of garlic whose several cloves can be individually planted to produce a garlic bulb each. Hard neck garlic grows a garlic scape which if not cut mid season will produce many (eg 50-100) little "bulbils" which can be individually planted to grow into a small, kind of single clove, garlic bulb. If that in turn is replanted in a 2nd season, it will grow into a more regular sized bulb with cloves. (See www.seeds.ca/d/?n=web/ebulletin/2016-08-en/articles/garlic for a better explanation). Reasons to grow from bulbils: 1) A good, safer way to start your own garlic garden without susceptibility to soil born diseases, like garlic nematodes, that once introduced into your soil can take years to extinguish. If you just plant store bought cloves (or seed garlic that is not nematode free), you may introduce disease into your soil. 2) It can be a quicker, more economical way to bootstrap to a larger number of garlic plants, albeit taking a couple years to do so (but still producing more plants than if, say, 4 cloves produce 16 after 1 year, then 16 after 2 years). $3.75 for a garlic bulb with a handful of cloves that will produce a handful of bulbs after 1 year is kind of expensive. And if you eat any, it can take years to ramp up to several dozen bulbs harvested each year. 3) Evidently "bulbil-grown garlic is larger and more vigorous than conventional clove-grown garlic". Googling "bulbil" info is difficult because results are polluted with the ole regular garlic "bulb" info.
"Easiest crop to grow"? No, that distinction goes to dill; plant it once, and you'll never have to plant it again. That said, I really appreciate your seed garlic. I tried several varieties last year, saved the best of the harvest for seed, and will be trying a couple of new varieties this year.
I think that the MIGardener should do a COMPLETE EPISODE on 'acclimatizing' your plants to your growing conditions. To often you buy seeds that were grown in some perfect paradise conditions like California or Hawaii, and the second you plant them in the REAL WORLD, your results are pathetic! We need to not just start selling seeds based on the plant type but the conditions in which they're used to!
I just love your videos. I’m hoping next year, God willing, I’ll be able to grow my first garlic crop. I’m learning soooo much from you! I really really appreciate you taking the time to teach us how to garden. God has given you a gift.
Hey Luke. My names Kathi and I’ve been gardening on my own since early 1980’s and grew up in the garden with my Dad. I was given two rows every year, different every year too he said best way to learn each veggie. He was right, ♥️ And I think of him there watching when I’m in the garden even today. My Mom- she was the flower and bush gardens so I learned lots about flowers and bushes. On my OWN, I’ve been 3 years researching the medicinal herbs- and plants , I make salves and shampoo and just today I’m doing white clovers that generally get mowed down. Anyway- I stumbled on your channel being on the up next and I’ve subscribed 👍. I prefer channels that are natural -, and those that stay true to themselves and not do and say things you KNOW exactly which channels they got that from. 😄😄. There’s a lot spent on trying to make your garden PRETTY. I plant it, weed it, harvest and eat/preserve. There’s channels uses cattle panels to have plants grow UP, and I’d definitely have those if I could afford it to grow vertical for the space - I have quite a few gardens in ground , I have enough land to put in another BUT well, I’m at the stage of living where my body seems to act older than my mind thinks it is 😄. I’ve been binge watching you and REALLY enjoy your channel. ♥️
Going back and watching the old videos, it's super hard to find the "if you haven't watched that one" references, like the rehabbing your soil one. It would be great if you put the links straight into the description/notes, or something like an index to the key videos to check out for new subscribers on your website. But love the content!!
Excited to try garlic again this season, I have good certified seed garlic...but I'll be honest, the best potato harvest I've ever gotten, came from store bought potatoes. I purchased some highly touted seed potatoes this season along with store bought, and I was extremely disappointed in the seeds, maybe got 2-3 pounds out of a 5 pound bag of seed potatoes. thanks for the constant great information though!!
It may be because of where you live. I live in South America and here when you buy stuff like Garlic, Onion or Potatoes you have to be careful for it not to sprout. And seeds are super unreliable because they have no official expiration date so you may be buying seeds that are a decade old and you won't know until it's too late. I've personally got onions, potato, tomato (regular and cherry) and leek all regrown from scraps (in the potato case it actually started growing in the kitchen so we had to either plant it or throw it away).
