Yours is the only video I watched all night that actually told me how to plant in these coco mats, that came with a hanger I bought. So much confusion on these. Some were indicating I had to soak them in water before planting in them, and never got round to do any actual planting. You made it simple, and you know way more than me!

1:16 I found the key is to line the cocofiber liner inside with two layers of gardening plastic. You can poke a few holes for the drainage, and also if you were wanting to tuck a plant through liners. This has decreased the wasted watering, and improved the happiness of plants in them during summer.

Put foam at the very bottom of the pots. Helps hold water.

I did follow your advice last year and I bought a beautiful hanging basket and I sat it on a gazing ball base and filled it with beautiful trailing plants inside and in the sides. I added a thriller and a bunch of spillers! A tiny shrub a put in there lasted all throughout every season and I will use it this Spring!

I line my coconut baskets with plastic with three slits cut into the bottom. I’m in a really windy area and that helps retain moisture for me.

I love adding hanging baskets to my yard!!! Everything looks so beautiful with those colorful annuals. Another thing I like to do is add small solar powered lights in the pots, this way at night it lights up the baskets and creates a whimsical glow. I recommend trying it out it looks so gorgeous, and you get to appreciate the subtle color in the dark.

I've always worried about how much water runs through my hanging baskets, so here is what I do. I place a large bucket under the basket, run the water through (usually about 3 gallons) and take the bucket of water to my vegetable garden. I use it for my containers. I'm all about conserving water.

A trick I do is take plastic and put it in the bottom of the coco basket and poke holes for drainage. It really helps retain moisture and keeps the coco liner looking nice from year to year :)

@@dianneweie1484I put black garden plastic sheet cut to size and put in basket before putting in the coir liner. I poke holes at the bottom. You can also use black garbage bags. It keeps in the moisture and also helps to stop birds stealing bits of the liner. This works in very hot Central Australia

I love the colors of the Supertunia Picasso flowers. I got a huge hanging basket a few years ago that was gorgeous. But oh boy did it stink! I couldn't figure out where the smell was coming from at first but soon traced it to the basket. I had to move it to the back of my yard. It stunk of dirty gym socks, especially when wet or in humid weather. I haven't tried them again since but I might this year. Maybe the trick is not letting the foliage get wet when watering.

I use diapers on my baby, but they don't release the moisture, so why use them? Confused.

Diapers are designed to trapped liquids coming from outside to prevent babies having a wet feels. So i doubt it can hold up Moisture. 🤔🤔

It’s the crystals in the diaper that do the job. In Mexico some agronomist partly created this to add to soil for water retention.

Hi Laura I love your videos , I thought you may want to share how I line my containers with super results. I simply use artificial lawn secured with cable ties. It allows water to drain through as I has little holes in it. My baskets only needed watering about once a week and the results were brilliant, maybe you could do a video of it on your channel, it would help many people with watering problems. Thanks again and I love your children Benjamin is so 🥰 when he’s helping you 🧎🏼 xx

I add soil moist. In the soil before planting. It absorbs water then released water to roots as the soil dries.

Omg. You used such restraint, only planting 3 plants 😱. I thought you usually fill it out completely 🤣. This is how I would have done the basket 😉 budget friendly. I do like to try to stick to the Thriller, filler, spiller, it’s really tough sometimes finding compatible plants, looking forward to you next videos in this series of “hanging plants”. I had to replace my coco fiber this year for my basket and found one that had plastic just at the very bottom to help retain moisture. We'll see how it works!

Dear Laura, endless thanks for your vidios, as fore many they lift my spirit and give great ideas. When I plant in my hanging planters I use landscape fabric before I put the soil in. I live in Iceland and its not the sun (I wish) ☺ that drays up the soil but the wind, maby you can use that idea, also the water dont run as fast through the soil 😍 .

I tried landscape fabric last year on a few of my baskets. It held too much water and they were stunted because of soggy feet. I am going to skip the fabric this year.

Laura would love to see you use caladiums and/or dragon wing begonias. Something different than the super petunias you always use. Just a suggestion.

I was disappointed that all four of my caladiums died very quickly this spring when they were planted. I know I used composted grass for the soil, very rich brown but I guess they didn't like it. Maybe they got too wet? What was the pH off? Help? I have done caladiums in that same spot for years with no problems. Scratching my head this year.

I have found that if to take the center out of a new baby diaper with the beads to absorb the water, your plants can go much longer without watering. They retain a lot of moisture... And can in turn the roots can stay moist.

She does garden tours every month from April through November and occasionally she'll do one in December, January, Feb or March. They're usually between 30 and 60 minutes long and they're just terrific.

I’ve read that adding a small, open diaper at the base of the planter will help to retain moisture. I tried it one year with some cheapies and I *think* it helped 🤷‍♀️ Worth a shot.
