I got the green stalk planter to grow strawberries in a couple of years ago.we had on the patio. It worked wonderfully, in fact my brother in law visiting out of state ordered one as soon as he got home. I did purchase the cover for the planter to protect the plants over winter. Love that you can take apart to refresh and clean out any weeds.
This was perfectly timed for me, as I’m planting out my bare root Ozark Beauties in my Greenstalk today! What a great tip about the root-booster solution-I followed suit! Thanks so much for sharing and helping!
Those are awesome but with my budget I can't afford it sale or no. I bought some at the Dollar G and made 7 teers. Looking forward to alot of 🍓🍓🍓🍓🍓🍓🍓🍓🍓🍓🍓😁
Thank you for sharing. This was a very helpful and informative video. I am a beginner at gardening and don't want to get frustrated with the process. Using these planters will hopefully make the process a bit easier:) I already purchased the original but I had no idea they had the leaf (wasn't paying attention lol). Just subscribed to your channel and purchased the leaf using your promo code ($10 off). Looking forward to watching your journey. Continue to stay safe, healthy, and blessed!
I bought my greenstalk leaf last summer - the green one, and I love it! It grew amazing lettuce and spinach last fall. I bought everbearing ozark starts last week and plan to plant them today since it’s sunny. I’m excited for your side by side comparison - and hoping the leaf provides itself! I couldn’t find anyone planting them in the leaf so I just decided to go for it. I love that you’re testing this out! 🙂
I do not have. You tube channel …but what I “do” notice with all the channels I have subscribed “to” … ever mix the PROMIX with water in the wheelbarrow BEFORE you put it in the container and plant the item .. It is such a dry medium I find that if you don’t “moisturize” it FIRST …it will sink to almost half …AFTER you give it the first watering …
Great video. I have tried a couple times to grow strawberries with no luck. Killing the plant each time but I see now I was planting at the wrong depth, either too deep or not deep enough. Thanks for the video
Young yes but a beginner, Yeah you must had a good coach I really do like your videos and vocals you represent a Gardener so well Young smart Gardener you are. Thanks for your teaching Lady
Since you posted the video a year ago, you probably already know that your choice of berries is SUPERB! I grow those same berries in Western Washington, and they do very well. I also grow Quinault strawberries, and they fare just as well. Last year, we had cold, wet, yucky weather clear up until the end of June. My berries were just getting ready to ripen when I went out of town for 4 days. While I was gone, the temperature shot up to over 100° F. My strawberries are in FULL sun. I thought for sure they would be frizzled, but not only did they survive, but they were thriving upon my return. They were second year plants, and the berries were huge and sweet. The plants also seemed to double in size, so I had to remove some to give away. I still have way too many plants from last year, which is why I am repotting the babies into a tower for my porch. I started my bed with 6 plants (2 of each kind), and by the end of the first season, I had 48 plants. ALL of them survived that heat wave last season (2022), and I ended up with over 100, after giving away around 30 (I ran out of pots, otherwise I would have given away more). So, yes, you definitely chose very good varieties.
Are there any update videos for the side by side comparison? I can’t find any, which kind of leads me to believe the test failed. I’m looking for strawberry solution. See a lot of Greenstalk plant outs, but not really any thriving harvests. RU-vid algorithm found what I could not! Here’s a year after chat about prior year side by side: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8q6ACnu2XA0.htmlsi=R_ZDadmk5G_HRFWX
I can smell that fertilizer. haha. been using it for years. bought the same brand but the berry fertilizer this year. first time doing strawberries in a tower!
The great thing about the Greenstalk planters is that the tiers are interchangeable in a vertical stack. You could've used 2 or 3 of the original and 2 or 3 of the Leaf tiers on the same stack, instead of having two different stacks, to test the pocket size to see which would be better for the plants.
Your soil plan would not work in our area. With a loose soil and nothing to hold in the water, I would be chained to the green stalk 24/7. Our summer temps have been at a steady 102 for the past 4 months and sometimes to 107. Even with watering every other day, the heat dries out plants very quickly. I have to lightly spray with water each section of the green stalk every other day as well as watering from the water trough on the top of thee green stalk. Using vermiculite or peat moss in the soil helps a great deal. This would apply to all southern states. Smaller container size of the green stalk probably works better for strawberries b/c of their small root system which doesn't go 10" deep. Same for lettuce.
I would love to know how this turned out! I also have a Greenstalk and planted strawberries in it, but they have been struggling. Too much heat around my area, I'm thinking.
Thanks for this video, got my first GreenStalk yesterday, Saturday, and planted strawberries in it. Thinking about getting the rolling dolly for mine and maybe another Greenstalk.
