To save money on soil, you can fill the bottom with your fall leaves, grass clippings, etc. it will compost in the bottom and feed your plants. You will see some shrinking of the soil as it decomposes, just add more dirt to the top next season. Love me some strawberries!!! Good luck y’all! Sending garden blessings!!
@@WestValleyTransparency Theoretically unless it is constantly being disturbed it won't have good access to oxygen, and so it will be composting through an anaerobic process also known as cold composting which is much slower. (Its basically the same result as if someone starts a compost pile and neglects to turn it to add oxygen, it will still compost but with no heat and very slowly)
I have anxiety and depression that really ruins the quality of my life and I love putting your videos on to distract my mind. I just love you. You are the one who got me into gardening a couple years ago.
To help keep track of the new plants/runners the 2nd and 3rd year I use the colored twist ties found on bread bags. Example: Yellow goes around the 1st yr runners the mother plants get a red one. Keep track of the colors codes over the years on an index card noting the type, yr and how many of each :-)
THIS is the kind of video I've been missing on your channel! Thank you for going back to your "roots" and providing an educational and beautiful video like in the past. The lifestyle vlog format you've taken on in the past year is nice, but I do greatly miss the detailed explanations, the educational aspect, and the how-to's for gardeners. Best wishes! Thanks again!
I need more beginner videos lol!! I just bought a new house and I want to make a garden out back for veggies, fruits, and fresh flowers to pick! I love this🥰
Me too! I’ve never done anything like til recently I would love to know how to use the drip tube going forward. Bc I honestly have no clue. Feel dumb for needing to know but never planted anything until this year so I’m trying 🤣
I just started growing strawberries this year for the first time. I bought some Bonnie Plants Ozark Beauty that have white flowers and then the other day I seen some Bonnie Plants Sweet Berry that have pink and red flowers at Lowe’s so I bought some of them too. Check Lowe’s you might be able to find them still.
I started some from seed I ended up with 3 plants that made it. I live in a zone 6B and a lot of my foliage has died from the snow and ice we have gotten the last few weeks. Can I clean the dead leaves off? Should I leave it alone and new growth will push them out? I have never seen a strawberry clean up video I don’t think
There are, but you have to be in a warm enough zone to grow them. I had a few of them but had to dig a hole in the ground to put the tub in and pile straw on them to keep them alive over the winter. Eventually gave up and stuck with berries that would survive my zone 3b. Most of these types are zone 5+.
I love how natural your videos flow. the spontaneity and rawness of the editing makes it more fun each time. 🍓 I love strawberries baked with pastry or made into a jam. 🍓🍓😍 Bless this channel.
Girl you read my mind! I looked up your channel and strawberry planting last week and watched all the videos you already had out. Then I moved my galvanized tub to a sunnier spot in my backyard. Just waiting for some warmer weather here in Michigan so I can plant some strawberries! Thank you for sharing all your knowledge, you are a joy to watch.
When less berries are growing collect them in a freezer bag put them in the freezer. When you collect enough to do jelly/jam, make desserts or sauces thaw them. Be sure to trim the top, wash them also before freezing.
Probably not possible around here 😅😅... will be demolished as each berry ripens! Strawberries taking over the backyard sounds lovely (probably because I'm still trying to grow some. Fingers crossed for this year!)
I know this is a 3 yr old video - I’m doing strawberries this yr - tons of them! Thank you! I’m following your guide on what to do! We love strawberries & they’re a healthy snack/desert!
Just letting you know that you’ve inspired me to create a patio garden. I just bought strawberries from my local nursery. Should be here any day now. Looking forward to planting and taking my mind of everything going on!
