Great job, and you did it all without liberating any asbestos. You'd never run out of rooms like this here in the USA; there are places where it's normal to texture all the walls in each room, especially as you move toward the south-west. But a lot of people in those areas actually like it that way.

Have you considered making videos on lime/clay based plasters? I have watched a few of your videos and you have helped me funnily enough learning to plaster in lime. I went through quite an ordeal with my victorian flat where any place that had gypsum caused major condensation and rot on the ceiling joists, i think gypsum has a place but the idea of PVA and skim on everything gives me shivers now.

Hello fella just a bit of constructive criticism, you've scratched the bonding to give the skim coat a key but the artex has no key for the first coat of bonding as long as the artex was done post 1999 then there's no issue with asbestos, I always score the artex with a stanley knife in diamond shapes then pva it that gives a good key for the first coat of bonding and will never come off. BTW the artex pattern is called broken leather. Can't beat skimming on bonding the same day you get a lovely finish, I love forming hand turned coves with bonding and skimming it the same day the finish you get is top notch.

Awesome work as usual, always great content in your vids. I’ve been plastering for people on and off for a good 10 years now but still learn something new from your posts, recently had a full house of artex to cover over, that was fun! Quick question though that I’m sure you’ve covered previously, when skimming onto old walls with horrendous suction, do you still manage to get a away with pva? Had a couple of jobs recently and even after 3 good pva coats, still pulling in too quick, nightmare on a staircase! Seen posts regarding blue grit but if going in the day before to coat up isn’t an option?? Anyone had success with SBR to seal internal walls instead of pva? Any tips from you or anyone else much appreciated! Cheers again for the excellent channel👍
@PlasteringForBeginners
@PlasteringForBeginners 2 года назад
Thank you mate, I really appreciate it! We usually PVA the walls with 3:1 and when we’re PVA the second coat get ready to start Plastering as the PVA starts to go tacky. It gives you a little more time Because the moisture is still on the walls. That’s helped me in the past pal 👍
@mikiex
@mikiex 2 года назад
SBR is good on hardwall that has dried to kill suction, but SBR is different from PVA. SBR doesn't re-emulsify when wet - it's often used as a waterproofer, so you must plaster onto it while it's still tacky. If it's wet the plaster can slide, if it's fully dry plaster won't bond to it.

I am currently faced with an indoor brick wall that has been hit by something and damaged the plaster in a localised area (20cm X 20cm). There is a half inch thick chunk of plaster missing. Depends on the depth of artex mate. You'll know by looking wether to scrape or not prior to bonding out, just think less stipple = less bonding required to get over the stipple of the artex.... all jobs are different. And usually 2 coats is better prior to skimming, just gets it that bit flatter.

How do you judge when to use the devil's float on the bonding?
@PlasteringForBeginners
@PlasteringForBeginners 2 года назад
When the Bonding is starting to go firm…that’s the best way to use it. Just as it’s Setting 👍

Did screwing the old ceiling boards to the joists seem to secure them - i.e. take out the bounce? Ps haven’t watched the video all the way through yet.

You can but I just think it’s faster Bonding over…and it’s cheaper. But yes you can and you’d still need to PVA. Hope that helps my friend 👍

I have been plastering for a long time now, and I stopped plastering on to artex ceilings because sometimes they just drop off, even when you do all what this lads done, never new why they fell off . So don't take the risk of that , just drop the ceiling and start again

I've never had an artex ceiling come away unless it has distempa on top so my guess is you've been unlucky with distempa

I've been plastering 18 years and I won't entertain plastering over artex anymore. Too risky if you get bond failure, too much weight hanging on old board and artex and not worth the comeback. if the customer won't pay for overboard I walk away.

Have you tried the magic mix? Bonding with multi? Works great over artex? I was a little sceptical but use it when I'm going over something that needs a deeper mix. Great work 👍

He already did it and mentioned it as well. Magic mix is the best mix for Artex. Anyway, this Artex is not bad at all and I usually hit it in 2 thick skimming coats

May as well use a normal feather edge and put a float over it and that would let the air into it and set quicker or a couple of hand fulls of cement witch would make it set a lot quicker so it could be finished much sooner than just waiting around for it to go off normal and maybe not be able to finish it same day and have to come back the next day before all these new products and we used sand and cement sometimes we had to wait three days before we could finish it because if the blocks were wet it would run down the walls if you didn’t leave it on the wall pulling in before anything else could be done and even then if you were lucky as sometimes it would be three days just to get it floated up and then two days to wait letting it go hard enough to skim because if it’s to green the skin will blow and just not take proper so it’s so important to know what you are doing in these cases but it’s being lost all the knowledge as it’s so different lately and I feel sorry for new youngsters just starting to learn the trade as plastering is a really lot to learn if you want to be a proper tradesmen and six years to learn maybe more as you don’t do everything and a finish might not be done for ages and pop up out of the blue and then it’s your time to learn it I’ve been plastering over 45 years and still I lean new things and always will so you need a open mind and relise no one knows everything 👍👍

You have to let the first coat of plaster go off a bit longer on the Bonding. And only skim it when the PVA has gone tacky…never when it’s wet. That should do it 👍

I may be teaching you to suck eggs, I don't know, but I've not heard you talk of 'Carlite Finish' at all. It used to be the Go-To for Carlite Browning then Hardwall, but many builders merchants stopped stocking it when Multi-Finish came out ..... However! If your S&C Render, Bonding, Hardwall render ever gets far too dry, it's THE finish to use 'without' the need for Glueing Up all the time :-( .... I doubt it's called Carlite Finish anymore, it used to have a Pinky-Purple end to the bag up to a few years ago ... Might be well worth checking out - I reckon you'd LOVE the time it saves, and how easy it spreads .... No good on FRESH render though ......
