It's pretty good for a first time music-video, but, a music video doesn't tend to have so many static shots. To me it felt like a lot of the time I was just looking at a picture and her mouth moved slightly. The camera should also be moving, not just sitting on a tripod. It got quite boring.
@cadevisuals
@cadevisuals 9 лет назад
Thank-you! In my opinion, while there are many flaws with the video, I don't think adding camera movement would have worked for the story / vibe.
@M0nkky
@M0nkky 9 лет назад
cadevisuals You don't think? But have you tried it? Slow motion (singer) + fluide camera movements could be a great combination. Anyway good work bro ;-)
@Nomeaus
@Nomeaus 9 лет назад
Patrick Pfeiffer You're right, adding handheld shaky movements would completely disregard the points of the song. But in the video there were very few to no moving shots, everything was static and kinda boring. Some motion would have been better because, as you said, the music video is telling of seasonal changes and plants. If the camera is static while the point of the video says something other than static, it's just not too fitting. To go along with the static shots, there is hardly anything moving in the shots, it may as well have been a slideshow with music...
@M0nkky
@M0nkky 9 лет назад
Patrick Pfeiffer Steadicam / slider? + slow motion? I'm pretty sure it will fit perfectly...But it seem you know everything in filmaking so I guess you're right

M0nkky I agree totally. The shots where she sits on the bed in the field would be fantastic with a really slow dolly push in shot! :)

For someone who uses a T3i, I am very impressed. I mean, he did the filming with a T3i... cmon... you have to admit this is amazing. Very creative for a low budget music video clip. I'd say more powerful then other clips out there using expensive equipment but with no "deepness" or profound story to tell. It's all about who has the best equipment nowadays.

When people say there are too many static shots, I think what they really mean is that it lacks details that helps the viewer deduct what the song is about, what the video is about, and how the subject thinks and feels. The focus/subject is always her face, full body, or flowers. You never really get up close and personal to any details of her face, body, or clothes or things in the scene/landscape (other than the flowers). You had the chance to provide us with a variety of different, unique and interesting visuals, but no one really feels that the film has good imagery. Basically, the shots are telling us a story, but we want the details to tell us a hidden or more descriptive story. But there aren't many details... But those are just my personal thoughts and I am by no means a filmmaker yet ;)

I think its a great video. The static framing and the camera work is very in-tune with the state of the girl -- ridden on a hospital bed. Both the camera and the girl limited in their movement and vision. The girl trying to wander and exit the frame at times. Trying to sow a seed in hope of a new beginning only to end in despair. I loved the visuals as well. I think there is plenty of poetry there.

Reading the comments, I wonder if at least someone understood the video are the things she sees in her coma, otherwise i can't explain why would someone say the video is unnatural and lacks depth. She seems to be reconciled with everything and doesn't give a fuck, might have even attempted suicide, otherwise i don't know why would young girl singing melancholic song die. Maybe i am weird, but when i am dreaming, it is slightly different from reality and i don't act like i normally would. This video perfectly captured all aspects of the song. It's been a long time since i 've heard something so simple but impressive.

I appreciated your music video. Although, aside from all the technical details that has been well discussed by the other users in the comments section, your film strongly lacks authenticity. If you decide to tell the story of a coma patient ; in order for the viewers to really FEEL your character's trauma and surrealist condition, you need to cinematographically recreate the feeling of it. You need to really translate what she feels, and the fact you haven't been in a coma yourself can be feel in this video. I don't feel (subconsciously), at all, this girl's condition. A life that is ending, that is to the edges of disappearing into the void wouldn't AT ALL feel like this. I think that you should have been really talking to multiple people who's been in a coma. That you should have really understood what they could feel, how they could think : what their faded memories of this experience looked like. Your story would had felt way more intimate and profound. Then, if you're trying to make a dream sequence, watch a lot of Lynch and Bergman films and you will notice that cinematographic's translation of deams don't look or feel like this. The 'steady shots' choice was great, because it could have been transmitting the subconscious feeling a person in a coma is constantly having ; which is the impression of being held capture of your own physical condition : complete lethargy and inactivity. BUT, this choice was very theoretical, and you should have notice that it doesn't work if there's a shot every 8 seconds (I didn't actually count). Create a true rhythm with the cutting, there isn't enough shots! One day of shooting isn't enough at all, take more time (not just in rehearsing, but in the actual sooting). Finally, I think that, despite your passion for technique, it seems that you've almost lost sight of poetry. This isn't truly intimate neither it is moving. The 'sadness' of it is only due to the ending and the choices concerning the story you've made (that were all good once again). I saw your short film too. It's technically very cool, but NOT moving and profound at all. Work your poetry. And be intimate, authentic by please putting your own TRUE emotions and feelings to it. You're talented, and passionated. I'm looking forward for your next works

Great video Simon! You have a good sense for continuity which i really like, how ever there is something very small that i would have done different and that is in your first shot you pan out and ind your last shot you pan in. Logic tells me to reverse this beceause panning in give's me te feeling that you are going ''in'' there ( going in the dream ) and paning out give's me the feeling of leaving the dream :) Also not every viewer is smart enaugh to find out that she is in her dream world, so to tell your viewers that she is actually dreaming i would add and extra shot in the end where she is in a hospital bed in the hospital so the viewers know that she was dreaming :) Just my little tips man:) Great video anyway!