@Janetta LeRose ... I’m with you! I went down this homesteading rabbit hole on RU-vid and i can’t get enough. How many other people now want to grow food (even on a small scale) out of concern for what happens when supply chain fails? If people growing food is one of the fallouts of COVID-19 I say that’s a great thing. I’ve always loved the idea of urban gardening. I’m finally getting my toes wet with a herb & veggie container garden. Good luck with your garden 👍🏽
Can you show us how to plant veggies like: - Baby Kale - Cut & Come lettuces - Spinach - Bell Peppers - Eggplants 🍆 - Zucchini - Onions 🧅 - Beets And herbs like: - Cilantro - Basil I have seeds for all and would love seasonal guidance on how to start them, transplant, & care for them throughout the season. I would love to see more of those types of videos if possible. I’m just not in a position to do landscape designed type plantings where I currently live. But I am allowed to do container gardening on a medium-sized back patio. I WOULD LOVE TO SEE MORE FRUIT, VEGETABLE, & HERB VIDEOS! 🥬, 🍆 , 🌶 , 🧅, 🌿, 🍓
Hi, She's done some videos on planting and harvesting onions ru-vid.com?search_query=garden+answer+onions And a few videos on taking care of herbs ru-vid.com?search_query=garden+answer+onions and Lettuce ru-vid.com?search_query=garden+answer+lettuce Just in case she doesn't get around to doing a video any time soon you could check out those ones...
Cha Ching Cha Ching. I am so jealous because she spends a small fortune on her garden, most likely more than I earn in a year. I still love watching just so I can dream. Keep up the good work.
I found strawberry plants in small plastic pots for $10 each. Pass. I found the same variety, 25 bare root plants for $10. It takes longer for production, an extra year but it saves a lot of money. Cheap and some times free pots can be made with food grade, 5 gallon buckets. Just drill holes for good drainage. You can save money on potting mix by mixing your own. There are many Utube videos on how to do this. She spends a lot but you can have much the same for a lot less cost. I did it.
You can literally grow strawberry’s from seeds off a store bought strawberry. Just cut off skin and place in between two pieces paper towel and once it does out after few days lightly scrap seeds of the skin and they are tiny but plant in a small cup with plastic rap over it In sun and after a bit it will sprout. Also the great thing about strawberries is if you buy one plant, you can have strawberries for a lifetime because they produce so many runners which make daughter plants.
You spoke a little bit about how you are glad to see people trying to be more sustainable. Are there things you have changed in your gardening routine to be more sustainable? I know Monty Don talks about changes he is making in his garden every once in awhile and I find it very helpful and inspiring. Would love to see more videos focusing on this subject🐝
I would LOVE to see more ideas of things we could plant in containers like this. If you’ve got any other veggies or fruit you grow in these kind of tubs.
I did this from a used kiddie pool last year. But I love the look of the metal container. I will be doing this project this year and plant peppers and radishes and basil in the kiddie pool. Awesome video!
Setting up a new garden at my new house and cannot wait to have strawberries again. Last time I had them growing my son was just under 2, now he is 3 and he remembers eating them from the garden and is so excited to have them again. On that note, when you mentioned not wanting a swing set, what about adding little pockets throughout your garden for Benjamin? That way he can have an insight area to play wherever you are working. Swing hanging from a tree, little tub (just like the one in the video) with dirt just for him to play and drive his cars in, a little sand table tucked in somewhere else...tons of ideas. Like a secret little kids garden. That way nothing is too in your face and also easily dismantled when he grows out of it or changed as he grows. It doesn't have to be tacky, brightly colored toys either. You can get creative and make the spots out of stuff that fits in well. Like the teepee you created for him...stuff like that tucked in throughout the property. Just a thought. My son loves his swing set but it is the swing and sand table he likes the most. Our vegetable garden is out of sight from his swing set so I have left a small 3x3 raised bed available for him to dig in in my garden so he stays there to play while I work and he loves it.
@@jacquelinewubbena6604 2 is the perfect age to get started! There is so much for them to do to "help" and the older your son gets, the more he will want to help. My son has been out in the garden since before he could walk. Now he is 3 1/2 and happily spends the day in my garden beds or veggie garden with me.
My grandson at 2 would say “ come on grannie, I water tomamoes “ The only problem was he’d want to pick both green and red. He’d say “green tomamo, red tomamo,” like duh grannie they’re both tomatoes. LOL. Love those memories and now I catch myself saying tomamo. His other word was gardee instead of garden. Precious memories.🍅❤️🍅❤️
I love strawberry containers. Benjamin is going to love it too!! Those arbs are looking incredible topped the fence already!! Can't wait for an update video!
