What a great idea to split and plant out the perennials. I love seeing plants growing out of walls. My sister-in-law has been doing this with Mexican Fleabane and it looks really pretty.
Great video, it was the bees knees. We have eight containers of alpine flowers which are great to have for spring and early summer. Once they are finished flowering we deadhead them and leave the containers against a wall to protect them from the winter rains.

I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one still planting things! I never give consideration to low growing, spreading plants. I should do. There are always gaps to fill. You aren't a million miles away from me. Do you have a favourite nursery or garden centre that you go to for your plants or do you mail order most of them? I have a Alstroemeria (Peruvian lily). I was about to put it into my border but the post lady said I would be better with it in a pot to contain it. Have you ever planted one of these in a border? If so, was it invasive to the point of annoying?
Hi Sue, I do order a lot on line (only because I can't get plugs or bare roots at the garden centres) but if I want to visit a garden centre, then my favourite is Smiths in Denham but I also like Rowans in Chalfont St Giles but it is a little for £££. I find Smiths have the best and most varied selection. I once grew Alstromeria (in our previous house) but it wasn't my favourite colour so I abandoned it. I didn't find it at all invasive. 😊
Loved this video Annette! You inspired me to look at little ground cover type plants for containers. I'm already thinking about what to plant in my new greenhouse this fall/winter. I'm so glad Anne. They are such useful plants and easily overlooked for something with more impact but I feel all gardens need these little hard working plants.
Love your videos Annette. Down here is NZ I am planting for spring displays with ideas from your tablescape. I am a container gardener due to space. Have you ever grown lavender in a container? I don’t have much success - any advice on soil and care? 🌷
Thanks so much Marie. Yes, I have lavender in a container currently. I mixed 50/50 with horticultural grit and compost so that it drains really well. I also have the pot raised on feet so that it drains properly. I have found that over the years, we need to feed the lavender because, I guess due to the lack of compost, the plants don't perform as well in future years and just produce less flowers so I feed them to improve the blooms. Hope this helps. 😊

Hi Marie, the pot size is relevant to your plant size. I always use larger pots because they are easier to keep moist - and lavender likes water - just well drained soil too. Seaweed feed is good in spring but when you want flowers, switch to something with a more even ratio of ingredients. Tomato feed would be good.😊
Gosh, yes. We mulch every autumn and spring and each time we plant a large area. We use well-rotted farmyard manure. We've found this works really well to help improve the structure of our heavy clay soil. It takes a year or 2 to see the results but it's totally worth it.
Yes, it's used here too. I prefer manure because it breaks down faster and my aim is to improve the soil structure quickly, in addition to the other benefits of mulching. 😊
