One thing is for sure - you are persistent! Love that part of your personality AND it's partners, positivity and joy. Wouldn't be much good without the other two AND you sure encourage me to keep going with the partners. I needed that - thanks.

This was interesting to watch. I've never seen anyone do the chicken wire around the boxes - you worked so hard to prepare those, and deserved a huge harvest! Isn't it puzzling how some people can get such huge potato harvests and some don't? I have one 14-gal tub of potatoes growing that I planted in mid-Jan from store-bought that had grown eyes, and I turned into10 chits and planted thinking they wouldn't do anything. They grew green tops like crazy, which I've hilled twice. We'll see how they do... I hope your new plantings grow in great abundance!

Hi Shari, it is crazy how different things grow better in different areas. I can’t wait to see how your potatoes turn out in your 14 gallon tub. It sounds like they’re off to a very good start! Blessings on a great harvest! 😁

I just watched a guy that grew potatoes in black trash bags and he planted 4 per bag and had them at 2 different levels like a X top left & bottom right at the lowest level about 8 inches down then bottom left & top right just 2 inches from the top.

Wow! It is incredible how many different ways there are to plant potatoes. I’ll be very interested to see how that turns out. Thanks for sharing! 😁

You had a lot (!) of pill bugs in your boxes. If you watch some of the English potato growers they use containers too, but large hard surfaced ones that can hold a lot more dirt. I bet your potato experiences can only get better!😊

Hi Lisa, good to hear from you. Yes, there were lots of pill bugs. That’s why I am trying more dirt this year and not putting so much straw in hopes that it will keep the soil dryer and deter the pill bugs. I hope my potato experiences only get better! At least that’s the plan! Thanks so much for commenting. Blessings friend! 😁

I plant mine very similar to the way you plant yours in the box, but I use 10 gallon grow bags. I am wondering if I need to not cover them up as they grow. Instead fill my grow bag all the way up and dig deep down to plant the potato. Celebrating Appalachia youtube channel plants this way and has good results.

I have never used the grow bags. I don’t know why, I just haven’t done that yet. I hope they work well for you! It’s so good to have other channels to learn from that are doing it your way to get little tips and tricks that’s for sure! Thanks so much for your comment! Blessings on your potato harvest! 😁

Maybe something got in and ate them, or some of your seed potatos were no good? Oh, poor drainage is a big problem :(. I hope you try again, this time with drainage holes :). Good luck kudos for the experiment 🎉

Hi Mari! I wondered myself about them being eaten. I do believe the drainage was my problem! Thanks for your encouraging words! We will see how things go with this year’s experimental box! 😁

Why not just form a basket or tube of chicken wire, line w straw to keep soil in & plant in them? Have seen many do that.
@OpenHandFarm

Hi! I actually did that years ago and forgot about it! Thanks for the reminder! 😁

The straw kept them to moist which caused the rotting. The straw on the top would have been fine.

Penny I was so sad to see your "harvest". Perhaps we should just plant what grows well in our area. Here in Alberta, Canada our rich black soil grows potatoes, carrots and grains like crazy. Sweet potatoes, winter squash do poorly here because we do not have the length of growing season. We also grow potatoes in reusable grocery bags. Just fill with rich black top soil, plant about 6-8 inches deep and water if you are not getting rain. Place the bags in a sunny or semi sunny location. No straw. Interested to see how you do this year. Blessings.

Thanks Barb! I love the bag idea. Yes, sometimes we just need to say I can’t grow that. We’ll see how this year goes. I struggle with carrots as well. But I’m gonna throw some down anyway. 🤷‍♀️ Blessings on your harvest!

I have not, but I really intend on doing that this year. Do you eat them? Do you have a good recipe? I usually feed them to my rabbits.

@@OpenHandFarm No I've never grown sweet potatoes but I am this year. I've heard so many talk about eating them, I just don't know how.

I have a sweet potato video. In it you’ll learn how to make your sweet potato slips. Then you put the slips in the ground like you would a potato. I think they are easier than potatoes and I always have better luck. Hope you enjoy training them! 😁

Thanks so much for chiming in on this! So good to know! I found this info on the web… Sweet potato greens are the edible leaves of the sweet potato vine. Though widely eaten throughout Asia & Africa, they are less well known to most of us in the U.S. The good news is they're edible and delicious, high in Vitamin C and B6, and they thrive in the summer heat, unlike all the other leafy greens we crave I will definitely try them this year! 😁
