You saying to try the old seeds has blessed me. About 5 yrs ago I got a milk crate of mason jars filled with different marigolds and wild flowers. they were in a back corner of the barn under a bunc hof gardening stuff. The couple had past 10 years prior and due to health did not farm for years before that..... As of this spring I now have those marigolds popping up through out my garden. I do not have my own words for the feeling so I will use yours.. "It warms my heart" beyond any explanation I could give.

I was feeling rather disheartened about my garden last week. I've been sick multiple times at rather important times this past spring which has put me behind in both seed starting and garden bed making, but yesterday when I was home alone on mother's day because of the nasty cold I have, I got outside to get some vitamins D & G (Vitamin Garden, according to Gardener's World 😉) and the 3 or so hours I spent planting new things, replanting things the chickens dug up, and replanning spaces that I had other plans for but the seeds never came up, my sadness over what wasn't changed into hope for what could be. ❤️😊 Just get outside, it will change you in more ways than you know!

THANK YOU for always sharing your experience as well as encouraging others to try new things. In addition, you aren’t afraid to tell us that things don’t always work out perfectly for you either. For many of us, you are someone to lookup to and instead of making us feel like you are immune to things not working out every time, you show us that it’s ok to “fail” and that it’s not truly a failure as long as you learn from it; “fail forward”. Love, hugs, & blessings. ~Kristin PS I think you guys should totally look into trying quail (specifically coturnix). They are super under-rated for self-sufficiency! I would love to chat with you about them! We raise, breed, & ship all across the US and love them so much!

I’m trying hard not to be envious of your space because I will never have it. I have 3 2x8 beds and 2 of them have trellises. I am very restricted in what I have room to grow. Even so, it has been such a joy to have kale and collards in the winter, and sugar peas. I’ll have one trellis devoted to my beloved Chocolate Sprinkles cherry tomatoes, the other will host one beefsteak tomato, and cukes. The squash and zucchini get all of the third bed so the can be happy sprawling. Eggplants and peppers are sharing with tomatoes. This will be a better year! I found space in ground for okra and chose Clemson spineless since the Alabama Red didn’t like my grow bags. Oh, and the green stalk is presenting me with THE sweetest strawberries I’ve ever tasted. I’ll fill it with lettuce and collards in the fall. Thanks so much for your encouragement, Jess!

Your garden is so lovely. Thanks for sharing, it's very inspiring. My family and I have also started a small backyard garden. We're learning how to homecan, seed save, make compost, and preserve what we grow. Every penny saved helps. Less than 2 years in our new home and we've completely transformed the backyard. We are beginner gardeners, growing and learning along the way. Recently I started a gardening channel to help encourage others to begin growing as well. No time better than now to learn self sufficiency. Thanks again for sharing, your channel helps me stay inspired and motivated to grow. God bless!

I'm so excited by the greenstalk planters. Between your channel and a couple others, it motivated me to attempt gardening again after my abysmal fail last year using grow bags. I got the original planter and have a variety of flowers and veggies in it. Then I just ordered a second one because of their mother's day sale thanks to one of your recent videos and got some strawberries and raspberries from Stark Bros. to put in the new one. If this year goes as well as I'm hoping, I'll just keep ordering planters during mother's day (since that seems to be a pretty good deal) each year until I have as many as I can handle. So thanks for the motivation!

Thanks so much Jess for talking about the GreenStalk Mother's Day sale! I lucked out! I got another by accident and they were very nice and let me keep it! I am twice blessed with GreenStalk planters. The one I ordered came on Saturday and another one just showed up today, Monday! I already have the one I got on Saturday planted with strawberries! Thanks to you and of course God! It's so fun to watch you talking about what you're planting in the garden. I think it was Paul Gautschi, the guy that does the wood chip gardening is the one that talked that Nature is modest and she wants to be covered up. He was inspired by God in that nature usually covers herself. That was so fun to watch you plant! I'm going to plant red noodle beans for the first time this year. This was so fun to watch! Thanks Jess!

I have never followed the depth suggested on the pack. I have followed Paul’s theory from Back to Eden gardening. He says plant the seed the depth of the seed. Less struggles for the seed to emerge. Always had great success with that method. He also says to cover the earth or she will do it for you. Let’s talk about the auger. I have used one for the last several years. My son bought a cement drill for me. Slower gears no kick back. It can snap your wrists if your not careful. It made planting so much faster. I transplant into solo cups. My bit is 3” auger. You drill and drop. So quick. It’s a life changer compared to how I use to plant. I always needed help now I plant alone. It’s great.

Cucamelons are always slow to start and slow to get going. They seem to need a lot of heat. In my zone, they need the hot summer heat but they cannot be in my 110F direct summer sun, so I tend to grow to the side of trees. I start them where I can keep them warm. When they start to tendril is when I transplant them.

