THE SEOUOYAH SYLLABARY
In the video, you will see Cherokee words written phonetically and in symbols. These symbols are the Sequoyah syllabary, invented in 1821 by a Cherokee man, George Guess, known as Sequoyah by his people. Sequoyah is the only person in recorded history to invent a written language without being literate himself. Unlike an alphabet, The Cherokee syllabary has one symbol for each of the eighty-five syllables that make up the Cherokee language.
