Planting trees in pastures for future livestock shade. Do not procrastinate about planting trees, best time to plant a tree is today. In this video we show how we are protecting the trees from livestock eating or rubbing on them. This was Connor's last day with us on Green Pastures Farm. If you want to keep your farm profitable every year, check out my 3 grazing books that I wrote on our website: greenpasturesfa...

Real food doesn't come from the grocery store on a styrofoam tray wrapped in plastic, or from fast food take-out. Real food comes from the earth & from the people who are connected to the earth. This video is not just about planting trees for future livestock shade. It's a testament of a man who shows what it takes to produce honest food & freely shares regenerative farming wisdom for future generations.

Talk about things sprouting. A neighbor took a mulberry he'd cut down and put a bunch of firewood length logs to keep people from driving off the path. After a couple of days of rain, every single mulberry log had two-foot sprouts coming out of them.

I was out checking out my back pasture today. The grass is mostly green and already 5-8 inches tall. It had been guy for hay for several years. Last year I just let it grow then mowed it all down. It seams to have helped. I am going to be doing soil samples here soon.

Salix alba best for it becouse you can plant cuttings. It also withstands a haircut well and its leaves are quite rich in protein

A good blend of mycorrhizae, mixed with Thorvin kelpmeal & alfalfa into an ACCT tea compost brew, and using purified rain water.. roots and growth will be doublefold.

@3:00 plastic zip ties as fasteners are faster, cheaper and safer than metal wire.

Tried zip ties last year, the cattle rubbing on the cattle panels busted them off. I will stay with 12 gauge galvanized wire from now on.

Awesome Greg. Fyi recently saw video by eliza greenman where she mentioned different elements different trees make available. Also, There is an old video of Bill mollison talking about pasture trees and how the cows ate them all one year across texas. Just happened to be several years after certain agrochem fertilizer used widespread on pastures. Grasses lost ability to uptake minerals if i understood correctly.

I have a copy of that book ordered and I'm expecting to see it any day. No mention was made of it being out of stock. We have a small acreage and it looks kind of empty out in the middle. We intend on fixing that. Probably planting this fall when the time is right.

An improved variety of honey locust. The same drought tolerance and durability. Thornless and it produces bushels of huge high sugar pods. Over 30% sugar content. Plus the shade it provides allows grass to grow right up to its trunk. In addition it is a legume.

If the autumn olive does sprout it will help the honey locust grow better cause it's a nitrogen fixer. So just cut the olive back every year for 5 years then kill it.

@@C.Hawkshaw E-coli is something that I was very concerned about in an animal pasture. I don't mind if the cows and other animals get some of the apples but I actually would rather use most of them for the family. The apples in the tree are obviously safe but in the normal course of things you get a lot of wind falls off the tree and on ground.

My father-in-law before passing had cows and few Chinese locusts trees in the pasture. The cows love the shade. The pods and branches they could reach were gone immediately. Now you can find Chinese Locust that produce more fatter pods than the old ones around my father-in-law's pasture. One thing to watch out for I have been told is black locust trees are very poisonous for horses. I don't realy know.

@@davej7458 Black locust and honey locust are not really related. Black locust can be poisonous to livestock (but AMAZING for fence posts); Honey locust is amazing for livestock.
