Good morning, Laura ☕️ I’m so, so happy Ken didn’t edit in music. I so appreciate the natural sounds as you go about your day. As soon as you said you were going after it, I had my finger on the volume and was so pleasantly surprised. It all looks so good and, I too hope the Locust Tree 🌳 makes it! 🤞🏻 Have a Blessed Day 😊🐈.

My +40 year-old honey locust has gone through a similar progression over the last 10 years in a zone 5b, semi-arid climate. First, a house addition close to the honey locust, under-planting with many hostas and lots of dieback that made for almost annual professional pruning. Last fall, I finally allowed my arborist to apply a growth regulatory treatment to help strengthen the roots to improve the overall health of the tree. They also recommended deep root watering at least once a month which I have done. The tree is slowly leafing out this spring and is looking much better. 🤞🌳 🤞 Edit: We had heavy hail yesterday. The honey locust only lost one small branch but half the leaf canopy is on the ground covering the shredded hostas and the back yard. And that's a lot of tiny shredded leaves! Time will tell how the hail has affected this tree.

The one issue with Laura’s daily watering is that it can cause weak roots. Twice a week watering for longer time periods are what’s normally recommended if you want strong roots. But she lives in a desert so I understand why she what she does. But the occasional deep soak like you said would probably greatly benefit all her trees and perennials.

I wonder if the tree got hit by lightening? Trees don't always split afterward but it could have been an even "broil".
@tonyaperry4763
@tonyaperry4763 Год назад
@@b.a.d.2086 We had a tree that was struck by lightning, probably about three year ago. The tree kept looking sick and slowly dying out. No one could figure it out. We tried various things to treat and save it, to no success. This past winter it started splitting, what we thought was for no reason. My eldest son is a supervisor for a tree climbing company. He came to take down the tree before it ended up taking out part of my house. Once he saw the splitting and inside of tree he immediately knew that the tree had been struck by lightning 😢 Odd that the CV splitting didn't happen for a few years after being struck.

Our 50 year old Sunburst Locus tree had about 20ft of ivy growing up it too. It had blackberries all underneath. We cleared the ivy and berries out. The tree barely leafed out for two seasons and we lost a few branches BUT these past two years it has done really well with dark lush leaf growth. We now have a fern and hosts garden under it! Our tree hung in there, hope yours does too.

Laura could this be Sunscald happening to your locust. Sunscald occurs when enough intense sunlight hits a tree's trunk to warm it so that cells break dormancy and become active. When temperatures drop at night or a cold spell hits, it kills the cells that became active. Sunscald, sometimes also called southeast injury or winter injury, tends to occur on the south- or southwest-facing side of the tree, where the sun hits the trunk. Damage may not be visible until spring growth occurs and appears as discolored, sunken bark that may split or fall off in patches. Some of the tree's canopy may die back. Heavy pruning, especially in fall or winter, allows more sunlight to reach the trunk and can encourage sunscald.
@susanhensley2038
@susanhensley2038 Год назад
My thought with this video wS they need a true arborist to inspect the tree and thankfully they have all these videos to show what recent changes have happened around it. Change is tough on people and imagine if we were trees? The weather changes as well.
@loloholmes2793
@loloholmes2793 Год назад
I wonder if it's reacting to all the SO2 that's been in the air following the volcanic eruption in the Kamchatka Peninsula. She has said the daffodils & tulips bloom schedule is off, so maybe the tree is reacting to their unseasonably cool spring
@PyraDraculea
@PyraDraculea Год назад
@@loloholmes2793 between that and the huge Tonga volcano a couple years back, I expect a few years of weird weather. I think there was a write-up in the New York Times last fall about how the Tonga volcano might affect the weather. I'm a bit further up the coast in Canada an we had a weird winter/cooler spring, too.
@TheSlikateer
@TheSlikateer Год назад
Great observation. I also heard that if there are too many breaks in the honey locust’s bark and the breaks are exposed, especially near the roots, this can also cause air damage and shock the cells. This is one tree that can benefit from mulch on the roots.

In January California was hit hard with storms. We lost 10 trees in total including our 60 foot tall Grand Empress tree. It actually fell on our house. Living in a mobile home it destroyed our home and it will have to be demolished. We all got out (pets too) unharmed even though it fell in the room were all in. It was unbelievably terrify. As upset as I am about losing our house, losing that tree has been difficult too. It created so much shade for our gardens. Now we have so many shade loving plants with nowhere to go. Losing a tree is awful and I really feel for your parents ❤

With the honey locust if you don’t see any signs of insects/disease above ground you should look at the roots. Perhaps there is root girdling/collaring. You can carefully clean around the roots near the the base of the tree to check. Or your local arborist should be able to do this for you. Love your channel, brought many hours of enjoyment. Good morning Garden Answer friends!. My thought on the locust tree being sad..I am not by any stretch a professional with trees, but it could be in shock from surrounding work. We hired an arborist 2 years to inspect & diagnose trees surrounding our home, many diseased for years prior to us moving in, so we had them cut down, nothing touched with roots & small level stump remains. However, our surrounding trees several feet away,, started leaf dropping seemingly healthy leaves prematurely, last year & already again this year. Have a great day all. 6:07

My front area of my home is almost done. I just gotta transplant more ornamental grass. I. The front area. Thank you so very much Laura for sharing your ideas with us all. I have learned so much from you. My neighbors are amazing and excited to see the transformation in the front. Thanks to you and your videos I have people pass by complimenting me on the one area. You are definitely a true inspiration to us all. I myself don’t have a huge area to plant things. But I am loving my yard so far. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your inspiration and tips on planting. Love and hugs from Willamette Valley, Oregon area.

My dad had a locust tree. He built a low retaining wall around it (maybe about eight inches to a foot high), filled the space with dirt and planted a bunch of flowers. It took several years to start showing stress, but the tree died because the roots had been smothered. It looked a lot like yours.

This was just lovely. Loved watching and listening as you worked, concentrating on this one unique space. And the cats! They are like Alfred Hitchcock in his movies, always making an appearance... Russell on the loveseat as you moved it back into place! So funny! Thank you, Laura!

10 years ago I would have never had the confidence to design my garden, I tried growing some veggies every year but I never really tried flowers. This year, my garden is on its 3rd year and looking established. And I'm planning my mom's yard too.

Laura, thanks for sharing your gardening experiences with us. I look forward to each and every one of your videos because there is always some bit of learning to take away from them that I can apply to my own garden. About that honey locust, my ancient tree is slow to leaf out this year as well. Truthfully, it is always slow to leaf out here in my growing area (zone 4-5, Ontario, Canada). Typically, if our Spring is very cool or very wet the tree sort of sulks until the weather warms up and the rains let up. While honey locusts do not want a dry soil, they also don't like being water-logged. You've had a wetter than usual Spring in your area so that could be a contributing factor. You might also want to check the bark for signs of canker or fungus just to be safe. Spider mites might be a remote possibility as well. But, when all is said and done, just give it time. These are fairly resilient trees.

Just a good day to do what you feel like in your garden! Mine is just beautiful thanks to you & Jenny (@Creekside) this year! And truly every year I’ve been watching your videos & posts. Thank you for giving me the courage to turn my back yard into my little piece of paradise here on the bluffs of the Mississippi River! ❤