Great! So, we have a small, well established strawberry patch (ground). The "runners" have easily rooted and created new (Free) strawberry plants. Love that propagation was mentioned....there are so many plants that are featured that can easily be propagated without spending any money. 👍🌱
Berries are my passion! I grow 6 varieties of strawberry, 4 varieties of elderberry, 3 varieties of currant, 1 variety of blackberry, 8 varieties of blueberry, 9 varieties of raspberry. It's always such a joy to go picking (and eating) in the garden. Added a peach tree and a fig last year, and am continuing to add to an orchard with apricot and nectarine. Thank you for the fun vlog!
Thank you so much! Your beginner videos are so clear and informative! Even showing and naming the pieces in your irrigation setup, describing the hole spacing and flow rate - that was an aside, but contained so much information itself! I have a new pink strawberry still in its pot, and trying to figure out where to put it. I think I can do a container like yours!
I do love strawberries! I am planning on growing this year's crop in containers & I am excited! I have grown strawberries in the ground & that is a job! This way I can control the growth!! Thank you planting that idea!!! 😍👍🍓🍓
This is such a great idea - never thought of growing in this kind of container! This will be a great activity to do with my kids -they're going to love this!
Great tutorial Laura! I also like to grow strawberries in containers and I don't clip the fruit off first year and I have never had any problem. I have done a video on setting up a strawberry tower recently if anyone would be interested to check out.

I had no idea strawberry’s had different color blooms!!! 😍 I had no planned on doing a crop garden this year but I may do some container planting.... I really love growing food!
I will love a follow up on these. We are tagging them as favorite for next years garden if they do well. I’m so excited. I plan on letting them be a little surprise for my 3 year old granddaughter when she comes to visit. She loves strawberries and is just now showing interest in what I am doing outside. By next year, I expect her brilliant self to be a full fledged gardener! Lol. Yea right. Anyway, thanks for posting. God bless.
I’ve live in a house with a balcony and don’t have access to garden in the yard. I try to container garden every year but the only thing I’ve been successful with are blueberries, strawberries and flowers. I’ve never had any success with any kind of veggies. I never would have thought I’d be growing berries, but I started planting the runners in other pots to propagate my strawberries so I have even more plants this year. Love me some berries! I started using Espoma Berry Tone after watching you and love the results.
I just sent away for strawberry plants. 25 bare root ones. Oh my I'm going to need a few more containers. Thanks Laura for sharing this video. 🍓🍓🍓🍓🍓 🌻💗🌻💗
Hello, I really appreciate your husband's gifts of his choices for editing/background graphics/smooth transitions in both still photography choices for RU-vid thumbnails or I'm so old I called "opening stills" 🤣 I asked my 12yr.old grandson, what are the RU-vid little pictures you can pick from called 😂", I think, I hope you have grandparents that can relate!! I absolutely adore listening to you talk and thank you so much for your videos they definitely are soothing to my spirit because of arthritis I am primarily a "patio pots gardener" , always your friend and sister in Christ lisa McDonald 💙🙏🌻
Yay! I have more strawberry plants coming from PW today, so this is very timely! I love the way they look in the galvanized tub, and can only imagine what it will look like when they grow. I may be stealing this idea for a few of them! 😉 Thank you so much and please stay safe & healthy! 🙌💚🍓
My 7 year old gal loves strawberries. I plan to plant different types of strawberries this Spring. I am in Boston. I will put the plants in a large container as strawberries do spread out.
Tried this, made video not as good but it was fun ! I simply loved it ! Great idea, and you're very informative. Thanks to you i have my own strawberries in container and also my laundry basket turned strawberry planter 2 !!! 🍓🍓🍓🍓🍓🍓
You blew my mind when you just squeezed the plastic container and the strawberry plant popped right out! I’ve been cutting and wrestling the plastic for years. Just tried that with some plants I bought- MAGIC
Thank you, Laura! I got 4 strawberry plants this year and I'm excited to watch them grow. Love the straw idea...will be adding that. Maybe that's why they're called "straw"berries. :-D
Thanks so much , this time it’s mine and my toddlers first time trying to plant strawberries 🍓 and your videos helped me so much . I really really appreciate your explanation and simplicity.
