Our first round of indeterminate tomato seedlings are a month old and it's time for us to transfer them to some larger pots. While this step isn't completely necessary, it will be helpful to have a larger transplant in the backyard garden as these heirloom tomatoes don't care much for our heat. So using a larger pot will give us a bit of a head start on the backyard gardening spring growing season.
We'll also be planting another row of leeks in our no-till onion plot. We have two rows of Tadorna leeks that need hilling, and then we'll plant a row of this "Jumper" leek variety to see how it compares to one of our favorites.

Love these videos Travis. I step my transplants up in rolled up newspapers. It’s easy, cheap, works great, and then I just plant the whole thing into the ground. The “newspaper pot” breaks down by the end of the year. I saw this method done by a couple of RU-vid‘ers last year.

Once you step up tomatoes the spring garden really comes into view. I step mine into plastic solo cup size, it's a deep, narrow cup you can plant the tomatoes deep, like you did, and get good roots. I stepped mine up today and moved them from under the seedling light to the porch. Next step will be out to the side yard garden.

I do the same. Super cheap and deep. Especially for tomatoes. They get really good root balls that’ll get them a headstart for transplantation into their new homes. Ever since I’ve been up potting them, I see a huge difference in how strong they get. 🤙🏼

Sue, that's a great idea that I'm going to copy. I give away about a 3 dozen tomato plants every Spring and never get back my 3-1/2" squares which run me $0.45 /copy. How do you deal with the top heavy tippyness?

@@markware7748 I put a group into a plastic box that holds them upright (like Travis' fig cuttings). Honestly I've never had them get so big that they fall over. Don't forget to cut a hole in the bottom. You can do this with a scissors.

@@markware7748 I use the rectangular plastic dishpans for the red solo cups. There are some shallow dishpans from the Walmart that will hold 8 cups, $2. The Bootstrap farmer trays, cell, and pots are great quality and I use them for most other seedlings. I can tell they'll last for years.

Last year, by accident, I figured out how to keep my tomatoes going through the heat. I had a bunch of tomato varieties in narrow raised beds close together that needed tying up to the trellises we use. The only time of day I could do it was from 11:30 a m. to 2 p.m., the hottest part of the day here in NE AL. My hubby suggested putting up a pop-up shade canopy over the rows as it would cover 4 of them at once and if I centered it in the middle of the 6 rows, I could be in the shade working W to E for the 10 feet of canopy cover. So I tried it. My rows are 16 feet long, so the canopy stayed in the exact center of my tomato patch all summer. And the vines that had looked so ugly and had so little fruit came to life with the shade during the worst of the heat. I had them on soaker hoses, so I watered them since the canopy kept the rain off. They produced all July, August & September while my other patch I didn't trellis in the sun on the other side of the garden fizzled and died. In mid September, the heavy rains started here again, so I had to take the canopy cover off, but by then the summer heat had lessened. We used a shade cloth on our greenhouse too this year and were able to get tomatoes out if it. Maybe you could experiment with rigging up a shade cloth over some of your tomatoes and see if it helps you keep getting tomatoes through your heat. I am going to try again this year and do part of both my garden tomato spots and in my greenhouse with a shade cloth to see if it makes a difference or was a fluke. Have fun gardening. :-)

I've heard of folks doing that with shade cloth. I've also heard of folks picking a shady spot on their property for tomatoes as a way to extend the growing season. Seems to work pretty well.

I start with a small 1 inch plug, then step up to a 2 inch cell, and then to a 4 inch pot before they go into the ground. Usually they are 12 inches tall when they go into the ground.