Love your videos! Probably will never order from your website again. $7.55, including shipping for 1 head of garlic. I literally thought 1 on your website meant one package. So disappointed.
With all the soil amendments, how much does the garlic really cost you per year after you figure that in? I'm not calling you out, I'm just trying to find out because I'm planning for myself :-)
I’ve found with all the costs that go into gardening you won’t save any money, but you will get food that is way higher in minerals and water and can eat immediately fresh.
@@bkershaccount I find that people over work there gardens. For example, I don’t bother to Amed the soil in the fall. I just use leaves and let it break down for spring. Sure the initial cost for my raised beds was around 250$ but I also put a 150 dollar fence up to keep my dog out. In a few years it should hopefully pay itself back. I find that with every crop I grow I get a few dollars back (some more then others) know if you bring in the water bill, you could get some rain barrels which would pay back themselves within a year or 2. So it’s really up to you if you don’t bother doing some extra work and maybe not as good results use organic materials to compost and use leaves as mulch. If you don’t want to put in the extra work then you could buy all these fancy materials. I still fertilize but instead of going through multiple bags a season 1 bag last me 2 seasons. Now I only have a 50 square foot garden so it’s easy for me to maintain. At the end of the day it’s about how your doing it. Some people don’t fertilize at all. Some so it all the time.
I purchased 3 lbs of hardneck garlic for $60. I planted 96 plants to produce 94 bulbs. I reserved 24 bulbs for next season, so I got 70 bulbs of garlic to eat (85 cents/bulb). I've had high success rates similar to this each season. Next harvest then cuts that cost in half to 42 cents, third year 28 cents, fourth year 21 cents, etc etc I personally just use my own compost to amend the soil, but even with the soil amendments I can't imagine the costs increase drastically because garlic grows so close together (I plant 96 plants in 16 sq. feet) I'd imagine inputs each year in that amount of space would amount to at most $5. This would mean my 70 bulbs of garlic plus amendments would cost me $65, or 93 cents/bulb. By next harvest my total 140 bulbs of garlic would be $65 + $5 for 50 cents/bulb, third year 35 cents, fourth year 28 cents, etc. The cheapest culinary garlic I can find for the variety I grow is about 99 cents/bulb in a bulk purchase not including shipping, so cost savings with either approach are seen by the first year. Hope this helps!
Dependent Fanatic depends on your growing zone...here in Wyoming...zone 4...I plant in end of September ....and harvest 2nd week of July...that gives your an open bed for lettuce, radishes...chard..green beans even.
Also received my garlic, German Extra hardy (hardneck) & Inchelium Red (soft neck). I’m in Zones 9a-10b. My frost date is 12/10/20 - 1/10/20. So I would plant Nov 10, 2020 ? Correct. Will this frost rule apply to “both” garlic’s listed above?
Oh wow will have to check! Get some ordered! I love all his products, however here we plant early spring and harvest in fall, we get very large heads and do not trust our long hard winters!
Hmmmm. I already planted my garlic, but I put them about 6 inches down. Now I wonder if I should go back through and plant another set of cloves that are only 1.5 inches deep.
New subscriber here. I'm new at growing my own food AND I live in the tropics, Guam. And I want to go by way of organic growing. Would you be able to give me guidance in growing my garlic? We don't have seed garlic here either. I'll have to check business like Park Seed for seed garlic. Our season is Wet and Dry. From about July - December is our rainy season. Jan - June is our hot dry season.
I ordered garlic from you, but missed fall planting (because I'm perpetually behind on everything). Should I store the bulbs in the refrigerator until this fall? (Southeastern Michigan)
today is 9/21/2023, my garlic order just arrived! first frost date here is october 21st..... i need to getter done!!! we have lots of rain coming this weekend... oh dear....
Thank you so much for this video, just seeing it popped up helps me keep my gardening timelines 😆 Your channel has seriously been a key factor in improving my garden. Thank you so much!
We couldn't find seed garlic ANYWHERE! We've never planted a fall garden before, but are just attempting to start our little homestead. Not wanting to give up so early, we bought garlic from the grocery store. We just planted it this week. I guess we now wait to see what happens... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NRjhis-lIpw.html
