We put in a 12 hour day to get our garden planted before the rains come again! We are planting corn, squash, potatoes, black eyed peas, green beans, tomatoes, comfrey, peppers, cucumbers, rhubarb, and more asparagus! Do we have enough space? Do we get it all done?

You have plenty of room :o) My parents bought our farm in 1961 when it was roughly 100 yrs old. Mom took her cues from what previous owners had planted and where. Any thing that would spread -- rhubarb, asparagus, comfrey, ramps, garlic, etc -- were grown against the south side foundations of the house and out buildings. We found a huge asparagus bed behind a garage. Our rhubarb grew out the back door to the cooler.. We thought we had these pretty little sunflowers growing next to the barn to find out later they were Jerusalem artichokes. By planting them that way, they did not over take our regular garden bed. Now with your garden -- you could put raised beds along the inside of your fence line for strawberries, herbs, and crops you can grow on a trellis (beans, cucumbers, etc). The slope you climb could be terraced with raised boxes for carrots, radishes, lettuce, spinach, etc -- anything that does not grow high and could be shielded from the hungry deer by a type of screen door hinged onto the box. You learn from your first few gardens -- what to grow and how much. I will never forget how I hit the ground running after we moved here and planted 35 tomato plants -- to have tomatoes coming out my eyes lololol I froze enough spaghetti sauce to sink a battle ship lololol And that is after I invited my neighbors to pick what they wanted. Good gardens take years and evolve over time.

Everything looking so far. I hope you all can keep up with all the grass and weeds that will start growing in your Huge garden. Since this is your first homestead garden (huge), you will he spending a lot of time weeding, etc. without mulch or some type of covering. I think Art today finally is realizing the intense amount of work starting a homestead and then keeping it up. The look on his face when Bri said she wanted raised beds says a ton. First year homesteaders think they have to have it all right now and that's why many get burnt out. Slow down Art and Bri, taking care of what you have now is about all you will be able to manage. Come two months from now, dont be dismayed when your garden is not picture perfect like some other YT channels. Art, remember many of your viewers love the ride but are not getting their hands dirty watching you and then forgetting you have to go to a full time job. Get to your place where you can manage and enjoy your family and journey. All good things take time. You are not at a competition. Take care my friend.

I love how you get your kids involved in the garden. Growing up, I remember being in the garden with my great grandma ALL the time and I learned so much from her. I try to get my niece and nephew into gardening, but they don’t seem to like the heat too much!

We always had two gardens growing up. My parents planted what needed daily harvesting near the house like squash and cucumbers. And potatoes, corn and such in a garden farther from the house.

We learned many years ago that it's okay to plant your plants closer together... We lived in a very small house with a very small yard years ago so we learned how to do 4X4 gardens. We had the best harvests by planting everything about 4 to 6 inches apart gave us room for more plants and less weeding because there was no room for the weeds to grow. Now we have a VERY large yard with BAD soil so we plant in straw bails and still plant everything close together and we find that the plants do much better close together than far apart... The only plants we grow farther apart is like our watermelon and viney plants that spread out and those we plant in containers because of our bad soil and me being handicapped I can't bend over or crawl on the ground like I use to... So we have our gardens about 30 inches off the ground... For the last two years we've just double stacked the straw bails and planted in the top one... BUT I do mess getting out and plant big gardens like we did when I was a kid. We had a couple gardens they where both 200ft.X200ft. it was a lot of work but I loved growing things!!!! We started our garden last year and I realized I had so much more room I could have utilized. I planted everything the distance that the seed packs said but it seemed like I could have planted things so much closer together which I am going to try this year. It's all about trial and error and what works best for your garden space. Good luck!!

We put our rocks in piles and then moved them out later, some of them years later. I still have a couple large pyramids in the 11 year old orchard. I've got to replant sweet corn today. The first planting came up spotty, maybe some seeds rotted in all the rain, five inches over the last weekend and four inches before.

Oh boy, are you going to have your hands full taking care of all that food. My sister and I garden in the front yard in raised beds (not nearly the space you have), and we can get ourselves worn out. But, you guys are young and strong, so it should all be good. It's been a big help to us to use hay spread around our plants for weed suppression and to conserve water. And this year we are trying to get some drip irrigation put in some beds. An older gentleman gave us this info and it has paid off: plant basil, marigolds, and garlic near tomatoes for pest control. The garlic doesn't shine in the summer, but it seems to do it's job. Thank you for sharing your journey will all of us. I learn new things all the time (and smile a lot too). ---Brenda

Always pinch off all but the top 2 branches on your tomato plants. That keeps them from developing on top before they've really had a chance to develop a good root system below. Trimming all but the top 2 branches assures that the energy that the plant has is diverted to the root structure. In 2 weeks or 3 the branches will redevelop, and you can rest assured that there is a fine viable root structure below to support the growth.ALSOIf you think your going to have a wet spring, plant in the normal way, as you did. IF HOWEVER, you think its likely to be dry, lay the trimmed branch all the way in the ground up to the 2 branches you left putting the rest of the trunk underground. That trunk will sprout A BUNCH of new roots that will help that plant to find what water there is in a dry season.

