About the host, horticulturist Ian Cooke
Ian is an American transplant from England who lives with his wife and young children in a small Connecticut coastal town where he has helped start a thriving community garden. His love affair with plants began at the age of three, helping in his grandfather's garden. Since then, Ian has been involved in all aspects of plant propagation, garden construction, design, plant selection and education.
Renowned for asking incisive questions that break down horticultural preconceptions, Ian reveals easy to implement solutions that save time and money and reduce plant failure.
YourGardenShow is proud to offer the community access to Ian Cooke's gardening wisdom. So if you have a garden or plant related question, just... "Ask Ian"!

Another excellent video. I really like the part of putting the pot in the hole before you back fill.

A lot better than how it was first planted. From my experience at ROMA ST PARKLANDS I would remove all the soil in the whole bed to a depth of 400mm and replace with well composted compost 50/50 native soil. good video thou, most people dig a hole just big enough to take the plant but not deep enough and leave it sticking out the ground which is no good at all. I dig it just a bit deeper so it forms like an upside down plate to allow water to be held there and permeate into the root zone, you can also make bigger sauces by raking a ring around the plant by hilling it up but this only works for bigger plants with spacings 1metre and upwards. It don’t work so well with rows of lettuce etc in which case I keep the bed flat and water slowly to cause run off, in other words match your percipitation rate to the output of your irrigation system and water for the appropriate time

Putting the pots in first is a fantastic idea! I notice, though, that you do not break up the root ball, which I have always done and thought I was supposed to so that the roots did not just continue to grow in a circle, as they dd in the pot. Could you please comment on this? Thank you.

Great video. I always thought that it was important to add water in the hole before putting in the shrub/plant. Your thoughts?

Thank you for your helpful video, I am moving to central Florida form Pennsylvania where I have lived all my life. My question is about the sandy soil. Do you have a video that shows how to plant in sandy soil and what plants to plant that are drought tolerant. Thank you

I made the mistake of planting perennials that bloom in the summer or next fall (365 days to bloom)!!! Planted on June 12,13. I read I was supposed to wait until fall! What can I do to help these new seeds survive?? I planted them in small containers that could be moved. I’m in zone 7. Help!

Greetings. In your video you mentioned that the surrounding soil was compacted but otherwise good. What if one does not have good soil. In my case, I have clay soil around our home. What should I do in addition to amending it slightly with compost?

Hi Ian would you up load a video about plant combination.
@VeganChiefWarrior
@VeganChiefWarrior 6 лет назад
it looks like its a raised bed but its just a lowered house thats the problem here, if it was a raised bed youd just have compost in it but that things got clay in it, i would either replace the top 12 inches or so with compost or raise it up higher with compost and plant in that, the latter being th preffered option depending on how it would look, caue its always better to work on top

+Bonnie Howell Because as you can see that plant roots wasn't overgrowth in circles and soil wasn't compact. You only need to loosen up soil and cut the roots if roots is growing in circles and soil is hard.
