This was helpful! When I moved to my house, 2 hosta plants were already growing at the front of our house. We decided to just plant more of them to frame the front of the house since those 2 were so easy and low maintenance!
Hostas are very forgiving plants. I just pull young hostas from the mother plants and plant them to a shaded area of my garden. They come back year after year.
Thank you. I just planted some bulbs from Brecks and I kept thinking they looked wrong. I assumed bulbs meant the crown goes beneath the ground. I just replanted them the right way up.
This was so helpful. I just received my bare roots in the mail, but won't have time to plant them for another week. Should I do anything in particular for storing them while I wait to plant?
Thank you for your video. It was very helpful and I would never have known how to plant a hosta bulb without your help. I planted nine in the shade and I'm very happy. Thanks to you, again. Helene
@@cadenscooladventures9854 ours actually did, they all came up in cute, vibrant colors. They are much smaller than I expected, hoping they get bigger next year but they are like miniature plants. The slugs have been brutal this year though so very hole-y leaves :(
Its still a little cold here in idaho , I ordered some hosta roots and it said plant right away so I put them in little bio degradable pots til it warms up a little. I've never planted them so I hope I did the right thing. They are growing in the little pots they look good. Just thought id wait till there was no more frost at night to plant them. I didn't want to kill them.
Nice and informative video. I bought Hosta root from Lowe’s and put in a big planter with potting soil. It has been 3 weeks still I did not noticed any leaves. The only difference was I did not soaked the roots in water, please suggest what to do, thanks
How do you know if the root is dead? I ordered a super sak from Brecks that came at the end of March/beginning of April. I just now dug them out and they are all real dry but no crowns like the one you had
Thanks for the video ! I just bought some Blue Hostas & have them soaking now. Going to plant them in starter pots in the morning. WIll they do ok in full sunlight ? I am trying to figure out where to put them. I'm thinking around the base of my japanese maple tree.
Mine took maybe 2 weeks in the part of the garden with nice drip irrigation, but the ones that I planted way out on the fenceline took much longer - maybe a month! I thought they weren't going to come up at all (I..ahem...forgot to water them at all....)...but sure enough, they did sprout up (a month after planting)
I planted bare root Hostas at the end of July in a partial shady spot, and they did put on some leaves within a few weeks, but haven't grown any more since they are still only about 2 inches high. What can I do to get them to grow? I have fertilized them, but still nothing.
Hosta bare roots are best planted mid to late spring. They likely didn't grow much because it was too hot. They also take a few years to really fill out, so keep an eye on them, and make sure to give them plenty of water since they love cool damp soil.
