I hope I'm not going into a bad season getting into cactus. It's mid-late autumn here and I have a few bare rooted cactus coming from eBay in the next week. I got a premium cactus and succulent potting mix. It was pretty expensive but I got heaps. I got some pots as well. I'm getting 2 Chamacereus and a mirabilis.
Thats fantastic you have two Chamacereus and a mirabalis coming in the mail from eBay, its so exciting to look forward to new plants in the mail, your new cacti will be perfect coming into the winter if you keep them dry and they will overwinter well in preparation for the following Spring, thanks so much Brendan for your wonderful comments and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful Saturday and weekend XXXX
Mealy bugs can be a nightmare. I was gifted a beautiful peanut cactus a few years ago. I will be checking it for pests. I never thought about the fact that they can hide in the tight cluster.
Mealy bugs really are 'beasties' and can cause so much damage to our beloved plants, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a fantastic new week XXXX

Hi Lynn, my beautiful peanut cactus also got mealybugs. I made a rookie mistake, i thought it needed water and I drowned the poor baby. Anyway, I took off the few remaining pieces but had to cut off the ends as the rot was startong. I treated them for mealybugs and I'm letting the callous over. Will they root as I cut the ends off? I'm so upset as it was gorgeous and flowing beautifully over the pot
So sorry to hear about your Peanut cactus also getting Mealies, The good news is that the cuttings will still root even though the ends have been cut off because they will send out roots from the areoles ( the tiny pads where spines come from ) along the stems of the cuttings, and will even root if placed on their sides too, I have rooted Peanut cacti cuttings this way in the past and they root well, once they have callused you can place some directly into the soil and also lay a few of them on their sides but in contact with the soil and lightly spray mist them with water and they should root and send out new shoots from the cut parts, good luck with rooting your cuttings and I bet your cactus will be re blooming again for you in the future
Thats brilliant news Alisha :-D Thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and sending you lots of love and PLANT POWER from across the Emerald Isle for a sunny Sunday today XXXXX
Hey Thanks for the video. It was a HUGE peanut cactus. I had it for years and it was great. But it died when off to school. Now it is the one that I have wanted to replace and I can not keep them going. So when you say you do not water during winter... really? not at all? Wont they dry to a crisp in the three months? When do you know to stop watering? When do you know to start again? I would still love to get one of these going. But I dont want to kill them off again. They end up getting mushy and then like some water balloon falling apart.
So sorry to hear you lost your peanut cactus, I hope you can replace it again. Yes I stop watering this plant completely from now until late March, its amazing how they do not dry out in all the months, but stay pretty much the same, they will shrink a bit but this is normal because they use up their water stores in their plant bodies, its much better to under rather than over water and use a very well draining gritty soil that dries out fast especially for cacti :-D here is a link to my website and if you go onto the growing tips section there are lots of tips on there :-D I hope it helps you and good luck : www.desertplantsofavalon.com thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and sending you an abundance of love and happiness and PLANT POWER from across the Emerald Isle for a wonderful weekend XXXXX
@@desertplantsofavalon Thanks! Yes it was actually quite the sad event. All my cactus come from a lovely woman who used to walk around the desert and pick up little pieces and grown them. I have lots of cactus from her. She has long passed yet a little over her remains in my collection. So, this was the one I lost of hers. I would LOVE get a slip of the originals but not possible. So I will try again to complete the collection as I can. Partially because they are great little plants and partially to complete the memory of Franzie.
Hi Shawna :-D yes a wide shallow pot is best to repot these types of cacti, as they are clumping growing cacti and have only shallow root systems, thanks so much for watching and have a wonderful weekend XXXX
Hi gorgeous girl, LOVE the rescue vids such great teaching. Did I ever mention that though I've always had plants I only started with cacti after watching your channel. So you are responsible for brand new magic in my life, thank you! Just heard some of Hans music, so beautiful. A big smile to you both from 🌺Tish. ps, fantastic to see your first cactus being saved.
WOW thats FANTASTIC that you only started to collect cacti after watching my channel , thats so wonderful Tish :-D that makes me so happy to read this :-D and thats fantastic news that you have heard Hans music, Hans is so talented and is an incredible Musician :-D thanks so much so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and Hans and I are sending you an abundance of love and happiness and PLANT POWER from across the Emerald Isle for a fantastic week ahead XXXX
I couldn't remember if I'd told you that but yes, for some reason I was nervous of cactus and had got the idea in my head that they were too 'specialist' for me. Your channel and your infectious enthusiasm plus all the fantastic info got me over that 😄.Hans's channel and music also wonderful. You are such a talented pair! Huge smile, Tish.
Hey Lynn hi Hans ! I think I have the orange and the white peanut variety .... New to my house .... They are being stubborn about rooting ! Last night I saw slugs eating my suculents , had to put cinnamon all over the balcony , at least no more ants or slugs !
Oh No so sorry to hear about the slugs, slugs are a pain here too and cinnamon is a great deterrent to use and natural too and does not harm the slugs or ants :-D thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and sending you an abundance of love and happiness and heaps of PLANT POWER from the Emerald Isle for a fantastic day XXXX
I love peanut cactus, ive got some of the purple blooming variety i am going to plant very soon, thankfully i watched this video as i was treating the cuttings how i treated my bridgesii by letting it dry for a long time. Ill be planting them this afternoon!
Greetings from India. Love all your videos. Yes, I have orange 🌺 peanut cactus. I have no knowledge why some part of my peanut cactus dried out completely like three months ago. Out of horror I panicked and splash them with baking soda on the rest of the fleshy ones. It seem quite fine now. Hope it boom for me this year. Hehe, I am just beginning to learn gardening especially cacti and succulent.
thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and sending you an abundance of love and happiness and heaps of PLANT POWER from the Emerald Isle to India for a fantastic day XXXX
How do you know which end of the propagation to put in the soil? I was given a propagation - fat on one end, thin on another, but does it matter which end goes in the soil? Maybe the fat end to keep it from toppling over?

