Plastic PVC, Wood and Bamboo Shakuhachi Flute Demonstration

The video demonstrates what fully functional and well made shakuhachi flutes should do with a standard, neutral embouchure. It is shaped like a gentle smile for most experienced players.

Thanks for this video. I made my self a very crude PVC shakuhachi last night in 10 minutes and was amazed at how pleasing it was to play - even just getting the few notes I could manage. That calm half smile doesn't have to be forced! I'm off to the plumb shop at lunchtime to get some stuff for working on version two.

I put your pvc shakuhachi in my Amazon wish list (I'm broke) but for now, I can whistle pretty good to make it sound like a shakuhachi, lol.

I was amazed by both instruments (shinobue and shakuhachi) but with this comment I'm convinced it was a good decision with wooden shakuhachi (hajimete,and I saw your page after this purchase),but now I'm ordering (I'm not sure about shipping cost) your booklet and CD, and I'm sure that soon I'll be able to buy one of your profesional models.

I had a couple of experiences where I had to adjust the embouchure for each hole. Now I know it's not me, but the quality of the flute. Thank you! Where can I buy some of the flutes that you make?

It sounded like Shika No Tone in the middle there when you played slowly with the wooden one. Beautiful work.
@robc2742
@robc2742 3 года назад
I noticed the PVC is around 1 note higher on the first played note @1:07 than the first played note with the Japanese bamboo @4:58 is this due to slight differences in the design, meaning you could design another PVC flute to somehow pull down the tone just a bit to match the Japanese one? Or is it just due to the material and it can't be matched?
@yungflutes

Yes, This is common with all wind instruments. You need a swab.

You played another scale from top in the 3th register at 2:14. Its a C minor or something like that. I tryed the same in my shaku but It sounds a bit out of tune. Does It means that my Flute is not so well made? Thanks very much
@yungflutes

Could be the flute or the operator. It takes a lot of skill to play in tune especially at the top of the second octave,

Hi Perry, these are nice videos! For someone who is new to music in general, do you recommend I begin with pvc first? What sort of things should I be researching as well? Thanks
@17joren

Additionally, should I know particular brands or is it better to make one myself? I'm also interested in a middle-eastern flute called a ney that seems to be made often by their own players.

Hi Perry, what is your honest professional opinion on the Shakuhachi Yuu? Thanks.
@perryyung1733
@perryyung1733 7 лет назад
A good flute for back-up in case of emergency for players who already know how to play. If I were to have started with the a Yuu, I probably would not have gone far because the flute does not inspire me to pick it up. Beginners struggle with acquiring the skill to make a sound and that takes time. Time Is important. For me, a simple well tuned bamboo flute is much more inspiring,
@EpiCai

thank you for the reply :)
@EpiCai

But as sound goes, If played by a skillful shakuhachi player, would the Shakuhachi Yuu be able to produce the same/relatively identical soulful sound as a $2000 and up profesionally made bamboo Shakuhachi? thank you.

Where can I buy the last flute you played. The 2.0 one. BTW I love your demo. I was cheating playing a transverse Shakuhacki for years and finally broke down getting a few low end bamboo ones on ebay that are pitched well. I'm gonna get a pvc one too. Thx in advance.

One good thing about a PVC flute is you can drop it, or climb into a watertank with it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--ir2RVSLZfc.html

What are the differences between PVS and Bamboo? Other than the tone obviously. Are all techniques applicable to PVC?
@perryyung1733
@perryyung1733 8 лет назад
+Xeno Hi , thanks for listening. My comments only pertain to MY flutes as every handmade flute is different due to the maker's skill. My PVC flutes are the best you can buy for the money in terms of cost vs quality. They can play all the fingerings required of shakuhachi music and plays in tune for those who can play in tune. Bamboo flutes are mellower and more costly.

It would be cool if you could make a shakuhachi out of graphene, >>Columbia University mechanical engineering professor James Hone once said it is “so strong it would take an elephant, balanced on a pencil, to break through a sheet of graphene the thickness of Saran Wrap,” according to the university.

The Shhakuhach at 3:55, I looked closely and do not see a root end, If there is no root end, is it still a Shakuhachi with out the root, or is that adifferent name of the same type of flute? I make Shakuhachi flutes from time to time from bamboo, but I have trouble getting the root end so I just leacve the flutes with out the root ends?

ah i wish i had seen this before i bought a different PVC flute made in Thailand. the holes on mine are crooked compared to the holes on yours, and there appears to be an extra one on the top side. do you know how your supposed to hold it when the holes are like this?
@osflutes5141

The extra hole may be a tuning hole, one not to be played at all. But I'm just guessing cos I haven't seen your flute.
