ive just gotten a dozen or so tractor tyres for a vegetable garden, i **was** kinda worried about the chemicals, then i realised we live 50M from a major highway and my partner smokes a pack of durreis every couple of days, ill just line mine with plastic sheets and add some drain holes so they dont collect the water. Ill let you know in 30 years if i died or not.

If you get food grade containers they don't have the same chemicals. When I grow in pots that's all I use.

@@brianduncan8276 my argument is that they are all food grade hence their detriment to the environment by not ‘breaking down’ quickly at all. If you ever come across a biodegradable plastic I’d recommend running for the hills.

I don't currently do it but like he did say people have done it for years. I would have to see an actual plant analysis done to be extremely worried about it myself. Water sitting in a tire saturated the whole year with the extra heat a tire causes would probably effect the water more than bucket. Is it ideal maybe not. But if it is bad then all these raised beds using old railroad ties and treated lumber are as bad or worse!

Definitely old railroad ties are hazardous creosol is a chemical that they used to use back in the day to treat lumber and has been recalled because of its harmful effects on the environment

No you shouldt use old railway sleepers for food crop. They are very bad. Soaked in creosote.

In the netherlands a study found that old tyre's, that have been lying outside for year have been "washed" by rain, WI d, sun and cold. Just don't use tyres that just came of a car.

We have an old tire that I was going to plant in but even just the thought of putting a food crop in there didn't sit well with me without knowing any research, just from use on the car and knowing it was rolling around. Haha. So instead I plan to just put some flowers and get it away from the side yard. Knowing this information has even solidified my decision more.

As a kid my dad grew so much stuff in tyres. I personally think they look shocking and are so bad for food crops. It was a do e thing years back now stick to good ground d mastic tubs ect safer and looks so much better and a dam sight healthier great vid buddy to let people no.

Smoking has been proven to be decidedly unhealthy. Nobody questions that. Many of the same toxins you claim are in car tires also exist in plastic containers yet you use them. Rubber car tires are a lot more stable than you make them out as being. Were it not so, they wouldn’t be utilized in playgrounds, gardens, etc. I challenge you to find ONE documented toxic tater related illness… I’m supposing you would have utilized that information in your otherwise excellent video. Oh! Let’s make sure everyone disposes of their rubber and urethane/ plastic garden hoses, too! Can’t be too careful!

I've made three large lorry tyre planters that I've been growing herbs and veg in for a couple of years. I cut off the side walls so there's not much tyre left. If they leach chemicals, the chemicals will go down into the ground and not sideways in the plants. I'm not too worried about it.

Has anyone thought that both tires as well as plastics are made from petroleum byproducts......one is just as bad as the other!

Yes they are both made with some of the same compounds but its how those compounds break down tears the issue. Many Plastics dont leach into the soil like tyres which by definition are designed to wear solid plastic is not designed to wear.

No matter what type of plastic the label claims to be, they all are at the mercy of mother nature and will break down at varying rates and as an environmental technician with over 17 years experience in landfilling and recycling I know this to be true. Plastics and rubber are the same in my eyes when considering growing food

Put a piece of solid plastic in the sun for a year and see how it's design holds up compared to a tired in the same spot for a year. I have food grade 5 gallon buckets outside, they shatter, the tires that are next to it are just as good as they were when I put them there

You are 100 percent right about this. But can't we first have some wooden cover to close the bottom of it. Then have some plastic or other material layer around, covering the inside of tyre before placing the soil . Finally, hang it

With the BILLIONS of tires in the world, I would be hard pressed to believe these chemicals arent already everywhere in our topsoil. Idk, I agree with this comment. I eould rather eat a rubber tire than the GMO and lab created food. SHOW ME THE TEST RESULTS. Otherwise its just your opinion and perception.

Not good for food crops but I think they make very cute planters for flowers and ornamental shrubs when cleaned and painted. Also if you use a liner in them the plants aren’t absorbing the toxins.

You mean a bag liner? Because toxic water can go wherever it wants. Many cities see tire planters as a blight, even if painted, so make sure you only do tire planters in your backyard and not anywhere people can see from the street

Cover the entire tire, both the insides and outsides with a plastic tarp, moisture barrier or seal it with something so the rubber won't touch the soil and the chemicals won't be able to leach into the soil. So this way you will be able to use the tire as a holding structure with a safe material touching the soil.

Thank you for the surprising information, but it does lead me to a question regarding other plant species. I have a HUGE number of succulents that are in my greenhouse. I loathe pesticides, however am in a mealybug metropolis and have settled on using either neem oil or an organic Bonide product for use as systemic pesticides (hence the reason for isolating them in my greenhouse...I know systemic pesticides are detrimental to pollenators, and succulents do produce blooms). With the toxicity of tires being as it is, doesn't it also affect the pollinators as well? I'm extremely conscious of their importance, as well as the dangers involved with anything that hits the plant roots, so I'd love your feedback.

You are kind. I just got three wide tires from the side of the road, thinking I could use them in my garden. But what you have said makes sense to me. It is bad to use pressure treated wood in gardens for the same reason. Poisons. Thank you so much! I’m in New Hampshire and we have had a pleasant spring this year. Yeah. Don’t grow food in tires that are too old with metal showing. The rubber keeps all of those chemicals contained. Don’t use tires for over 18 months.

Brick, untreated wood, stone, anything recycled like steel/aluminium tin cans. Even plastic pots are much safer. Although I'm trying to reduce my plastic. I no longer buy new. Just reuse what I find. Even some treated wood is better than tyres, but im all for using recycled wood these days, where possible.

I wonder if anybody has any actual numbers comparing tires to other material used for raised beds. I don't think they're going to be any worse than standing next to a busy roadway for a few minutes. Our blood is full of scary sounding chemicals

I removed all tyres from my allotment after finding out about this, but I'm very fond of driving past farms & seeing old tractor tyres filled with flowers. Etc. I suppose sensibly the answers should be no. 👍

i use tires for the first yr or two of growth on fruit trees and berry orchards then i remove them as the root systems are settled in.

Great advice , shocking to see that disgusting water !! I prefer good old dirt anyway , thas i grew up , my grandparents , my dad , we always used the ground . I was so happy with my tomatoes , but a couple of days i notice that the plants were kind of getting rotten , just found out that its Blithe !!!!!! Going to try to save them , i researched and we can make a mix baking soda and a few drop washing liquid in warm water , to kill the fungus , any idea if it really works ?? Cheers

Personally I would just stick to flowers. But plastic in a stable state doesn't leech as much as tyres. Hence we have plastic plant pots and although we sto call it Tarpaulin (tarp) it's now mostly made with plastic. Hope that helps.

Research and you will note that toxins and such will not make it to the fruits. The black you see is the nitrogen, phosphorus and such as these are attracted to carbon (what tires are made of) rust of which phosphorus is attracted.

Some people use them more out of necessity; simply because they nothing else to use. Others might do it for “hipster points” if you know you know. While some do it out completely out of ignorance. People really don't know what can kill them.
