This time of year we start thinking about Thanksgiving. Ok, maybe not exactly, but we do bring our pasture raised Thanksgiving turkeys onto the farm now to be finished by the holiday weekend. Problem is, we have no greens in our pasture for them to munch on. Can we get it green by this Fall?

Look if you can find a tow behind aerator, when I cover cropped my orchard here in Canada I'd run it over the stubble, it made entry holes for seeds. I had heavy soil here too. Always 🍒 time. In AZ it's the earthworms that dig the holes. My neighbor's now ask why when it rains I get no runoff. I tell them when you ask a gardener in AZ how much rain they got, the important answer is " all of it" our well water is so saline that we need rains to flush it down and away. My only run-off is where the desert landscaping is in front yard, at back of residence, and around the shop, and most of that gets piped into a 3K gallon catchment tank underground, I'm gone in the summer or I'd catch my roof water for watering, now in the back it goes for groundwater, I'm trying to give back, not just take.
@EdgeofNowhereFarm
@EdgeofNowhereFarm Месяц назад
We do need to figure something out for planting these pastures and I like the idea of an aerator. Anything that can do double duty is always a plus!
@johac7637

@@EdgeofNowhereFarm I'll drop by the farm and see if it's outback with some other stuff, they pulled all the fruit trees out, now wine grapes. It was a older JD that was used behind ride-on mowers, but back then they had lots of attachments, took the mower, attachments to Oregon, not the aerator, had a sandy pasture there. It was a roller with spikes, could add water for penetration, it was perfect, it would flatten, crimp and disturb, I'd broadcast like you do then then roll, and if needed raise the mow deck and clip. I started the cover cropping in 06, as I had high PH soil, and a gal I met while I worked on Hawaii Island consulting for the Papaya, Mac Nut, Coffee growers told me, just add bio mass. I had never heard of Regenerative farming, but looking back my parents did it in our gardens every winter, veggies come off, broadbeans, peas, buckwheat, flax went in, then our goat herd went out in March to trim it, Mom said that's how her Dad grew their market garden in Romania, so I've just done it, except the years we raised horses. But those hay burnets just eat poop, and start over.

@@EdgeofNowhereFarm we had 8 tenths the last rain, nothing ran to the street, and I'm sloped 3' in the 200' foot depth of the lot, all except the drive from the back to, where it still pools, so I got and kept 8 tenths I kept all of it, not sent to the wash to go to who knows where. Think in those terms, people ask you about a pond, unless your raising frogs, why ? Right, keep it in your orchards, erosion is not what we want, we want earthworm the drill the drain holes, like going out at night collecting fishing worms on the schoolyard in Western Oregon, they are our best friends. Food for thought.

Question(s) on wood chips. You all have turned me on to chipdrop and I just got my first pile! Do you notice the chips composting naturally over time? In other words if I just leave the pile, will the wood compost itself? Second, I have noticed after a few weeks the interior wood in the pile is moldy. Now I know that is good for breaking the wood chips down, but I am afraid of introducing mold to my plants! Are my fears unfounded? Maybe third question, can I reserve a turkey!?!
@EdgeofNowhereFarm
@EdgeofNowhereFarm Месяц назад
Congrats on those chips! We have a static pile in the back of the farm that has been there for about 4 years now. When we scoop chips from the bottom they are completely dry and not broken down at all, so if you want them to compost down you'll need to water them regularly. The only issue with the mold would be inhaling it as it won't harm your gardens. If it's windy or we're moving large amounts we usually wear a mask. I'm not sure we have any of the turkeys left, but you can email us and we can send you the details and put you on the waiting list. 😉

The baby turkeys are so freaking cute.. I love this video because we see these lil guys will have a TOTAL ORGANIC LIFESPAN.. I worked 19 years in the grocery business, and I don't care what they stamp ORGANIC.. I don't believe any of it.. because the Perdue plants are here in GA.. and NOTHING in those plants ever see the light of day.. everything leaves in the same trucks?? And also Coca Cola is based here, every kid in GA has toured the plants.. but like Pepsi, they each have Desani and Aquafina spring water??? But they are loaded on trucks along side the Coke and Pepsi products??? Do you really think they have a NATURAL SPRING, hidden inside a plant in down Atlanta??? or what's the alternative... THEY LIE TO CONSUMERS??? Of course not, companies as big as coke can't just lie?? 😂😂😂😂😂

@EdgeofNowhereFarm
@EdgeofNowhereFarm Месяц назад
That may be just a little too cold for them to be planted in-ground, but you can definitely grow them in pots and bring them in on freezing nights. I would suggest the Chicago Hardy as it's the most cold tolerant from what I understand.

Besides mulching, are you using the sorghum for any other purposes, like human or animal feed? And I wonder re growing hemp for chop n drop... would it also make good coop bedding for chickens, or would it have to be further processed?
@EdgeofNowhereFarm
@EdgeofNowhereFarm 29 дней назад
The sorghum is primarily for the turkey pasture (as feed for the Thanksgiving turkeys that we raise) and used for chop/drop. The one you saw us trimming back is a volunteer from an area we grew it in a few years ago and that's just a volunteer that has come up on it's own. As for hemp (Sunn Hemp specifically), we do have plans to include that in our rotation on this same pasture next Spring....assuming the sorghum does well being planted this late! I'm not sure on the bedding. The pine shavings serve 2 purposes, they do a great job of absorbing moisture and they help with the smell.

Where did the turkey poults come from? I have used Murray McMurray in the past and their birds are good but was wondering who you are ordering from.
@EdgeofNowhereFarm
@EdgeofNowhereFarm 29 дней назад
These came from Hoover's Hatchery and we have used Cackle Hatcher in the past. I don't know this for a fact, but I think they all come from a centralized hatchery.

@EdgeofNowhereFarm Месяц назад
We don't really do any dirt prep, but we did put down some goat manure in the Spring which should help with nutrition. We'll be chancing that up again next year to add Sunn Hemp to help with chop and drop as well as fixing nitrogen. I'll link to the one we use for you here; amzn.to/3Mmxgzj

Lori, you look very hot and bothered. Yes. Some rules you must strictly adhere to, like never going for that " just one more run" down the ski slopes. It always leads to no good. - for me.
