In the olden days the grain mill was most often the “Heart” of a community. Here at Metcalf Mills our goal is not only the preservation and education of the grain milling process, but also to help provide a service and products that help make good, healthy, fresh milled goods more available to individuals and communities. And hopefully bring back some of that “Heart” and maybe a little more Love.

Down here in Louisiana I planted my potatoes in late February. But that last late freeze we had in March killed off the tops of them down to the ground. Took my first sweet corn, my fig saplings I planted and most all of my peaches, pears, and apples. Potatoes about half came back, some looking okay others better. I've been planting out my sweet potato slips out for three weeks now. I'm stuck using my Earthway walking plow to furrow and then recover the rows with the moldboard. It works as long as the sandy soil is nice and light but when the summer heat hits it then it's just a brick. Even a rototiller bounces off. The potato patch is close to an acre but less than half of it is really coming through this year. Real shame, but they might just surprise me. Last year it didn't rain the whole month of May which is when they usually finish up and put their size in. We had plenty of rain this year and we put cow manure, leaves and coffee grounds by the ton out to compost in it last fall.
@metcalfmills5679
@metcalfmills5679 Год назад
Thank you for sharing this with us. Have you tried cover crop, ground cover? Keeping the sun off can be a big help..
@80krauser
@80krauser Год назад
@@metcalfmills5679 Even with cover the ground turns to a brick. Even in the woods under tree cover. But the potato patch isn’t fenced so anything other than potatoes going in it gets mowed by the deer. And to be fair when it gets July through September you aren’t getting much but the most hardy drought tolerant crops. Even okra and cowpeas struggle that time of year. So you have to plant early and maybe you can get some late if there is some rain come September or very late July. At least these last few years, it’s been months long droughts with over 100+ days and nights well into the 80s until midnight to 2 am.

I used to drive the cub and my grandpa ran the bull tongue when I lived with them. Here in the foothills of NC we had 52 acres of flue cured tobacco and 5 gardens as well as some soybeans here and there. That's how I earned my keep and my school clothes money. I have cultivated probably 100's of miles of soybeans and tobacco when I could barely reach the pedals. I loved seeing this..thanks for sharing!

In my opinion they never made a better cultivating tractor than them old cubs. I come an ace of buying one a week or two ago, but the misses informed me that we didn't need another tractor. We are working at a ratio of one tractor per acre already. I couldn't argue but I would've liked to have that old cub.