How much do you concern your planting with "cross pollination", I believe that is what it would be called when 2 different types of plants planted too close together and as these two plants blossom and mature they turn into itself/or the neighboring plant so they ripen to be a combination of its neighbor that should have been planted a further distance away. So as in the mature plant they are the wrong color, wrong taste, wrong shape, etc. I certainly could have missed you talking about it, but when I was raised as a child I remember the end result being wrong and didn't know how people would know how to prevent that problem. I've not read a seed packet in many years but back when I was a child I don't remember reading on the seed packet "don't plant these particular seeds too close or near to. ? (fill in the blank) to ? (fill in the blank) as your plants will not turn into what you are trying to grow." Do you automatically know this information? Is it trial and error? And in the High Tunnels is it a bigger problem of this development going bad and being really wrong. I do hope I explained this so someone will know what I'm talking about. And if it is in another one of the videos can someone point me in that video direction.?? Thank you for all the knowledge you show in your videos. God Bless.

From what I understand the modesty comment was a reflection of the religious beliefs and "proper" behavior of women of the Back to Eden originator. I like to think of it as Mother Earth is so fertile and lush she will decorate every inch with growth if you don't prevent her. Love seeing your garden taking shape and planting on the go. I am hoping to be in my own space next month to start a small garden and orchard this year and grow it over the next few years as I observe where the plants will fit best

10 C?!!! I would be shivering in bed lol. It has never been that cold here. I just planted some melons outside but I think they got eaten. Every day I think of something else I can plant and it gets started on my gallery. The okra is now coming up and I cut a plastic bottle to cover them so things don't eat them in the night.

Jess, I tried growing my summer squash vertically last year for the first time and it seemed to drastically deter the squash bugs. I just put a strong stake in the ground and direct sowing my squash seeds a couple inches from the stake. Then continue to tie the squash vine to the stake as the plant grows and prune the leaves as it grows. Sort of like "main-lining" a tomato plant.

I was going to suggest a few videos ago to put some wind chimes around the new green house. But in today's video I think I heard some in the background.

I love the way you plant. I like my garden to be a jungle ☺️ i am completely ok with it all being huge and close together. I do square foot planting in containers and it ends up an amazing spot to drink my coffee ♥️

I have a bunch of planters on my deck too and I love to go out and drink my coffee out there too. So peaceful and the birds seem to like it too.

Your videos seem so stressed and rushed. I miss the lady who seemed to really connect with her space. It’s too commercial now.

Got two Greenstalks for mother's day...yeah! Will use them for strawberries, we have huge slug problems here in Washington state, hope this will help! Also got an antique pink toilet to decorate the garden with!

Cool, great way to decorate the garden. Maybe some trailing Lobelia growing out of the tank's top? What else can you do with a pink toilet?

I watch all your videos. I am currently looking out my window at snow. My tomatoes are patiently waiting inside. Our spring can be so volatile. Wish it were 50 here. Love your garden spaces.

I planted tobacco for the squash bugs here in east tn and had zero last year. I don't smoke tobacco but it is a natural insecticide. It worked great. I am guessing its one of the reasons why the Cherokee value it as their top plant.

I have an answer to the .:Squash Bug Problem:.. I've been trying it out this year with a near 100% success rate. As soon as I saw the first few squash bugs I spread some ground cloves on the soil at the base of the plants. Gone. Zero. I've gotten maybe two since then. Just don't get it anywhere on the plant itself, it'll damage whatever it touches. I'm planning on making a whole clove barrier on the edge of the bed I'm growing squash in so it doesn't wash away. That seems to be when I get one, when it needs to be reapplied. The oil is toxic to bees, so I would steer away from that, but the powder stays on the ground and they still come around to pollinate. Turns out, they're stink bugs and stink bugs hate cloves. 🤷‍♀️

People don't understand the humidity factor. Lol I live in California and when it's 50 here, I freeze my butt off. When I go to reno, NV and it's zero there, I'm good in a tee-shirt. The difference is the humidity. Humidity chills to the bone, just like in the heat, it cooks to the bone. Lol I've also lived in Missouri, so I've seen the worst of the worst heat and cold as well as tornadoes... People in other climates can't comprehend what humidity does to the weather.

My aunt would visit the PNW in winter. She was from Alaska. She would be colder visiting us than she would be in winter in Alaska because of the humidity.

I have a question. If I want to succession plant something in August, but it can be up to 115 degrees (Las Vegas), will my plants still be able to produce?? (like tomatoes and cucumbers and green beans)??

could you mulch raised beds with shredded paper? what about pet bedding chips?
@StoneKathryn
@StoneKathryn 2 года назад
The small wood shavings might rot too quickly and rob the soil of nitrogen as they break down. I don't think I'd mulch with them. I think Benj Meeks the YT Garden Guy warned against using wood shavings for mulch.
