At times, I feel like GB cuts too many corners such in the case where they hide J boxes in walls and ceilings. If that connection takes a lighting strike, the plastic likely would melt loosening the clamp possibly making it fall off. Pipe clamps in the US are build quite robust. The wire isn't directly clamped to the pipe. Rather, the clamp clamps to the pipe, and a wire connector is built right into the clamp for a wire. It's very secure. They work great for grounding outdoor antenna masts, too. They'll bite right into that thing. I definitely wouldn't want a plastic clamp on an antenna mast.

As a plumber I can confirm this: We solder copper pipes together all day, that’s copper to copper. Feel free to just light up the blowtorch on any part of that pipe that doesn’t have a fitting with a silver ring near what you’re flaming. The pipe glows red where you flame it. Then use a 30 cent COPPER(copper clamp) pipe clamp as the connector between the wire and the pipe. You can easily stick an eyelet on the wire and a bolt and nut into the Screw Hole on the clamp. Then, solder the clamp on to the side of the pipe. You can use 2 clamps if you feel it is important to Go with a larger Passthrough. Or better yet: If this was me I’d cut into the pipe, being prepared to stick a coupling over what I just cut. Now that I’ve got the pipes apart I can slide a large heat shrink and a Heat shrink that sleeves into the prior, over the pipe I solder the coupling to the cut pipes I have in front of me so that it’s All Back to before Cut that Wire 8 inches back and wrap it around the pipe a few times, Solder it if I’m feeling frisky (use flux) Boom ready for some heat shrinks to slide over it Go ahead and Flame up the heat shrinks. I’m a pro so I have an 18v Heat Gun. Now, You really have contact. Doubt you’d even Need to heat shrink it, cut it. Solder it. Blah blah. Wrapping a wire around something a few times is not a new concept. It’s how a lot of fences Are wired. Sturdy, reliable, and Basically also ground wires. No Hot! So a wrapped wire by itself is 10x more effective than this plastic half an inch of contact making BS that is Just something for you to buy and relentlessly have trouble with getting perfect, maybe. Kind of funny to think that Anybody would notice either. I bet you just wrap your ground wire a few times you Will not be at any less risk of house fire (in the event your pipes become live or your ground = the scenario) compared to if you had a couple heat shrinks, this clamp, Or one of the Metal Connectors I see here in Texas left and right. Last thing though, Those magnets on your water lines are never dirty. Pretty sure that means they do nothing! Figure out your daily microplastic intake before you start worrying about the (nonexistent) iron you might drink if you really want to scare yourself. Second Note: Cut the Wire About 2-3 inches Back up where the top of the coil is. So that the wire is wrapped around the pipe a few times and hangs off a couple inches on one end, now disconnected from the rest of the wire. You can Stick a Male and female terminal on the wires. You can now Unplug the wire in the event your ground becomes live or your pipe. and the next guy can literally just Get it out of the way as soon as he needs it done without doing any work at all. Bet this segment of pipe lasts 60 years. Type L copper is Standard. Feel free to pour Solder all over it. Good stuff

Maybe you guys should get your act together and get rid of bonding to piping systems which just contribute to the diverted neutral current issue. Learn how to put in a ground rod electrode!!!
@robertgaines-tulsa
@robertgaines-tulsa 11 месяцев назад
NEC requires you to bond metal water and gas pipes to the grounding system. It's just to keep everything at the same voltage and for lightning. We of course still use a ground rod electrode.
@professorg8383
@professorg8383 11 месяцев назад
@@robertgaines-tulsa Yes I am aware of the NEC requirements and you indeed hit on the main reason to take any grounded components to the same potential. But there is a difference between grounding and bonding which most don't fully comprehend. Using a multi-meter would lad you to believe they are the same, but the purpose and application are different. I brought this up because this channel is from a UK company supplying the UK electrical market. And as it turns out the electrical systems in the UK are much different. They do not require the need for a separate grounding electrode for what we refer to as the equipment ground. They have a situation they call diverted neutral currents. In the US with the slit phased 240/120 volt system, often the neutral conductor going back to the transformer, pulls no current or only the difference between the two line conductors. But in the UK the Neutral needs to conduct every bit of the current being supplied by the line conductor. They bond the incoming neutral to ground through underground piping systems. The problem with this is that this ground can become a conductor and because piping systems are shared across neighboring houses, your neutral return current may actually pass through neighbors; electrical services. This can be your total current usage going through a neighbor's grounding system. In that house, you may shut off the main but break 10's of amps when you open the grounding conductor. So the ground is unknowingly a real current carrying conductor. If your neutral conductor to the transformer becomes broken, you will not know it because it returns through all the parallel neighboring grounding systems. I brought this up because this same channel recently did a video on it and they are trying to pass a law through Parliament to change the regulations. Imagine just how screwed up we would be if Congress were in charge of the NEC code!! But these guys and others post videos like this as if all electrical systems were the same. These clamps may indeed be approved by the BS code, which is the UK version of the IEC code. But I'd bet these are not listed and approved by UL and the NEC, But I'd bet you can buy them!! There is a bunch of stuff approved by the NEC that does not have UL/NEC approvals, but you can buy them. Then IEC is a joke and they are very low standards if you dare call them standards. Few people know that the very large majority of IEC certifications are self-certified by the manufacturer without any third party testing at all. Probably not even tested by the manufacturer. To self certify, you just attest to the fact that it meets their horribly low official standards. Imagine Chinese companies doing this! They are full NEC members. I suspect from what I have seen, the company that runs this channel is probably pretty reliable and honest. But they aren't honest enough to issue a brief disclaimer that what their videos show, is only applicable to the UK electrical market. I'm an electrical engineer in the US who has some exposure to other systems. We spend way more money than dozens of these other countries combined so they are mostly worried about selling their products, whether you can legally use them or not and much the same applies to their practices who answer to other standards.

shotty connection M8 if you're going to earth a pipe do it Right! metal bonding clamps are used for a reason, more surface area contacting the pipe resulting in a better ground/earth connection than just the wire contacting oneside, proper title would be why electricians need to watch this video so they don't make this stupid ass decision!

to attach the grounding cable in this way , it is beyond " REASONABLE " . Humidity and ordinary air oxidize copper and its alloys . What kind of contact can we talk about , AND THE LACK OF GROUNDING CAN KILL A PERSON . The most reliable way is soldering two elements or welding two metals

When I was an apprentice, I used to hear the older sparks saying how they are ‘unskilling the trade’. Cos they could do fire alarm, security, data, panels; and when I got to my 2330 a lot of what they talked of had been taken out. Then people were only using pre-fabbed bends and sets for tray and trunking (some jobs even conduit): I don’t doubt they are much quicker and in some cases tidier, but there are times you need to be able to make a tidy bend by hand: this seems to be falling to the wayside. Clamps like this just literally take ANY skill out of doing a basic connection job. If you’re not able to do an Earth clamp on a pipe properly, I have some bad news: it ain’t the clamp at fault.

To allay the legitimate concerns many have over this item, did UL Labs "list it," after they extensively tested it? What does the American electric codes say about using such items? Still, the item looks handy, though I'm not an electrician.
@justkelly6992
@justkelly6992 9 месяцев назад
No way in all that is electrically safe would I do that. Plastic degrades quickly over time and would crack and fall off. I will continue to pay ten bucks and use solid metal clamps that meet UL ratings which have worked for over a century. How this ever got approved stymies the imagination. Code ain't what it used to be.