Does anyone know if they'll make it through North Dakota winters? If so, how to overwinter? Or for these extremes, just for annuals? Thank you in advance.
How much do you buy strawberries roots at Noires Farms? I want to buy 25 roots but they want to sell 100! I don’t want to buy this quantities in case I don’t like them.
B. Bromley getting ready to put the Fox Farm potting soil in the Greenstalk cups. What do you suggest for fertilizer? Liquid every couple of weeks, mixing in the Fox Farm dry fertilizer, worm castings or some mix of all three. I want to get this right before I put the strawberries in,
What good is this video when we didn't see any of the results of the different planters and also the different variety strawberries comparison. For all we know they didn't do well produced very little or died so following your instructions without seeing the results would be foolish.
Hi! I bought my first green stalk. And they had the pro mix at home depot. But it looked different than your bag. It didn't have the LP15 it just said potting mix. Do u think it's the same? And where did u get yours? Thanks
I just ordered all eversweet based on stark brothers recommendation for getting strawberries in the first year. I am interested in seeing if the others you planted produce in the first year. I noticed in their comments to another customer that eversweet were the ones they sold that would produce somewhat heavily. I received them today and I am planting tomorrow
I planted Ozark Beauty, Eversweet, and Quinault. All of them produced berries the first season. The berries doubled in size the second season. Allowing the runners to grow to the first baby plant did not reduce my harvest at all, either. I would recommend these 3 types to anyone.
I tried strawberries in my Greenstalk last year (Spring 2021). They were varieties suited for the southern Californian coastal zone (Zone 10). I used a potting soil I mixed myself, one that I have used with good results in planters over the years. Results were not good: The strawberry plants died one by one over the spring and through the summer. I was careful with watering and rotating the Greenstalk stack to maximize exposure to the sun. I am an experienced gardener with over 70 years of growing plants in all sorts of environments, soils, and climate zones. So I'm puzzled by my lack of success here. There are a few plants left but they are not doing well, whereas the snow peas I planted in the empty cells are doing very well as are a few succulents and flowers I am trying. I did manage to save a few plants that gave off runners and I planted these in containers. Right now they are loaded with fruit. I'll find other uses for the Greenstalk, but I found it a waste of time as far as strawberries are concerned. I'll be interested in hearing how Jill will do with her plants.
New sub. Thank you for the advice. I see where I went wrong and will correct it when I recharge the tiers. I hope to add more variety and have berries all summer. Blessings
Yes. I'm in Zone 7b so I believe it will be possible. The ones in my raised beds and ground beds survive our winter. Containers are always a little more susceptible to winter cold, but I'm hopeful.
Just watching this in October of 22. Wondering on the results of the experiment as I am looking to purchase a green stalk for strawberries next spring. Thank you!
They did well all summer, though the harvest was smaller, compared to the strawberries in my in ground garden. We did have an extremely hot and dry summer though.
I bought the Mover base with wheels. Would have been nice to know the Ultimate spinner base also could come with wheels. That looks so much better to be able to spin AND move. Does it hold the same amount of weight?
Yes, it does. I do enjoy the spinner when the planter remains in the same place, but it’s easier to “move” the mover than to move the spinner on wheels.
Hello! This is my firs year of using the greenstalk planter. Could you please write down the bags of soil and fertilizer and castings that you used? Thank you so much!
They both did well through the summer. I did end up losing several of one variety so I think that was an issue with the variety and not the Greenstalk. We'll see how the Greenstalks compare through the winter though with the strawberry plants.
Yes, there was an update last summer. Over the winter, all of the strawberries that made it through the summer made it through the winter. There was no difference that I could tell between the planters; they both performed well.
can't wait to see an update on this, i wanted to plant strawberries in my vertical garden too but wasn't sure if i would be better off using the new leaf size!
I filmed this 2 weeks ago, and they're growing well! I hope to do an update later on in the season but if you're on Instagram, I'll also update there @thebeginnersgarden
@@thebeginnersgarden Thanks, was thinking about buying one during their free shipping sale, but not sure which one would work better for my strawberries. Can't afford to buy more than one to see which one works better.
Planted strawberries in a small row on side of backyard shed. Was a disaster. I had no idea they were so invasive. They spread under neighbors’ fences & expanded out in my lawn. Couple years later I was forced dig them all up from mine & my (thankfully forgiving) neighbors’ property. Planted alot of grass seed for everyone’s troubles
Thank you so VERY MUCH for your Outstanding Teaching video on planting dry root strawberry plants in a #GreenStalk! I visited #StarkBrothers today and they said they will have Dry Root Strawberry plants back in stock in Feb. 2023 $12.99 for 25! Very helpful so I set a reminder to order! I am so excited to watch many more of your fantastic videos!
