With 2020 duck season just a few months away Drew and myself decided to plant Japanese millet at one of our duck spots with the hope of creating a food plot for duck hunting. We spent two weekends lowering the water on the impoundment, removing lily pads, working on our duck blind, and planting duck food (Japanese millet). It was hard work but we hope it'll be worth it and make for some great waterfowl hunting at this spot. Be sure to subscribe so you'll be able to keep up with this series and my other Virginia hunting adventures, hope you enjoy!

That s a great idea Thomas. I had two ponds together that had lots of.shallow flats. I give it to you for finding a food that will grow in a wet spot like you have. I used to say I hunted ducks year round. When the season wasn t in I was constantly asking, looking at maps , and scouting. Paddling in to check out a tip or a likely looking area. I got most of my new spots thanks to the beavers that were re introduced. Most people cussed and or trapped them if they dammed up a watershed. I wanted to feed em fertility pills LOL. I had some really pretty and prpductive new spots because of the furry engineers. 😊

The vegetation that’s in the pond provides an excellent source of food for ducks.....inveribates....crustations and such.......don’t get rid of it....also pond sago and water shield provides a good food source and habitat.....
@HokeOutdoors
@HokeOutdoors 4 года назад
I appreciate the info. We left much of the lilys (water shield?) and sago undisturbed. We don't seem to have any crustaceans in the pond unfortunately and while invertebrates are probably a big draw in the spring and late winter we need a food source for fall and early winter.
@DaddyDuck365
@DaddyDuck365 4 года назад
Virginia Outdoors Unlimited the crawfish and such....water shield is a plant that looks similar to lily pads, but produces a seed like lilly pads that ducks love to eat...all I was trying to say is don’t take your emergant vegetation out....it’s good food for ducks not only in the winter but also in the spring and summer for hens in egg production and young ducks.......

Great job! I’ve done this lots of times. It should work great for you! You might try getting a bio stimulant foliar spray like Perplus or Plant Power from Deltag. Spay after the millet comes up a few inches. It would also work great on the smartweed to give it a boost too.
@HokeOutdoors
@HokeOutdoors 4 года назад
I will definitely consider that.Thanks for the advice! Is there one grain that you like best for planting? Been reading about corn and rice and seems like they would be the preferences.
@SurvivingDuckSeason
@SurvivingDuckSeason 4 года назад
Virginia Outdoors Unlimited I really am a big fan of moist soil plants. If I can encourage natural growth that’s the best. There’s more food per acre in moist soil habitat than in an ag field. If I’m working with an area that I can’t do that then Japanese millet or golden millet would be my favorite. It’s easy and cheap. Corn isn’t the easiest to do if you’re not a farmer. We have so much commercial rice around us that there’s no benefit to plant it here.

Ive been doing the exact same thing. My lease had the shallows covered with water primrose ( a very invasive species that grows in a mat and nothing else can come up through it) i spent 2 months spraying it 5 times with 24 d herbicide. Now that all that it killed off ive gof the water dropped down and planted 50 lbs of jap millet in all the shallow areas on the 12 of this month. I just checked it today and its already over a foot tall in 2 weeks of planting. Im so excited. Good luck to you and your project and cant wait to see more!!

Here’s a suggestion it’s what we do in our swamps and marshes in Prince George Virginia we Plant winter wheat Field corn or soybeans On the banks but the winter wheat works the best because it will grow anywhere when we get it from her friend who is a farmer we put it in the back of the trucks every once in a while some seeds Will fall in the bed and it will grow in the back of the truck this is just a suggestion but it works pretty well because the wood ducks and mallards like it in the geese will eat it when it starts coming up but my suggestion would be to planted in the beginning of dove season to the end of early goose

Only area that’s lagging behind is the point, some areas are doing very well on it but others have only grown a little so far.