Hi Lyn the Repotting of your Cactus video was really interesting, if everything goes well it will look better than the original. Anyhow you have inspired me, at the moment my wife is out in Malaysia and she has seen a big pile of unwanted Cactus that her son has put put into the garden and they are growing well, also she went to the local market and they had hundreds of different types for sale at less than £2 each, anyhow following your videos I have explained to her how to take cuttings (they should dry out on the flight home) and I will attempt to repot them, in your homemade soil mix nothing ventured nothing gained. Best wishes from Surrey . Peter
Hi Peter :-D so happy you loved the repotting video :-D thats wonderful news that I have inspired you, thats so exciting your wife has taken cuttings of cacti and you will be able to plant them when you wife gets home I bet you are so looking forward to seeing the cuttings :-D thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and sending you an abundance of love and happiness and heaps of PLANT POWER from the Emerald Isle to Surrey for a fantastic day XXXX

Lyn, did you ever consider laying them out and spraying them with a uniform coating of isopropyl alcohol rather than using the small brush? Maybe do it 2 or 3 times over the course of a week?
Thanks so much, I have them all divided into little pots now, and many coming into bud, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a fantastic Friday XXXX

Hi , my peanut cactuses started showing signs of rotting and stuff and I wanna repot them ,just wanted to know is it OK to put them in a wet soil?or do I have to avoid watering them for a couple of days after repotting them?
Hi Andishe, so sorry to hear about your Peanut cacti, its best to use a dry soil as moist soil can cause further rot, pot you cactus up into totally dry soil and leave dry for at least 2 weeks, Good luck with your Peanut cactus, and thanks so much for watching, and have a wonderful plant powered Wednesday XXXX
@@desertplantsofavalon thank you so much for replying 💙❤. I did what you said and basically I tried to pack soil around it but cause of the dryness of the soil , the cactus keeps coming out of the soil and I'm not really sure what to do.
@@andishesarmad5637 Hi Andishe, I think the best thing to do is very lightly spray the soil with water, so that the soil is only slightly moist instead of wet, this should help the soil to stay onto the cactus, it should still be ok as long as the soil is only slightly moist and not wet, I sometimes press the cactus onto the soil and then very lightly mist the top of the soil with water to help press the cactus down into the soil, if the soil is only slightly moist and dries out within a day or two it will be ok, you could also use grit to cover the top of the soil as this may help to give the cactus more support for staying in the soil too, I hope this helps, and good luck with your Cactus XXXX

I love this view of planting the little shared Peanuts - but I needed to know how often to spray or water them…. You said a quick blurb at the end but I need specifics please!! A friend shared 5 peanuts and my pot it’s about the same size as yours😬 now I feel like they need friends 😃 I live in Northern California- I have some inside at a window and the pot outside on a porch. Thank you for your enthusiasm & help🌵
Hi Julie :-D thats wonderful that you have got 5 peanut cuttings, its best to keep the very top of the soil just lightly moist until they have taken root and show signs of new growth from the top, once they have taken root and started to grow you can water them lightly every time the soil has dried out in the pot, from late Fall and Winter its best to keep them completely dry until the following Spring, these Cacti can take both full sun and light shade too, good luck with your Peanuts and thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER to Northern California for a fantastic Friday XXXX
thanks so much Stefan for your wonderful comment and for watching and sending you an abundance of love and happiness and heaps of PLANT POWER from the Emerald Isle for a fantastic day XXXX
Yes thats right because if you water plants in direct sun the soil can overheat and the plants can also burn especially if they are under glass as the glass can act like a magnifying glass and can burn the body of the plant, its best to water early morning or late evening :-D XXXX
Ann Musselman Lyn has been wrangling cacti for years, I've been at it also for a while as well after a while you just learn how to deal with them. Thanks for your kind words as well😄