I got my 2.5 pots, with 2 trays , 1 for feeding or watering, and 2nd tray the excess. What goes into all u do is water other seedlings.I'm uppotting a few 2.5 pots as some I purposely plants 3 or 4 seeds , like u stated down here Yes we can grow basically year around, The heat hurts our Tomatoes when its 85-105 outside . Here in Montgomery County, Texas in July, August the heat stops them from producing , putting a lot of new varieties also , My 1st time growing my own transplants at 56 yrs old , got the heating mats. LIGHTS BUT so worth it as saw at Walmar charging for 1 Tomato plant $7.98 pepper plant 9.98 We get to grow what we want finally , not just what these stores put out for people , same old same old . Ill admit, i tried your method of seed starting with the perlite on top n im having %85-90 germination, tad better than just light covering of peat moss. Ive started my first garden in the desert n a RU-vid channel following the journey of transplanting one at a time! Sometimes two! Thank you for sharing how to’s n what not to do’s!

I started my pepper and tomato transplant in the bootstrap 3 inch pots. I just put them on a heat mat and then put a garbage bag on top and my tomatoes and pepper germinating in 4 to 5 days won't need to pot them up this year.

I start my seeds and pot everything up to solo cups and then plant in the garden from solo cups.

I like to up-pot my tomatoes, peppers and eggplants from the starting trays to solo cups that I've reused for a few years. They were a cheap, quick solution when we were strapped for extra cash. I added drainage holes to the bottom, of course. They make a nice transplant size for us and allow for great root development while still maintaining a tapered shape. It's also convenient for giving or selling extras.👍

I start mine in red solo cups in about a 1 inch or so of soil in the bottom and once the tomato reaches the top of the cup I add more soil to the bottom of the leaves covering up the whole stem underneath. No stepping up to bigger container.

@@LazyDogFarm My heirloom brandy wines are a good 2-3 inches above top of cup. Also did the Sungold and they are already above the top. Started the Hossinator the same way and they are about 2in from the soil. Can't wait. All under a grow light until they got so tall I put them under a regular fluorescent light. To me the fluorescent light did much better than the grow light. All started on a heat mat and transferred to grow lights. The Hossinator was started on 2/16 and already around 2 inches from the top of soil in cup. Won't be long and will be at top. After they got to the top of the cup I put them under a regular fluorescent light and they seem to really do much better. The cup I am using is almost 5 1/2 inches tall.

Great video Travis. Everything is looking good and healthy. My typical approach to tomatoes is to start the seeds early in the year (late Jan/early Feb) and step them up several times. I wait until the plants are 12-18 inches tall before I plant them in the garden. I strip off all but the top leaves and plant them deep so that only the top 2-3 inches are above ground. Once roots start to form on the stem section the plants really take off growing. This is how I’ve always done my tomatoes and have had good results with this method. That no till plot is looking great!!

Everything is looking really good! As for tomato transplants, last year I had really good luck with just planting the smaller plugs from the 162 tray. Of course, I let them form a much larger root ball, but what I really like is that I can cover them more easily if we get a late frost if I plant them small. I'm a home cheese maker, so I buy a few gallons of milk each week - Cut the bottom out of the gallon jug and you have a perfect cloche for protecting the tomatoes!

I use solo cups and a small soldering iron to melt holes in the bottom and sides. I fill the cups about 1/2 way with soil, add plant and backfill with a large soup spoon...works great. To save a little $$ on plant makers, I use a permanent marker and write the variety on the cup.

I start tomatoes 3/1 in 72ct tray and step up to 4 in and get in the ground mid April -may 1st. We can go earlier but have noticed the last few years that our real summer heat comes end of August- September. 12 miles as a crow flies from the coast in the “gap” so we get cooler at night than other inland areas. I don’t even start peppers until April 1st because of it.

I germinate in Proptek 162's as you do then step up to a 3-1/2" square with Roots potting soil. We specialize in leeks. This year I'm trialing Tadorna against Blaugruner Avano from Germany, Bartek from Poland and the heirloom Esther Cook from SSE. I take the additional step of using blanching tubes, fabricated from 2-1/2" PVC electrical conduit and cut to 9" length. Slip them over the leaves when they're a little smaller than your Tadornas and twist an inch into the ground. Makes show quality leeks and without incorporating any dirt between the leaves.