I love my garden! I noticed that you may be overthinking, and subsequently overworking. Don't worry too much about getting those potatoes 12 inches apart. They will do just fine at 8 or 14 inches. All that digging by hand! Are you averse to using a tiller? So much extra work! Also, the tomatoes didn't need to be replanted. They would have done fine. Just bury the next ones deeper. I usually leave about the top 3 leaf pairs above the soil. I'm so happy for you to be doing your first homestead garden! Good luck!

great garden. You can save on space by planting the plants closer. I have planted tomato plants as close as 8 in or in a double row, they seem to hold each other up that way. Also with beans. Potatoes can also be planted close, and you don't need to go that deep, you can pull the soil up on them after they start growing. Root crops like loose soil. You are doing fine, hope this helps. PS: some garden crops take up a lot of room, like corn, I don't grow it and its available locally in summer cheap. We normally buy enough to can and freeze.

I find volunteer rhubarb grows a lot quicker than planted, we have a volunteer one and leave it there because it makes really good pie, and crisp, we also give it to some of our neighbours and relatives.

You can plant your cucumbers on your fence and let them climb on it instead of taking up space in the garden. That is what we do just an idea for yall

The rule of thumb for planting seeds, would be to plant them 3 times their with when laying flat. So if a cucumber seed is one to two millimetres thick, then 3 to 6... but each one differs....

A flame weeder will quickly knock down anything growing in the wrong place. Almost all of My neighbors bought one after borrowing mine. I recommend using it while it's raining. The water on the leaves intensifies the coverage. Urban Farmer Curtis Stone has some great videos on the use.

I absolutly love the freedom the kids have. Living in the city I feel like Im always watching my kids like a hawk. Your garden is so beautiful!!! Our total back yard would fit in your garden hahaha. I look forward to seeing the garden this year. We are excited to grow some Black Dakota Popping corn this year. Have you ever tried planting things using the Square Foot gardening methods? It might help you save space plus if you use companion planting you could fit sooo many more plants. Thats what we have to do here.

MIgardener has great ideas on compact planting but that doesn't work for potatoes...also homestead moma has cost effective trellis ideas...it really is hard when your just starting to know how much gardening you need/want...you got a lot done in one day...I've been doing a little here and there since our last frost here in Arkansas...I put my potatoes & tomatoes in a couple weeks ago...

Your family and you are doing so awesome! I wanted to let you know that I have tried and do mix my veges up and by that I mean, for example when the tomatoes get taller, plant either peppers, bush beans, anything that is a lower growing plant under the taller ones. It also makes your tomatoes taste better in my opinion if you plant basil with them. This way of planting really helps with less watering and weeding. I use cardboard and leaves for helping even more on mulching. I have to give credit though over to CaliKim and her channel, I learned the most from her. This whole homesteading stuff though so far from Justin Rhodes. Will be subscribing to your channel. Your garden and your family is beautiful!

Beautiful garden. I wrote measurements on my garden hoe. It works quite nicely. Just in case the kids take off with your ruler 🙌🏻 I have done raised beds and intensive planting and now that we can dig in the ground we have a big ol garden that is 78x153 ft!!! I love it and it's so much easier to plant than raised beds. Nothing wrong with row gardening. For some it just works better. We till between our rows. It will also be way easier in the fall when we just till it up, plant a cover crop and let her rest until spring. You will love Cherokee Purple, they have been a favorite for many years. If you ever get a chance try Indigo Apple, they get purple shoulders and turn orange. Gorgeous! If mine do well I will send you some seed for 2018. Love seeing the kids out there. Perfection.

Have you heard of the Three Sisters companion planting method: planting sweetcorn, beans, and squash together? Maybe that could help to maximize your space.

We have. However, that method often doesn't work well with sweet corn. We are hoping to do a bit of the 3 sisters in our dent corn area.

The BEST snacking/salad tomatoes we have ever had are called Sun sugars...we don't even plant any other cherry type tomatoes anymore, because no one really likes any others!

Hey guys, there is a method of setting up your garden, called raise bed, so that your bed don not get trampled down, mulch them with hay, straw to suppress weeds. When you plant plants in the beds, go in row spacing by in row spacing. A author named Mel bartholomew, set up a system called square foot gardening. He lists what spacing each type of plantings...This might give you folks the volume of food that you need.

We realize that more intensive gardening like square foot or raised beds would give us more space. However, we don't have the time/money this year to invest in that type of garden. We are happy to just get a garden in! Thanks for the ideas.

just a little advice from an old timer, when cutting potato's to plant, cut all the big spider type eyes off, you only want eyes with 1 sprout, them big mass spider eyes grow nothing but huge tops and nothing more, even cut them off all small seed potato's,, the don't grow any potato's at all, leave them to dry 2 to 3 days until all cut are dried up

Check out Ruth Stout's method of planting potatoes. She put whole potatoes on top of the ground and put straw over them and they grew. She was awesome. Love your videos!~

Bri, with some research you cld build them yourself wo Arts help teaching. That way he can do other projects. But you already know that. The garden is AMAZING! I cant wait to see it harvesting!
