We are starting our fall planting, but we HAVE NO SEEDS!!! Samantha and Sarah head out to Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Company in Mansfield, MO to pick up organic seeds. Then, we tromp through the tall grass and weeds to find our overgrown raised bed gardens...which need a complete overhaul before planting. Amazingly, we get 2 organic fall gardens planted with broccoli and cauliflower!

Hey Kevin and Sarah, glad to see you to putting in a fall garden this year. I hope to finish clearing the old neglected East garden plot here on the old Home Place today. I got all the Chinese privet and Hack Berry trees cut back to just their trunks now. Today I will take down the trunks , cut it up and move it all to the burn pile. Then comes the really fun work, digging out the stumps, chopping them out with an axe and a hatchet. If I get that far today, I will bring in my new rear tine tiller and get the ground torn up. I will still have to get out all the roots from all the native species that were growing in it over the past 10 years. With some luck, I will have it ready to plant out early next week. I have my transplants started in pots, they are coming up now. So time to grab my old gloves and head back out, Thanks for the video. Instead of doing away with the raised beds later, I would densely plant perennial herbs and flowers there and make it easy on yourself. Pollinators are good for the garden!!!

Sarah, Go to Bumbie bee junction & see their raised beds (Outstanding) no bending over to start & much better harvesting. You folks could save yourself a lot of work. You should see how they prep their soil in the spring for their main gardens!

Exciting to look forward to the fall crops!! We are finishing up summer produce from the trees and bushes mostly, but it has gone well. Luckily not all of the orchard produces every year. Soon we, too, start planting for the fall!!

I like Baker Creek too. The little photos they send along with my order are funny. One was big bearded dude in the back of an old pick up truck wearing daisy dukes. They seem like good people.

Oh man! I did not expect the time I needed to process all that is harvested! The tomatoes just keep coming! And the cucumbers! And yes I'm complaining but with a big smile on my face. I'm trying hard to get the fall planting area set but the sun sets when the sun sets! I also work a full time job. Still... I love it. I love my backyard garden and the great results. Thank u for the baker creek trip. I order a lot of their seeds.

Perhaps next year, if this late planting works out, you can tarp the beds so they stay clean/sprout out the weed seeds so they die off then when you’re ready in the late summer you can plant at will?

I would have thought the tomatoes on my balcony would be done by now so I could plant spring onions for my husband (he loves them) but after we harvested the majority they just started to bloom again, as well as the small tomatoes that have been dormant for weeks have also started to grow! 😂 never had luck with cruciferous vegetables apart from feeding caterpillars. Oh well, if they‘re not feeding us, they might feed those. 😊

Wondering how your fall plants are doing. My beans are doing well. Planted another small batch of spinach and some carrots 6 days ago. The cool weather has helped! They are up! So excited to see what happens! Have a blessed day.

Is there a reason that so many homesteading women wear hats all of the time? I can understand wearing them outside but I wonder why inside? Thanks again, for all you give to your viewers. I could use some tips on germinating broccoli. As one of the few veggies my finicky spouse will eat, it's a staple in our house. But I've always had terrible luck with germination.

Personally I like raised beds for HOA type of yards but homes with half an acre and larger I think traditional in the ground gardens are better.

My preschool class is studying how things are grown. Today we watched this video. They LOVED it! Especially when the rooster crowed. We will definitely be watching more in the future! If you don't like the way she drives, Stay off of the sidewalks look out! I would lose my mind in that seedstore!I couldn't leave!!! One of each! Baker Creek is my favorite Seed Company and then Seed Savers Exchange. Check out the Boothby's Blonde cucumbers, they are thin skinned and perfect for sweet pickles or any pickles! Mexico midget cherry tomatoes you got to get those! And Aunt Ruby's German green tomatoes wonderful!

What a beautiful place Baker creek is. You guys are so lucky to live near such a great resource. I would go crazy in there with the seed buying! How do you manage the kid stuff and the home stuff. I made a promise to myself not to be in the garden all day every day and spend the summer doing more kid activities. It has been tough with the swimming lessons, dance, travel...to keep up with the garden.

Raised beds dry out quick here for late season planting. I just use normal garden. If it is trying to come late, pvc hoops and plastic. Also it seems the fire ants here love raised beds

I planted in ground last year but I didn’t have time to weed it and looked horrible. This year I made 4 raised beds, in one I planted 4 or 5 rows of corn. The corn grow no taller than 2 feet. I’m going to tear it out and try planting some kale. And see how it goes

Baker Creek is so rustic and inviting! I'm hoping to visit Johnny Selected Seeds in Maine. We have traditional ground level gardens at the farm. The main garden was established by my late father-in law. I discovered one of my late mother-in-law's kitchen gardens It was hidden, next to the tractor shed , completely grassed over, except for a clump of Tiger Lilies. So my brother-in law plowed it up, once again... I used the FRENCH INTENSIVE method and it is abundant! However, we need to establish raised beds at our new house in the woods. Small sunny space. What worked best for you in your raised beds? I like the cattle fence arbor design and will use chicken solar electric fencing to keep out the critters... Thanks! Diane

No soil amendments for those beds? Compost? It would seem that whatever was used up by the weeds you pulled would need to be replaced.

i am twenty five years older than you sara, and it makes me soooo happy to see you sharing all you do with the families of the world. I, to, still use my old tiller, almost older than me, lol,,,we are in north mo. and we are praying that we get this rain that is suppose to be coming, two days of it, the farmers have lost their corn, and many selling their cattle. Your raised bed are now looking amazing, and i hope that you get a giant head on each of your plants.