We take ours straight from the 162 cells and put them in the ground after six weeks. We have little transplant shock, and it appears easier to plant them deeper. We also take the suckers off and transplant them, worked really well last year.

I up pot to a red party cup. Hi ed them a chance to get strong. I. Florida they need that head start. My sweet corn fails every year. The leaves get 1/4 lesions that run the length of the leaf. Disease also kills the Male stems.

Try spraying Liquid Copper on the corn. It works pretty well for disease control in the garden.

Am I the only one who eats the leek greens? They are delicious in soup or sautéed in an egg scramble. So exciting to see all your plants! I consider myself lucky that you are about 2 weeks ahead of me zone-wise. It’s fun getting to anticipate what’s next.

Kendyll, we eat the green leaves also. My wife likes me to harvest her kitchen leeks with about a foot of green above the blanched section. She chops and sautés the greens before portioning them for vacuum sealing and freezing to add to soups and stews through the Winter, Blanched portions are handled the same way. I'm adding a bunch to a big pot of beef short ribs tomorrow.

I always up-pot my tomatoes from my proptek trays to 4" injection molded pots, and from there into the garden. You are a couple of weeks ahead of us in zone 8a (McDonough, GA)

Those 4" pots work well. I've used them many, many years. I do like the fact that these 2.5" pots have a smaller footprint and thus require less room in the greenhouse. We'll see how I like them come planting time.

@@LazyDogFarm I’d definitely appreciate it a lot and make sure you get some back for yourself!! It is certainly a tedious job and very time consuming but it’s not hard just need a screen that’s in a frame for rigidity and water. I think the worst seeds there is to try to save are from African spiked cucumbers, those seeds are covered in this jelly substance.

Last spring I went from 162 tray and had a great harvest on tomatoes, we step up peppers to the same size pots as you, they really don't start growing until it gets warm anyway.. ✌

Great video! I finally got to see how you apply that agrothrive. I really needed to see that application. Some of my tomato starts got too leggy before I could get to them. I'm hoping I got to save enough of them considering there weren't many in the pack I bought and the price. Now don't block me but I did get me a 6 pack of broccoli, cabbage, and brussel sprouts from Tractor Supply that are ready to go in the ground now while I'm waiting for my seed starts to get more mature. As far as your "lack of delicacy" when handling the starts I think when you know you know how you can handle them less gingerly. I think I must Iike playing in the dirt too. Maybe next year I will get to buy some of those good trays! Again great video as always!

Man hearing your indeterminate tomatoes are done in July actually makes me cry. I am NW PA and can be picking tomatoes July through frost. I guess there is a downside to living south. Ty for informational video. Oh yes u can't wait to see how your Giant Crimson goes. I am weeks behind you haven't started tomatoes yet. Mid March for my area. Share growing tips if you have any please. I was also able to get seeds from Luke so excited to see your progress & learn from you too!

I put some seed on napkin inna clear plastic cup full of water to the shot level and they terminated fast but those were right out of a tomato

I like the idea of the color coded pots. I was looking at the 2.5" pots on GHMS over the weekend but wasn't sure how sturdy they are. Don't rub that warm weather in too much. 😅 I only have a few days getting above freezing in the forecast. Still 2 more weeks before I start my peppers. That is when our weather really starts to break.

I plan to start my tomatoes in the next week or so. Just planted potatoes Sunday and will put my lettuce out hopefully one day this week. Then I start the tomatoes and peppers.

Hi Travis, I start my tomatoes, peppers, chilies, and Pink Chinese Celry in the seed starter modules. Then they get stepped up to a 2 1/2" pot and stay under the grow lights until May. 7B/6A can have a last true freeze mid May. So I have to wait, and so do my plants. The peppers saved from last year are pruned back and placed in 2qt sized grow pots then transplanted back out after mid May. Blessings.

I replant my tomatoes and peppers into paper pots I make using a wine bottle. They air prune.

Hey Travis small onions last longer ,the big ones rot on me ( before I can get to them) I like smaller onions,for that reason.