Hi can you please show us a video later on to prepare for colder seasons once summer is over? I’d love to see how you prepare it all later on :) thanks!
This was all so so helpful but I got lost about the drip irrigation. I live in Michigan with a small yard and was hoping to find a way to grow a lot of produce in small areas
That tub looks like the perfect height for Benjamin to pick strawberries!!! =D Thank you for the information... now I know the best way to plant my strawberries!
Hi Laura, I have a question regarding the fruits, like the different colors of the flowers, will there be any difference in the fruit that the plants bear? I mean to ask if the strawberry from pink bloom plant will taste/ look different from the red bloom plant? just curious. Thank you for your videos and answering all our questions 🙌🏻👍🏻 they are very helpful 💙 Im glad to be part of Garden Answer🌺 😊
I grew some of these red and pink blossomed ones once (different varieties than what she planted), and was underwhelmed by the taste. If you're going for taste try the Charlotte strawberry. You won't have the pretty blossoms, but they're like strawberry candy.
Oh my gosh you are wonderful to watch. Very relaxed, calming and easy going with the planting. Makes me feel calm about planting and taking care of things. And very informative. Answering all the questions I’d ask. 🙏
Hi Laura 👋🏼 I was wondering if you were going to come up with an ‘offical’ name for your new land. I know you have names for the other parts of your property so seeing you had an idea for your new area? Maybe you could do a vote or something? Also please stay safe.. we need you in our lives 🙂
Now I want to plant some strawberries in containers! Thanks for the inspiration! One question: how would you over winter the strawberries in containers? Do you need a cold frame to keep them from getting too cold or freezing through the winter? I'm in Zone 4b.
@@Heartbeetnutritionist they most certainly would not survive in that metal container, they would freeze solid lol... i recommend a bare bottom raised bed, which allows the roots to lock into existing soil, in which case they WILL overwinter! hope this helps! (: god bless.
The berries she planted might survive if you dug a hole just deep enough for the top of the tub to be level with the ground, and then cover them with 6-8" of straw to overwinter. Otherwise I'd just choose types (none will have the pretty red or pink flowers, though) that will survive without a lot of fuss. I've found Charlotte strawberries are pretty hardy and I'm about to add some Fort Laramie plants.
This is easy stuff. What I find difficult is the flower combinations you make. How beautifully you blend colours and texture together. For me that is amazing.
@@emmamartin817 What you need to do is attract natural predators such as Hedgehogs, frogs, toads, newts and Slow Worms. They see slugs and snails as a veritable feast. Don't use slug pellets as all that does is attract even more slugs and they can be highly poisonous to domestic pets and wildlife. Make a small pond, doesn't have to be big and very soon you'll have frogs and toads hopping around. They also eat other pests.
@@emmamartin817 Then you eat the chemicals you use. Might as well just buy your veg at the supermarket. I don't know why some people don't like frogs and toads - they're gardeners friends. I don't like Earwigs but they also do a good job of getting rid of pests such as greenfly, vine weevil larvae etc. so I leave them to go about their business. I suppose I'm lucky as I like reptiles and amphibians. What I say to people who dislike or fear these creatures is learn about them, then they become less scary. Another thing you could do is learn about companion planting. This is where you plant, for example, lavender which deters midges, mosquitoes and other flying pests. There's a lot of info on the internet, just make sure you type UK into the search bar otherwise you'll get plants coming up that don't grow here. Hope this helps and good luck with your gardening 🙂🌻
You do you. I'll do me. Avoiding chemicals is not a major factor in why I grow food or in my life. I have looked at companion planting before and it's too much work for me as I have limited garden and greenhouse space and mobility issues so the amount of effort I can put it to the garden is restricted. As for ponds...half of it's a bog anyway.
