Planting roses correctly will help them get off to a good start. Rose Expert Bill Dickerson shows how to plant a potted rose. Bill recommends getting your rose from a nursery in the spring. Preparing the hole is important and Bill shows how he does it by adding gravel, soil, fertilizer, and Epsom salts. He also shows how to plant the rose in such a way as to not disturb the young roots in the pot. Once the rose is in the ground he talks about mulching the young rose and about how to prune it.

My grandma asked if I could plant three rose bushes she just bought. Thanks for all the tips and tricks. I said yes without knowing a thing about it, feeling prepared now.

What a nice way to be gentle to the plant's roots! Is it better to purchase roses on their own rootstock or on grafted root stock. If on own rootstock, do these need to also be planted high? I would like to know the varieties that do best here in the mid south. I am especially interested in David Austin roses and Kordes roses. I rarely find these available locally and have to order, although I would much prefer to purchase locally. Olive Branch, 7b

When I was putting my rose in the ground today out of the bucket. Most of the root ball broke of, I was easy with it, but I would say half of it was gone. I water the hole before and again once the rose was in the ground with horse manour packing the hole. Is there any thing I can give it to increase roots??? Do you put wax on the parts you have cut???

Any tips or recommendations for zone 9? I’m in a drought area of California, open to suggestions. Interesting how he cut the pot around the rose itself, great idea to keep everything together.
@tracyp6849
@tracyp6849 2 года назад
First 3 inches of soil should be kept moist. Not wet, just moist. Also in zone 9. Mulching will help keep the soil moist

Thank you so very much for this very informative video. You mention a fairly new product that has feathers, kelp, worm casings, micronutrients and some slow release to feed the rose plant. Would you kindly share the name of the product? I can't wait to transplant my roses here in PA Zone 7A. Again, thank you so very much! Hope to hear from you soon!!

I bought my bareroot roses from the home Depot Walmart Lowe's every year almost, just making sure they are thicker canes and at least three or four canes usually between $10 to $20, or if you are lucky Go to the Costco get those bearoot roses is number one premium roses 2 for $17 bucks, few years passed by all flourish all full of blooms great looking roses , instead paying $50 or more bareroot rose from nursery. But If you have deep pocket why not, would me the same shyt anyway just paying three times more

@FamilyPlotGarden
@FamilyPlotGarden 2 года назад
If you are moving the plant from one place to another you will cut off some of the roots. By pruning the top you keep the roots and top balanced. If you were to move it in the fall you might be able to get away with not pruning as it would have time to grow new roots when the weather is cool. If you are going to transplant it in spring or summer you should probably prune it.

This video basically covers it. If you live in a humid place you will probably need to spray with a fungicide to avoid black spot. This video has some more information: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LZ47D7vtnCU.html. Enjoy the rose!

Hey, malathion is the best product, but a good substitute is Permethrin. Read this Mississippi State Extension Service Article. It does a great job explaining different pests and different methods of treatment: extension.msstate.edu/publications/disease-and-insect-control-for-homegrown-peaches-and-plums This Family Plot video, on Common Peach Tree Diseases and Insects, may also be of some help: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-iRu2kApNg0A.html

Im in arizona Got 5 to plant in my retaining wall ..im scared it will burn to death, should i get shades?
@FamilyPlotGarden
@FamilyPlotGarden Год назад
Hey, roses prefer morning sun and some afternoon shade. The hot afternoon sun could burn some of the leaves. If they do get sun burned, don't prune. Keep them well watered. There is a rose society found at desertrosesociety.com, that will have some great information to help with growing roses in your area. Also, here is a video about general rose care, that may help you: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KBvmh8SteG8.html

Can someone tell me what he is sprinkling?
@FamilyPlotGarden
@FamilyPlotGarden 3 года назад
It is Epsom salts (Magnesium Sulfate)(MgSO4). That is available either at a nursery or big box store as a fertilizer. It is also available at any pharmacy or grocery store that has a pharmacy department. Make sure you get the unscented, pure variety. Pure Epsom salt is edible, so get the package that says you can eat it.

Naw, but seriously. Well done to the host. You can hear how uncomfortable this entire interaction is for him.

Why cant the graft be below the ground...plant is safer that way, resist cold and can develop own root over time.....never understood the logic behind keeping the graft above the ground, so vulnerable to weather especially cold, if your graft is damaged, your rose is gone and be keft with that 5 petal wild rose from the base.
@FamilyPlotGarden
@FamilyPlotGarden Год назад
The graft is susceptible to rotting if it is underground.