Sacramento used to be called SacOfTomato as the interstates were covered with tomatoes dropped from trucks taking tomatoes to the local canneries. I don't think there are any local active canneries anymore. I worked in the Libby Cannery but it had been converted to a State Data Center.

Just moved my determinate " Hoss container tomato " outside Zone 9-a (2' tall or better ) and they immediately started tuning a tannish color on the leaves all 9 plants , best I can tell this is not a disease that can be cured and have ben told to toss everything and start over anyone ever had this problem , they looked great indoors for 2 and half months !

That stinks. I didn't have very good luck with a few of those container tomatoes last year. They made a few delicious little snacks, but disease got them pretty quick.

I enjoyed watching that! I start my tomatoes around April 14th to go out around the 24th of May. I start them in deep cells and don’t step them up. I used to grow a few seeds in each cell and thin to the best plant but these days I grow expensive hybrid tomatoes so it’s one seed per cell. I usually get really good germination because of the high quality seed I use. If I had your nice greenhouse to potter around in I would probably step up too! I could spend some time out there with my portable Sonos speaker and a glass of wine!

Last year I had to pot up my tomatoe plants because I started them too early. But this year I'll be trying out smaller transplants. RU-vid channel Growfully with Jen na had done a trial with both and the smaller plants caught up with the bigger ones in a couple weeks. Which eliminates potting up. Gardening is full of experiments right?!? Great videos man, thank you!

Travis I have the same set up that you have and my wife just asked same question about stepping them up. Why! So in your seed starter tray you put a few seeds in to get them to germinate and ones you don't want you cut them off. I think it should be fine to start them in bigger tray containers my self. I would think less transplant shock. But I just started using boot strap this year and I see your selection of trays and am impressed. I am kind of starting over cause of the move and buying for future use. No more big box cheap trays.

That's right. Think about these nurseries that grow trees or shrubs. They don't start them in a huge pot initially. They start them in small pots and gradually step them up as they keep the winners and ditch the losers.

Onions are looking good, weed suppression is great. No -till maybe the way to look in expanding in the future especially if the results of the harvest are good. How’s the compost heaps going Travis? Up-planting is great especially with tomatoes.

Compost heaps are just going okay. I can't tell that they've gotten "hot" yet. They're sinking down fast though. Need to add more to them soon.

Even though I am in zone 8b here in Oregon, my growing season is not that long. I like to get my tomatoes potted up to a 3 1/2 square X 5 deep pot so I have really strong plants going out that will take off right away. This year I am starting everything in the 2 1/2 pots to start and pot up from there. Peppers and most everything else will go up to 3 1/2 X 4 pots.

The transplants will just sit there if the soil isn't warm. Kind of like the seeds won't germinate if the soil isn't warm.

Just stepped up my backup tomato's plants from a 1 1/2" to a 3" to get as much root ball as possible. Still waiting on my new seedlings to sprout 🤞🌱

I just use the 2.5” pots for all my tomatoes, peppers and brassicas. I know I am going to pot them up anyway. It works for me as smaller plants easily get chomped by slugs or birds.

My experience with potting tomatoes into larger pots is to fill the pot (unpacked), then use a dibble about the size of your plug to make a hole for the tomato. Drop the plug in and when you water it the soil will snug the plug in and voile’ done.

I've done it that way many times when using 4" step-up pots. But since these were only just a hair wider than the soil cells, I opted for an alternate technique.

I don't plant tomatoes until they are in a 3 or 4" pot. When planting leeks and potatoes ( sorry, 'taters) I plant them in a shallow trench and fill it in later then hill them after that.

I always bury my pepper plants up to the true leaves just like tomatoes. No it doesn't grow roots from the stem but it does make a sturdy little plant that is ready to grow.

The commercial farmers around here plant peppers on double rows. Not sure I've ever seen tomatoes on double rows though. Seems like the plants get too big for a double row. I wouldn't go closer than 2' spacing on tomatoes. And even with a 4' row spacing, I find I'm often cramped to get a harvesting basket between the rows.