Thank you for these helpful suggestions for container strawberries with easy to follow directions. I didn't actually see how you hooked up your drip watering system to the actual water supply? Like your straw on top method. With our world situation right now this gives us an opportunity to enjoy our patios with a very active healthy out of doors growing environment and a beautiful way to nurture ourselves. Keep all these wonderful ideas coming. Fran ~ from the Palm Beaches of Florida
I have tried the container method in the past, but had no good results. I like the ideas you offer in this video, but would like more info on the watering system. Do you have another video where you explain the watering system in more detail?
Great information! Question regarding feeding, why do you work in feed throughout the whole pot rather than just the top portion? Do plants (flower and food) benefit from having feed underneath their roots if they can’t yet reach it? I thought the feed would water itself down the pot so have never thought to work it below the surface
Also curious! I purchased the stock tanks that you did in another video for strawberries. Would love to know how to overwinter since I can't just bring two stock tanks inside LOL
Cute idea!! Question though.. - I've been reading to not grow any berries in any metal because it leaches into the food.. Do you believe otherwise? Or is the risk so little that you're not concerned? Also, I notice on the blueberries you planted - you used soil acidifier (not berry tone) in a clay pot. Is there a reason for that? Thanks for all the great information - as always!
I am watching this but have no intention to grow strawberries.. you are very skilled in keeping your viewers watching whatever you are doing :) keep it up.
This is so inspiring; I would love to grow our own berries this summer! I know you don't have deer in your area but they are a big problem here. Do you have any suggestions for those of us who would like to grow strawberries in containers but are also dealing with deer?
I just received my PW berried treasure strawberries today and super excited. I planted them in a wooden 4 tiered planter hope that is enough space as this variety grows up to 16" tall. This video was right on time! Thanks!
I’d like to try this with my students at school but I don’t understand how the drip tube/watering works. Could you please explain a little more? Thank you. 😊
It's pretty much just standard plastic tubing with some holes punched or molded into it. The water comes out the holes at a slow rate and waters the roots rather than the whole plant (the leaves really don't need it- they'll get all they need through the roots. What she did was to put some solid wall plastic tubing (without holes) through the bottom and up to the top to carry water to the drip tube, then she connected the short piece of drip tube with the coupler, then plugged the far end of it so the water only comes out the tiny holes otherwise most of it would come out that end. What she didn't show was on the outside end of the solid wall tubing she had to install some sort of adapter which would screw onto the end of a garden hose. Then it's just a matter of turning on the water until the soil gets as moist as it needs to be.
My strawberries have been awesome this year! My one tip is being SUPER accountable about bringing them inside each night. Even after April with no frost you don't want it to over rain too much. Accuweather should be your bestfriend!
You have perfect timing! I bought some bare root everbearing strawberries and have been hesitant to plant them. This video has motivated me to plant them today. I just have a question about wintering over. Can I leave them out in their container similar to yours in zone 5b/6a or should I put them in my unheated garage until next spring? Thank you!
MTHorses I’ve seen someone add rocks that are painted to red to their strawberries. When the animals tried to eat the rocks it deterred them from trying to eat the strawberries when they grew in
I’m gonna plant some strawberries 🍓 in a container like that this year . I’ve gotta do some more research on how this watering tubes work. Thank you for sharing. I’m new to your channel. Have a wonderful day
I grow my strawberries in containers in zone 6b. I covered them in straw to overwinter them and they came back with new spring growth, but we just had a freeze last night ( which decimated my growing delphinium!) Will the strawberries survive these spring freezes?
Sherry 2 I had some strawberry’s from last year and did nothing to them in the winter and they are fine and producing fruit already! This is even with two late freezes. Strawberries seem pretty tough.
You have inspired me to try growing strawberries! Will the plants winter over or will I need to buy new plants every year? I am in the northern edge of zone 6.
Strawberries are perennial and can be grown in most of the USDA growing zones. Just pick a variety that is suitable for your growing zone. This guide will help you select a variety that is recommended for your area. strawberryplants.org/strawberry-varieties-by-state/ If you are planting them in containers, you will need to give them some kind of winter protection (straw or dry leaves work great for this). I hope this helps! -Margie