Woohoo I planted a store bout Roma seed about 2 weeks ago and she went in the ground today. I do not have a whole lot of time my night temps will be in the 80s by May so time is ticking. Won't get fruit too set after that. Plants will then just cook. But I have a German Johnson in bloom and a Sweetie 150 with multiple blooms, they are quite a bit ahead of the Roma, but I think the Roma's will be fine. You are more delicate with your tomato sets than I am I grab them and yoke them out of the seed trays, they grow.

I ordered from bootstrap farmer last week. I got the harvest colored pots. So excited to get started. My tomato plants are just now popping up so it will be a mintue before I transplant them. How do you fertilize your tomato plants while in pots? Is it the agrothrive one week and something else the next week?

Does that black molded tray fit in the 10 x 20 tray and hold all the pots? The boot strap 32 cell trays I've used nest inside each other, bottom tray, cell tray and pots. That way you can lift up all the pots at one time and pour out stagnant water. I start my plants under lights, the heirloom tomatoes do fine but the hybrids start getting edema and purple under the leaves. Those wild genics don't seem to like being in a controlled environment. I raised the lights and changed the light spectrum to see if it helps. I like small plants but I usually start too early and have to step them up.

Hey y'all, My tomatoes seeds are scheduled to start next week indoors. ?? For you onions I started 300 onion seeds 75 each of 4 varieties on Feb 7th so today Feb 21 is 14 days. Three of the onions had great germ rate and one had a 0% germination all planted exactly the same in the same two trays. What is the best next step? The one that was 0% Onion Tosca Baker Creek. The other three were 95% each Hoss Sterling white, 2 more Baker Creek Red of Florence and purple Flat of Italy

It could have just been a bad batch of seeds. Onion seeds don't hold their germ rate very well from one year to the next. So if they were older seeds, they might have been toast. That's my best guess since the others germinated under the same conditions.

Grrr, we were past LFD by a month, in the mid 70’s and then ((drumroll)) a surprise hard freeze is coming in tomorrow. So irritated. I have a couple black krims planted in grow bags - and *could* bring them inside, but imma be lazy and see if they can hang with just being covered. The rest of my sensitive stuff is inside, the poor dears.

Need help, my red snapper and tashi tomatoes (about 70 plants) are beginning to ripen but 90% have small holes (green and red tomatoes) due to a 1 inch worm. I sprayed with "Garden Insect Spray" when I first noticed the small holes but probably started to late. Never had this problem before Could this be caused by the fruit fly? Looks like I will only save 10% or less of my tomatoes. When should I have sprayed and with what? Thanks for any input!!

Probably going to have to spray them every week. Pick all the tomatoes with holes in them because you can kill the worms once they're inside the tomatoes.

I've got nine different mater seedlings growing under grow lights and I had some nutrient deficiencies that I've overcome due to not fertilizing quick enough. I'm still having an issue with my leaves being kinda droopy. Any ideas? Leaves are now a good dark green color. Just droopy. I'm thinking it's more of a lighting issue at this point. Just don't know if I need more or less. I'm thinking more but really don't know. I ran a batch early for test purposes, but now I'm seed starting what I plan on planting this season. I know I am growing differently than you but you have a lot of experience and you always have really good input. Any help would be great. God bless you and your family.

Just stay on your fertilizer program, fertilizing 1-2x a week, and keep the lights right above the plant foliage so they don't get leggy.

Ron Ron...with the current prices of lumber and steel barrier fencing, I'd take a hard look at electric fence designs. You'll want something with lots of pop and they can be energized with solar/battery or a deep cycle marine battery. I built one in a remote mountain location to protect an apiary from bears and it worked as intended. Or just choot 'em.

@@cherokeecountry In your shoes, I'd run the wire at 6", 12", 18" and 24". If you have the budget, the Power Wizard 5000XD energizer from Tractor Supply would be a sweet choice. Five joules, 10k volts. If Porky touches his little wet nose to that wire, well, let's just say he won't do it twice.
